Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
Observing domestic instability as a child, I witnessed firsthand the structural barriers of power, reinforced by cultural norms of machismo which conditioned women to internalize social expectations that have historically constrained womenโs professional autonomy. This early awareness of systemic inequality wasn't just a childhood observation; it became the lens through which I viewed my academic career. As one of the few first-generation Mexican American women in a male-dominated major, I refused to accept the dismissal of my perspectives and instead founded the Women in Business Organization on campus. Under my leadership, it became the fastest-growing organization on campus, earning Student Senate recognition after reaching 100+ members in 26 days of establishment. However, our success is measured by more than membership totals; it reflects a fundamental shift in campus culture. By creating a dedicated space where women navigate professional environments with confidence, I discovered my authentic purpose: advocacy through action.
I am in the pursuit of a career in law to honor those who were taught never to take up space. I carry the weight of my grandmother, a woman whose intellectual potential was diminished by an era that systemically discouraged women from seeking higher education and confined their aspirations to domestic expectations. My goal is to move beyond general support and toward the action of generational change. For women who have been conditioned to believe they do not belong in rooms of power, I intend to acquire the legal expertise necessary to ensure their voices are not only heard but are protected by law.
As a prospective 2027 JD candidate with Georgetown Law as a top choice, my commitment to this field is also long-term and academically grounded. I earned my Associate of Arts degree concurrently with my high school diploma, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and entering Coe College with junior standing. My transition as an out-of-state student from Colorado to Iowa represented a significant shift, yet I maintained my 4.0 GPA, earning a spot on the Deanโs List. My dedication to the law, however, is not for the sake of a title, but for the mastery of the craft. As the Founder and Lead Facilitator of the Business Law I Review Forum, I recently leveraged my platform with Women in Business to invite the entire student body to an intensive review session. While only four peers attended that initial two-hour meeting on February 16th, I found a deep sense of purpose in the exchange. I have honored that investment by pioneering high-level initiatives, such as a secured trip to take the Women in Business executive board and the broader student body to Madison, Wisconsin, to hear the former VP of the United States speak.
Ultimately, this scholarship is an investment in reclaiming agency. As an out-of-state student, the financial burden of my Fall 2026 tuition presents a significant barrier to the focus required for my final undergraduate year. By alleviating this strain, the scholarship will allow me to dedicate my full energy to my studies and my upcoming August LSAT. My goal is to secure a seat at a T14 law school, where I will represent women of color in a male-dominated field. This support ensures that financial uncertainty does not compromise my academic excellence or my mission to bring sophisticated advocacy to the highest levels of the legal profession. For me, ambition and the rigorous pursuit of higher education constitute a form of resistance to the narrative that women of color do not belong in the rooms of power.
