Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My journey with mental health has profoundly influenced my goals, relationships, and worldview. While grappling with manageable anxiety, the loss of my father to COVID triggered a significant escalation in anxiety levels, leading to overwhelming panic attacks and a diminished sense of joy. Despite facing anxiety and depression, I've refused to let them dictate my life, instead channeling them into a driving force for personal growth. My remarkable mother has been instrumental in this process, prioritizing my well-being even amid her own grief. Her unwavering support has strengthened my bond and provided clarity regarding my life's direction. From my experiences, I am now determined to serve as a beacon of hope for those battling mental health challenges, believing in the possibility of finding light through perseverance. I hope to establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals on their mental health journeys, offering them solace and guidance. From all of my struggles I have now decided that I will always look for the good in people and try to help anyone I can. I also now see the world in a new light. While everything has a layer of fear for me, it is a motivator for me to push through even though it is absolutely terrifying.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I first realized I loved math in 3rd grade, then promptly decided I hated it the next day. Despite this, my fascination with math endured, fueled by its undeniable allure: the presence of patterns and the promise of a singular solution amidst countless paths to discovery.
What captivates me most about math, is the inherent orderliness- the way it weaves in patterns across the world. No matter if it is just addition, calculus, or any where in between, math has intricate and beautiful patterns. I love how these patterns aren't just on paper but also how they can also be found in nature. And within the complexness of these patterns, there is always the certainty of an answer just waiting to be revealed with enough work.
Despite my aversion to traditional math classes, where the rigid confines of the correct material study often blocks creativity and exploration, my love of the subject still persists. For me, math transcends the confines of the classroom—it is a living, breathing entity that manifests in the world around us. I am constantly awed by the way mathematical principles govern the natural world, from the Fibonacci sequence in sunflower spirals to the geometric perfection of snowflakes. I am also in awe of how these mathematical principles often discovered from nature can then be put to use to better the lives of everyone.
In essence, my love for math lies in its ability to illuminate the world with its inherent beauty and order. It is a language of patterns and precision that transcends boundaries, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Despite the occasional frustration and setbacks, my passion for math remains unwavering, fueled by the promise of endless wonder and insight it holds.
