Bold PointsBio
My name is Mia Taglia and I am a 20-year-old student at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. I have a passion for helping people and I am planning to become an occupational therapist, in order to pursue this passion! I enjoy spending my time volunteering, playing with my dogs, and being with my family! Over the last three years, I have dedicated my free time to participating in over 250 volunteer hours, which have offered me the most rewarding experiences. I am eager to continue my service journey, through volunteering, and through my future career.
Currently, I am working as a waitress and as a social media manager for Rapids on Wheels. At Rapids on Wheels, I help to market a mobile medical-testing company to individuals who may not be able to access a medical office as easily as others. Although I work two jobs, to make ends meet, I find myself submerged in the idea of working to spread kindness, compassion, empathy, and equity.
Although I do work hard outside of school, I am extremely dedicated to my academic work. At 18 years old, I graduated from a dual-enrollment program with my high school diploma and an associate degree in liberal arts, maintaining a 3.9 and 4.0 grade point average, respectively. From there, I went on to pursue a bachelor of science in psychology, graduating in the spring of 2023, with a 3.7 grade point average. I am currently pursuing an 11-month master of business administration, before my doctorate, in an effort to be able to one day open my own occupational therapy practice.

Bold Listening Scholarship
Listening, to me, is an act of kindness, of compassion, of love, and of respect. When we listen to others, we instill in them a sense of agency and allow them to know that they are not only heard, but also seen, loved, and valued. Growing up, my father did not have a childhood where he was surrounded by adults who listened to him. Without an example of a listener, it was never easy for him to actively listen to my make-believe stories and long explanations, as I was a child with a strong imagination. To make up for this, my mother took the time to make each story a conversation; she asked questions and explored the figments of my imagination far beyond the parameters of what I could ever make up. Her interest in my words allowed me to know that I was cared for and made me feel confident, important, and loved.
My mother’s care inspired me to offer the same feelings to others and to help everyone around me to know that their words mattered. To actively listen to people, I make sure that they are the center of attention, whether they are talking to me alone, or in a group setting. I find it vital to ask questions that help further their ideas and to show them that I want to hear more. I often find myself, in conversation, nodding my head along with their words and fixating my attention on them. I hold eye contact and ensure that my body language remains open and accepting, no matter the length of the story or conversation, at hand. These mechanisms, in my opinion, display active listening and create strong senses of agency, value, and love in those around me, just as I had always admired.
