Bio

I am a first-generation latine individual driven by the need to address systemic disparities in healthcare and public policy. As an Advertising & Public Relations major, I use my skills in communication, graphic design, and marketing to create solutions that serve underserved communities. I’m deeply committed to using these skills not only to grow professionally but to make a meaningful difference. Currently considering certifications in First Aid and EMT, I believe practical healthcare knowledge is crucial for creating real change. As I pursue both pre-public health and pre-law tracks, I aim to combine my passion for healthcare and law to tackle disparities through policy and legal advocacy. My goal is to establish Tabla Rasa, a nonprofit focused on providing outreach programs that address healthcare barriers and ensure equitable access to care for low-income and minority populations. However I recognize, the road to achieving my goals has come with financial challenges, as attending both law school and med school is expensive. I understand that these obstacles are part of the process, and I'll continue to find ways to move forward, adapt, and stay determined in the face of adversity. My focus remains on creating a lasting impact in public policy, law, and healthcare—ensuring that future generations have the resources and opportunities they deserve.

While Omaha’s bustling streets shaped my sense of identity, it was a summer spent in the echoes of nearing train’s and the smell of Fairbury bacon that truly opened my eyes to the unknown stories of rural women navigating the limiting healthcare and mental health resources. As someone who grew up in Omaha, I've always understood the importance of community, yet my upbringing was shaped when working in rural areas, molding my understanding of the unique challenges women face in accessing healthcare and mental health support. One of the most transformative experiences in my journey was spending a summer in Fairbury, Nebraska, as part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Rural Journalism Internship Program. During this time, I worked for the local newspaper, contributing graphic design and content for Celebracion, a Spanish-language publication distributed for free. Yet throughout, I learned of the dark secrets of the community. Collaborating with Jefferson Community Health & Life Fairbury Clinic, using my fluency in Spanish to create materials that addressed the language barriers in local pharmacies and businesses, I learned of the drastic need for these services. Living in housing provided by the Fairbury Housing Authority—designed to support women and families in transition—gave me a deeper perspective on the resilience of rural communities and the systemic gaps that need to be addressed. Did you know that in Jefferson County, the usage of methamphetamine and heroin has increased drastically, leading to many overdoses and affecting the quality of life of the children? This experience solidified the imperative need to bridge barriers, whether they are linguistic, cultural, or systemic. My current path as an Advertising and Public Relations major with pre-health and pre-law tracks allows me to merge my skills in communication, healthcare, and advocacy. As a pharmacy technician with mental health training, I have seen firsthand the impact of accessible resources on individuals’ lives. My ultimate goal is to pursue a dual enrollment program: a Master’s degree in Public Health at UNMC and a Juris Doctors at UNL. That end goal is to establish or work in a nonprofit organization and dedicate my career to creating programs that empower women in underserved communities through low-to-no-cost medical and law clinic advice and education trainings. I envision a future where healthcare and mental health resources are accessible to every woman, regardless of her location or background. Whether it’s through mobile clinics, educational campaigns, or collaborative initiatives, I intend to create sustainable solutions that address the root causes of inequities and ease the lives of those burdened by addiction through reformative programs not only for women but for the children affected by the addiction of parents. The Deena Collins Memorial Scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also cover financial costs with the ambitious dream I have. With my education, I will continue to build the skills and networks needed to ease challenges into opportunities for rural women in Nebraska and beyond, transforming Nebraska into a state worthy of recognition that precedes the Cornhuskers and our great beef. A recognition of the assurance of women’s health and vibrant opportunities, not just for women's futures but for our future generations too. Thank you for considering my application. With most respect, Jacqueline Gomez

Picture this: you're trapped in a world where the monsters don't hide under the bed, they live inside you. A universe where shadows don't just linger in corners but cast over every moment of your life. A place where anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are not just abstract concepts, but constant companions, relentless, ruthless, and remorseless. And these three henchmen serve a queen - Borderline Personality Disorder. Welcome to my reality. In the depths of despair, I found myself sitting against the cold, dusty floor, questioning my purpose. BPD has been the biggest part of my journey. Relentlessly casting a dark shadow, crippling anxiety, and panic attacks became my constant companions. Mood swings sent me spiraling into emotional turmoil, making it difficult to maintain my sanity. Trust issues consumed me, creating a wall that kept others at arm's length. The simplest act of hugging someone became a daunting task, triggering a flood of my PTSD. I felt trapped within the confines of my own mind. Growing up in a traditional, conservative Latino household presented its own set of challenges. Success was not only expected but demanded, a symbol of triumph over adversity. The pursuit of excellence clashed with my own journey of healing and self-discovery. Balancing cultural expectations and my own need for self-expression became a delicate dance, one that tested my resilience and forced me to confront societal stigmas surrounding mental health. felt isolated, as if I were fighting an invisible battle on my own. The absence of a supportive environment left me vulnerable, amplifying the intensity of my struggles and pushing me to the brink of despair. There were moments when the burden of it all became too much to bear. Suicidal ideation crept into my thoughts, whispering the illusion of escape. The darkness threatened to consume me, but amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope flickered. "Dum Spiro Spero" - While I breathe, I hope. These words echoed in my mind, a reminder that even in the depths of despair, there is always a spark of possibility. Seeking help became an act of defiance, a decision to prioritize my own well-being over societal expectations and cultural norms. I sought solace outside the confines of my home, reaching out to mental health professionals who could provide the support and guidance I craved. Therapy became a sanctuary where I could unravel the tangled web of emotions and traumas that had shaped my life. Through the guidance of skilled professionals, I learned coping mechanisms to navigate the turbulent waters of my mind. I discovered the power of self-care, mindfulness, and self-compassion. Slowly but surely, I began to reclaim my sense of self and forge a path toward healing. Through self-help books, the arts, and volunteering, I further cultivated a sense of resilience and kindness for myself. The written word became my sanctuary, allowing me to explore the depths of my emotions and share my experiences with others. I sought to break the silence surrounding mental health, advocating for greater understanding, empathy, and support. While the road ahead may be filled with challenges, I am fueled by the belief that our struggles do not define us; they mold us into resilient warriors with a profound sense of purpose. With each breath, I carry this flame of hope, knowing that my journey is not just about overcoming personal obstacles but also about creating a world where mental health is embraced and supported. I aspire to be a voice for justice, compassion, and inclusivity, making a difference in the lives of those who walk a similar path.
DV Awareness Scholarship in Memory of Teresa Cox, Rhonda Cox and Jimmie Neal
In the depths of my soul, a fire burns bright, fueled by the ashes of my past. I am a survivor, a warrior who has walked through the darkest valleys of domestic violence. My ex-partner's control and manipulative behavior cast a dark shadow over my life. He would exert his power even as I slept, dictating what I ate, how I dressed, and who I associated with. These experiences, coupled with the influence of my domestically abusive upbringing, left me burdened with guilt and confusion. Coming from a Mexican American background within a conservative religious household, societal norms often defended abusers and pedophiles. But within this darkness, I found the strength to break free and realized my purpose: to be a beacon of change and raise awareness about domestic violence. To ignite change, I will employ the power of vulnerability and storytelling as a future politician sharing my experiences. I aim to shine a light on the silent struggles endured by survivors and give voice to the voiceless. Through heartfelt documentaries and testimonies, I will expose the true face of abuse, fostering understanding among those who have not experienced it firsthand. However, awareness alone is insufficient. I am committed to taking action that will impact the lives of survivors and dismantle the systems that perpetuate domestic violence. I will collaborate with local organizations and community leaders, forging alliances that create comprehensive support systems for survivors. Together, we will advocate for accessible and secure housing, counseling services, and legal protections. By driving policy reform, conducting community outreach, and educating the public, we will lay the groundwork for healing, justice, and empowerment. Looking ahead, my aspiration is to hold leadership positions that facilitate tangible change. As a representative of my community, I will advocate for legislation that safeguards the rights of women, children, and marginalized groups. I will tirelessly fight for funding to support domestic violence prevention programs, essential support services, and educational initiatives. By embracing the power of advocacy and policy-making, I will be a catalyst for transformation, paving the way towards a society where no voice is silenced, and no one's dignity is compromised. My journey is defined by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of unity. Though the road ahead may be challenging, I am filled with hope for a brighter future—a future where domestic violence is no longer tolerated, where survivors are uplifted, and where communities stand united against the darkness we collectively hold. Every step I take is a testament to the courage of those who came before me and those who continue to fight. My ideal future is one that destigmatizes survivors and condemns abuse—a world where love, respect, and compassion reign supreme. In my pursuit of change, I am acutely aware of the power of representation. I will challenge the cultural norms and stereotypes that enable abuse by engaging in courageous conversations within my community. As a Mexican American woman, I will share my story to inspire others to confront harmful beliefs and practices. Together, we will redefine masculinity, promote healthy relationships, and foster a culture of respect and equality. My personal experiences as a survivor drive my commitment to raising awareness and effecting lasting change. Through sharing my story, advocating for policy reform, and fostering cultural shifts, I will pass informative legislation and elevate others' voices. Envisioning a society where domestic violence is eradicated, where survivors find solace and support, and where compassion triumphs over cruelty, we can build a future that honors the resilience of survivors and paves the way for a world free from domestic violence.
    McClendon Leadership Award
To me, leadership means stepping up to make a positive impact and being a voice for those who may not have one. It is about taking responsibility for my community and striving to create meaningful change. Leadership is crucial because it empowers individuals to advocate for their needs and work towards a better future. Looking ahead, I aspire to be in a leadership position in Omaha, representing and advocating for my community. I want to be a voice for marginalized groups, foster inclusivity, and work towards addressing systemic inequalities. Through leadership, I believe we can create a more equitable society where everyone's needs and perspectives are valued. Throughout my experiences and involvements, I have witnessed the transformative power of leadership. From my various roles in the community where I could support to LGBTQ+ youth nationwide, to my work as a Community Outreach State Legislative Intern at Senator Tony Vargas' District Office, I have seen the importance of connecting with people, amplifying their voices, and addressing their concerns. Having the opportunity to represent individuals who share my identity as Mexican or an LGBTQ+ person has fostered a deep sense of community and fueled my commitment to leadership. My future endeavors consist of advocating for their rights and well-being and creating a safe and inclusive space where their voices are heard and valued. Education has also played a significant role in shaping my leadership perspective. As a Political Science and Pre-Health student at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, I am equipping myself with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex issues and contribute to the betterment of society. My bilingual proficiency, customer service experience, and technological skills further enhance my ability to connect with and serve a wide range of individuals. Volunteering with organizations linked with local non-profits and health clinics since I was fifteen has allowed me to advocate for workers' rights, promote sexual health education, and engage with diverse communities. These experiences have taught me that leadership involves being proactive, building coalitions, and actively participating in initiatives that benefit others. My experiences as a Mexican American from a city that often marginalized our community have fueled my determination to become a leader who can make a difference. I have witnessed the struggles and challenges faced by my community, and I recognize the need for someone to stand up and address the injustices we endure. Through my involvement with local organizations and initiatives, I have seen the power of representation and the impact it can have on inspiring others. Leadership provides an opportunity to challenge the status quo and break down barriers. By actively engaging with my community, I strive to dismantle the biases and stereotypes perpetuating negative narratives about Mexican Americans. I aim to empower fellow community members to embrace their cultural heritage, pursue their dreams, and overcome the limitations placed upon them. In conclusion, leadership means taking responsibility, making a positive impact, and advocating for others. It is essential because it empowers individuals, amplifies voices, and drives meaningful change. With my experiences, education, and dedication to my community, I hope to contribute to Omaha's leadership landscape and be a catalyst for positive transformation. Creating a more inclusive and equitable future for all in a conservative state where many like me are confined to narrow expectations, leadership becomes the brush that paints vibrant hues of possibility onto the canvas of our collective destiny. Through resilience, determination, and a refusal to be defined by stereotypes, I embrace the role of a trailblazer, carving a path that defies convention and inspires others to dream beyond the limitations imposed upon us.

As a member of a current generation who is often targeted with commentary that often is one-sided in perspective, I can recall the many times that it was due to online communities. Terms like "woke", "snowflake", "incel", and "terf" are some of the many negative terminologies that are a result of often hateful online communities and gaming forums. Reddit, Discord, and Twitch platforms not only offer a safe space for various communities in which they thrive but also, offers true transparency in individuals' thoughts, affecting their behaviors and actions. As a first-generation, "Gen Z" young adult, I've had the pleasure of indulging in social media and online forums. To me, they have offered comfort and helped me in finding myself thankfully to online forums that are for the lgbtq+ community. But just as there is a positive outcome, it is impossible to not acknowledge the lack of empathy, common sense, and morality. Somehow, these safe spaces have made some people within our society forget how to behave in society. It's new for me to consider it a phenomenon but I can see how since I've experienced the outcomes. I recall multiple times in where gaming forums that I've partaken, as most of my generation do, where some people spew pure hatred and ignorance. I've had peers, and past friends get sucked up in these online blackholes. These spaces have made it possible to share so many different perspectives and biases. Friends and loved ones have participated in these spaces. Online social media allows many to stay anonymous but also a platform to spread philosophies and for some their deepest thoughts and biases, no matter how moral or immoral they might be. Social communities are one of our most impactful technological advancements, especially in communication with one another as political leaders, scientists, newscasts and even celebrities do. Yet we can't acknowledge the elephant in the room which is how online social platforms, like gaming forums, have allowed users to behave in a manner where they don't take into consideration the very basis of the foundation of our society. We can't deny the power these online spaces have but we must be careful to not get sucked into it. Constant dog and cat-like online arguing has caused great division but also has made it harder to mend the inner ropes of our society. The reality is we must do better but the growing snowball of forums attacking each other, communicating what they call "agendas" and the lack of empathy, and disregard for social norms that are fueling our human interactions to this day is becoming a dangerous weapon.
    Simple Studies Scholarship
I would like to study Political Science out of many other majors even though they could probably end up making me more money. Coming from a Hispanic, immigrant household, as the eldest daughter of five kids, I was and am always expected to take advantage of opportunities and outdo my parents' experiences so I could have a better life than they ever did. I feel no shame about my parent's background or what they do and I am eternally grateful for the sacrifices they did. I recognize that they aren't the only ones but one pair of the same tale; the parents who sacrifice everything for their own kids, for a better future, and for a better life. To me, that has always been an injustice but also an issue that has yet to be solved. That is one of the reasons why I want to study poli-sci, to help people by understanding the system and eventually gaining the capabilities to be taken seriously. While other children were playing games and having fun in parks, I was always observing my surroundings, the cracks in the broken down sidewalks, the beatdown streets, and other families. I understood that my life experiences differed from others even though they lived 30 streets away and also a result of my unluckiness of being born as a minority and to poverty. I live in a city that still suffers the effects of segregation, Omaha, which is still to this day is socio-economically and life-wise segregated. Through gentrification, red-lining, and other injustices that are a result of laws and regulations by individuals who often turn the blind eye to the ones suffering the results. As a woman of color who often has to switch code in a different challenging world, I am still not taken seriously and will not until I get a degree. When it comes to public policy and politics, it is often challenging to be not only heard but followed up on when you aren't a recognized expert. A degree in Political Science would not only impact the outcome of my life but hopefully impact the lives of other people, people like my parents who deserve to live a good life. Even though I have not let my current statuses stop me, my stubbornness which I recognize to be ambition and resiliency can only go so far. Although I have been outspoken and involved in my community and achieved amazing things like confronting local leaders about policy and being part of movements, I am still an individual who has limited knowledge and understanding with the potential of growth. The thing about a major like Political Science is that its education can be versatile and allow you to understand why life is the way it is and how it can be improved in many aspects. With my plans of being an outspoken force of progression, I still have yet to get there and regardless of the outcome, I will make it work.
