My experience with mental health has deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. When I started ninth grade, I began fading in and out of reality, feeling like I was living on autopilot. It was as though I was going through the motions, but never fully engaging with my life. This disconnection lasted for a long time, and at times, I felt overwhelmed by the inability to escape the fog that clouded my mind. Even though I still face these challenges sometimes, I’ve come to understand that mental health isn’t a battle that should be fought alone.
One of the key turning points in my journey was when I surrendered my life to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There were times when the weight of it all felt unbearable, and I realized that some burdens are too heavy to carry alone. Faith became a cornerstone of my healing process, helping me navigate through moments of uncertainty and find strength when I felt like I had none left. It didn’t make my struggles disappear, but it gave me a renewed sense of purpose and helped me approach life more intentionally. Instead of dwelling on how far I had to go, I learned to appreciate the present and focus on the steps I was taking right now.
My experience with mental health has also shaped how I relate to others. It’s given me the ability to empathize with people who are struggling, even when they may not openly share their pain. I’ve learned the importance of listening without judgment, offering support instead of advice, and simply being there for others when they need it most. This has strengthened my relationships with family and friends, as I’ve been able to share my struggles and lean on them for support, just as they’ve supported me in return.
These experiences have also played a key role in shaping my career aspirations. As a future pediatrician, I want to go beyond treating physical health and integrate mental health care into my practice. I know the importance of early intervention, and I want to be the kind of doctor who listens to my patients—addressing not just their symptoms but their emotional and mental well-being as well. The stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in communities of color, has motivated me to become a provider who breaks those barriers, offering care that embraces both the mind and body.
Ultimately, my journey with mental health has taught me the importance of being seen, heard, and supported, especially during difficult times. It has deepened my commitment to becoming a compassionate and empathetic provider, one who not only offers medical treatment but also helps heal from the inside out. My own experience has shown me the power of healing—both in myself and in others—and I am determined to be that source of support for my future patients.
Jim Coots Scholarship
This scholarship funding will have a profound impact on my journey towards becoming a pediatrician and advocate for holistic health. As a first-generation college student, financial assistance plays a pivotal role in allowing me to focus on my studies, community work, and long-term goals without the burden of overwhelming financial stress. It will allow me to pursue a rigorous pre-medical track, access essential resources, and gain the hands-on experiences needed to succeed in medical school. With fewer financial worries, I’ll be able to fully invest in my education and extracurricular activities that are crucial for my personal and professional development.
Beyond just the academic support, this scholarship will enable me to build the foundation for my broader mission in the realm of holistic health. I’m passionate about integrating mental health care into pediatric care, recognizing that both physical and emotional well-being are deeply interconnected. By receiving this scholarship, I am one step closer to turning this vision into a reality—creating a practice where children and families have access to the care they truly deserve, where their mental, physical, and emotional health are all treated with equal importance.
The impact I hope to make in the field of holistic health extends beyond the confines of a single patient’s experience. I aim to be a catalyst for change, pushing for more inclusive practices that address not only physical symptoms but also the emotional and social factors that influence overall well-being. My goal is to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, especially in underrepresented communities, and advocate for preventive care, early intervention, and continuous support for families. I want to ensure that all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to a well-rounded healthcare experience that nurtures both body and mind.
By merging my passion for medicine with my entrepreneurial spirit, I envision a healthcare space where accessibility, inclusivity, and empathy are at the forefront. I am determined to become a provider who listens to her patients, understands their unique needs, and offers tailored care that not only addresses immediate health concerns but also promotes long-term well-being. This scholarship will help me get closer to that goal by easing the financial burden of my education, enabling me to pursue both my medical degree and my aspirations to create spaces of healing that prioritize the whole person.
In the long run, I hope my work will be a model for others in the medical field—particularly for young women of color who may not always see themselves represented in healthcare. This scholarship will be more than just financial support; it will be an investment in my ability to make a lasting, positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.
Tamurai's Adventure Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of making a difference in people’s lives. The medical field, with its capacity to heal, provide care, and transform lives, felt like the perfect place for me to combine my desire to help others with my curiosity and dedication to learning. As an 18-year-old aspiring pediatrician, I am motivated by a clear belief: we need more Black doctors in medicine, because the lack of representation leads to unnecessary hardships, particularly for people of color. I’ve witnessed firsthand how marginalized groups—especially women of color—are often dismissed, overlooked, or even silenced in medical settings. Without anyone to advocate for them, they continue to suffer—sometimes even dying from conditions that could have been treated or prevented if someone had just taken the time to listen. This harsh reality is one of the main reasons I am determined to become a pediatrician. I want to be the person who listens to my patients, who fights for them, and ensures that their voices are heard. No longer will they be dismissed, made to feel crazy, or unheard.
Growing up, I was acutely aware of the healthcare disparities that exist, especially for marginalized communities. These disparities are one of the main reasons I am dedicated to pursuing a career in medicine—so that I can be part of the solution. My goal is to not only provide medical care but to offer a holistic approach to child healthcare, integrating mental health support into pediatric care. I believe that mental and physical health go hand in hand, and children deserve a care environment where both aspects are treated with equal importance. By doing so, I hope to ensure that children and families—especially those from underrepresented communities—have access to comprehensive, empathetic care that addresses the whole person. Too often, children from these communities are not given the same opportunities for holistic healthcare, leading to long-term struggles. I want to change that.
At the same time, I recognize the importance of combining my passion for medicine with a creative entrepreneurial mindset. My ambition extends beyond simply becoming a physician; I envision establishing a pediatric practice that is both compassionate and innovative, breaking down the barriers that exist in healthcare. My aim is to create a space where patients of all backgrounds feel seen, understood, and cared for. Whether through community outreach programs, offering educational workshops for parents, or developing more accessible healthcare solutions, I will use my skills to make healthcare equitable for all, regardless of their background.
Beyond my professional goals, I have always believed in the power of representation. I want to be a role model not just as a Black woman in the medical field, but as a leader who is unafraid to challenge the status quo and advocate for change. I believe that by breaking barriers in my own career, I can inspire others to pursue their dreams and understand that they too belong in spaces where they have been historically underrepresented.
Ultimately, I believe that the future of medicine lies in compassionate care that recognizes the full person—their medical history, mental health, and unique cultural experiences. My goal is to ensure that no patient is ever overlooked or made to feel less than. By pursuing my career in medicine, I aim to make a lasting impact, not just by providing care, but by helping to reshape a healthcare system that serves everyone equally. I am committed to making a difference by advocating for my patients, creating a more inclusive environment, and ultimately changing the way we approach healthcare for marginalized communities.
Adam Montes Pride Scholarship
I was taught to always keep my head up and push through life’s challenges, but the most significant obstacle I’ve faced wasn’t just academic or professional—it was learning to embrace my true self in a world that expected me to hide it. Growing up in a traditional Caribbean household, I quickly learned that my identity didn’t fit the narrative set by my family. For years, I kept parts of myself hidden, uncertain how they would be received. But as I matured, I realized that embracing who I truly was would allow me to make a bigger impact in the world—both personally and professionally.
Now, as an 18-year-old first-generation college student, my journey is about breaking barriers in multiple aspects of my life. I am a young Black woman, a future medical professional, and a creative entrepreneur. Each of these facets has taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of authenticity—no matter how difficult it may be.
My parents, who didn’t have the opportunity to attend college, emphasized the value of education as a way to build a better life. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for my ambitions, pushing me to excel in school and pursue my dreams in both medicine and business. The values they instilled in me have become my driving force: hard work, perseverance, and the belief that education can create a life where I can thrive authentically.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been finding ways to merge my passions for medicine and entrepreneurship. I aspire to become a pediatrician who integrates mental health care into child medicine, creating a practice where children and families feel seen, heard, and supported. Representation in medicine is critical, and I want to be a role model for those from marginalized communities, showing them that they can achieve their dreams no matter the obstacles.
Alongside my medical aspirations, my entrepreneurial spirit has allowed me to give back to my community in other meaningful ways. I run a growing hair business that empowers my clients to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. I’m also working toward launching a fashion brand that celebrates individuality and timeless style. For me, these businesses are more than just work—they are opportunities to create inclusive spaces where people are celebrated for who they truly are.
What sets me apart is my ability to balance multiple roles—each grounded in my values of resilience, empathy, and authenticity. Whether excelling in my pre-med coursework, growing my business, or dreaming of new ways to make an impact, I approach every challenge with determination, staying true to my identity and purpose.
I believe I should be a recipient of this scholarship because, like Adam Montes, I am committed to creating inclusive spaces where people can thrive and be themselves. This scholarship would enable me to continue breaking barriers, pursuing my aspirations, and making a lasting impact on my community and beyond.
Ultimately, my journey isn’t just about achieving personal success—it’s about creating a world where everyone can embrace their true selves, where identity is celebrated, and where resilience leads to lasting change.
Sarah Eber Child Life Scholarship
Adversity has a way of reshaping us, revealing the strength we didn’t know we had. For me, this moment came during my first year of college, when I found myself at a crossroads, juggling academic demands, a growing entrepreneurial dream, and the pressure to live up to my own expectations.
The transition to college was more challenging than I had imagined. As a pre-med student with aspirations to become a pediatrician, I knew the road ahead would be rigorous. At the same time, I was trying to grow my hair business, revamp my brand, and navigate the unfamiliar terrain of adulthood. Every day felt like a balancing act, with each task competing for my time and energy.
It wasn’t long before I reached my breaking point. It was during a particularly tough week filled with looming deadlines, business commitments, and personal responsibilities. I felt paralyzed by the sheer weight of it all, questioning whether I was chasing too much or setting myself up for failure. I had always prided myself on my ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, but for the first time, I doubted if I could handle everything.
Instead of succumbing to the pressure, I decided to take control. My plan of action was simple but transformative: prioritize, restructure, and persevere. I started by listing out everything I wanted to achieve and then organizing my goals into categories. I realized I didn’t have to accomplish everything all at once. Breaking my tasks into smaller, manageable steps made them less overwhelming and more attainable.
For my studies, I created a detailed schedule that allowed me to dedicate specific times to my coursework, ensuring I stayed on track. For my business, I focused on small but meaningful goals, like posting regularly on social media or reaching out to potential clients. I also learned to lean on my support system, something I had always been hesitant to do. Talking to friends and mentors reminded me that I didn’t have to face these challenges alone.
As I began to regain control, I noticed a shift in how I viewed adversity. I realized that challenges weren’t barriers—they were opportunities for growth. Struggles didn’t mean I was failing; they meant I was evolving. This mindset not only allowed me to navigate that difficult period but also reshaped my outlook on life.
Today, I carry those lessons with me. They fuel my passion for medicine and my vision of creating a welcoming pediatric practice where mental health and compassion are prioritized. They inspire my entrepreneurial pursuits, from my growing hair business to my dream of starting a fashion brand that connects with people on a deeper level.
Adversity didn’t just test me—it helped me discover my resilience and resourcefulness. It taught me that success isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence and progress. Most importantly, it showed me that every challenge is an opportunity to become stronger, smarter, and more determined than before.
