Simon Strong Scholarship
Adversity is a universal experience, yet it shapes each of us uniquely. For me, adversity came in the form of a language barrier that shaped my childhood and early education. As a first-generation immigrant from Cuba, I arrived in the United States at a young age, speaking only Spanish. Navigating an unfamiliar world where English dominated was both intimidating and isolating. Yet, this challenge became a pivotal force in shaping my resilience and determination.
Growing up, I became my family’s translator. At the age of eight, I was accompanying my mother to doctors’ appointments, parent-teacher conferences, and even legal meetings, translating complex concepts that were far beyond my years. While I felt a sense of pride in helping my family, it was also a heavy responsibility. I often felt the weight of being the bridge between two worlds, one in which I was still learning to fit and another where I was expected to lead.
In school, the language barrier initially made academics difficult. I struggled to keep up with lessons taught in English, feeling frustrated and embarrassed. However, I refused to let these challenges define my abilities. I spent hours after school practicing vocabulary, reading books, and watching educational programs to improve my language skills. Slowly but surely, I began to excel, finding joy in the process of learning and growth. By the time I reached high school, I was not only fluent in English but thriving academically.
This adversity taught me invaluable lessons about persistence and empathy. It made me realize the strength that lies in vulnerability and the importance of seeking support when needed. It also gave me a deep appreciation for education and communication, fueling my passion for pursuing a career in STEM, where problem-solving and collaboration are essential.
My experience has also motivated me to give back. During a medical mission trip to Costa Rica, I led an initiative to gather and distribute over 1,000 dental supplies to underserved communities. This act of service felt like a full-circle moment, using the skills I had developed through overcoming my challenges to uplift others.
To anyone facing similar circumstances, my advice is to embrace the struggle and lean into the discomfort. Growth often stems from the most challenging moments. Seek resources, whether it is a mentor, a community, or educational tools, and remember that your unique experiences are a source of strength, not a limitation. Adversity may test you, but it also equips you with the resilience to succeed and inspire others along the way.
Women in STEM and Community Service Scholarship
Growing up as a first-generation Cuban immigrant, I witnessed firsthand how limited access to healthcare can impact individuals and entire communities. One of my earliest responsibilities was translating for my mom during doctor’s visits, acting as the bridge between her and the healthcare system. While I was proud to help my family, I also saw how language and cultural barriers created disparities in care. These experiences planted the seeds of my passion for improving healthcare access, particularly for minority and immigrant families, and they have fueled my ambition to pursue a career in dentistry.
Healthcare inequality is a pressing global and local issue that I am deeply passionate about addressing. In underserved communities, systemic barriers including language differences, financial instability, and limited educational resources often prevent people from receiving the care they need. My goal is to use my education in biomedical sciences and my future training as a dentist to address these disparities. I want to create solutions that ensure that no one’s background or circumstances stand in the way of their health and well-being.
Beyond academics, my commitment to community service has reinforced my passion for making a difference. During a medical mission trip to Costa Rica, I led an initiative to collect and distribute over 1,000 dental supplies, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, toys, and coloring books. These items were distributed to patients in underserved areas who received free access to dental care. Witnessing the smiles of children receiving their first toothbrushes and the gratitude of parents who had access to dental care for the first time was a transformative experience. It reminded me of the profound impact that even small actions can have on the lives of others.
I have also worked with Give2Cuba to raise $10,000 to support a children’s center in Havana, providing educational resources and support to children in need. These experiences have shaped my vision for my future career: I hope to open a dental practice that not only provides exceptional care but also serves as a community hub for outreach and education. I plan to organize free dental clinics, offer preventive care workshops, and partner with local schools to teach children about oral hygiene.
This scholarship represents more than financial support: it is an investment in my ability to create meaningful change. With this opportunity, I can focus on developing the skills and knowledge needed to address healthcare disparities and advocate for underserved communities. By combining my STEM education with my passion for service, I aim to build a better, more equitable future where healthcare is accessible to all and compassion guides innovation.
Kayla Nicole Monk Memorial Scholarship
The first time I acted as a translator for my mom, I was only eight years old. We were at a doctor’s office, and I found myself with the challenging task of explaining her symptoms to the physician and translating his instructions back to her. I did not fully understand everything being said, but I did my best. At that moment, I realized how important it was for me to help my family navigate a world that didn’t speak their language. That experience not only shaped who I am today but also planted the seeds of my passion for pursuing a career in healthcare.
As a first-generation Cuban immigrant, I grew up balancing two languages and cultures. While being bilingual has been a gift, it also comes with challenges. I often served as the voice for my parents, helping them navigate everything from medical appointments to legal documents. These experiences taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of clear communication, qualities that have shaped my educational journey and my goal to become a dentist.
I chose to pursue a degree in biomedical sciences because it provides the foundation I need to succeed in dental school. The rigorous coursework, including anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology, has challenged me to push beyond my limits and develop a deeper understanding of the human body. These studies are more than just academic achievements, they are stepping stones toward my dream of making healthcare more accessible for underserved communities.
Beyond academics, I have been deeply committed to giving back. Through Give2Cuba, I helped raise $10,000 to support a children’s center in Havana. This initiative allowed me to contribute to a cause close to my heart and reminded me of the impact we can have when we come together to serve others. Additionally, I volunteered for a medical mission trip to Costa Rica, where I led an initiative to gather thousands of dental supplies, toys, and coloring books to give to patients. My goal is to continue this spirit of service as a dentist, breaking down barriers to care for minority and immigrant families.
This scholarship would ease the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus on achieving my dream. With your support, I hope to open a practice that not only provides quality care but also fosters trust and understanding for patients from all backgrounds. My journey as a young translator for my mom has come full circle. I want to use my voice, skills, and education to advocate for others and create meaningful change.
Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
The first time I acted as a translator, I was 8 years old, nervously interpreting for my mother at a doctor’s appointment. I did not fully understand the medical terms in Spanish, let alone in English, but I managed. That moment symbolized what it meant to be a first-generation immigrant: facing challenges with courage and determination, even when you feel unprepared.
My name is Melissa, and I was born in Cuba, where Spanish was my first language and a vital part of my identity. When my family immigrated to the United States, the language barrier was one of the first challenges I encountered. Navigating a new country where I couldn’t understand or express myself was intimidating, but it pushed me to develop resilience and a drive to succeed.
As the oldest child in my family, I took on responsibilities beyond my years. From interpreting legal documents to helping my younger siblings with their homework, I became the bridge between my family and our new world. These experiences taught me the importance of adaptability, empathy, and communication. They also sparked my interest in healthcare, where connection and trust are essential.
I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical sciences to prepare for dental school. My dream is to become a dentist and serve underserved communities, especially those facing language and cultural barriers. Being bilingual allows me to connect with Spanish-speaking patients in ways that go beyond words and generate a deep sense of trust.
Beyond academics, I have sought opportunities to give back to the community. One of my proudest achievements was raising $10,000 through Give2Cuba to support a children’s center in Havana. This project provided vital resources to children in need, and it reinforced my commitment to using my skills to make a tangible impact. Giving back to my homeland has been deeply personal and reminds me of the importance of using my education to benefit others.
While being bilingual has come with challenges, such as pursuing an education in my second language, it has also been a gift. It has broadened my perspective, allowed me to build connections with diverse communities, and strengthened my ability to empathize.
This scholarship would alleviate the financial burden of my education, enabling me to focus on achieving my goals. With your support, I hope to continue turning challenges into strengths and use my voice, in both languages, to make a lasting impact as a healthcare professional.
First-Gen Futures Scholarship
I still remember my mother’s determined expression as she packed up our lives in Cuba and prepared us for a future in the United States. She did not know the challenges ahead, but she knew the sacrifices were worth it if it meant giving me access to an education she never had. That moment has stayed with me, shaping my determination to pursue higher education and create opportunities for myself and others.
As a first-generation college student, my journey has been one of resilience, resourcefulness, and learning. I have chosen to pursue higher education because it is the key to transforming my passion for healthcare into a career that can genuinely impact people’s lives. My goal of becoming a dentist is rooted in a desire to provide compassionate care, particularly to underserved communities. Growing up, I witnessed the disparities in healthcare access, which motivated me to bridge those gaps and serve as an advocate for change.
Preparing for college as a first-generation student required me to develop discipline and initiative. I immersed myself in rigorous STEM coursework, such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, and anatomy, to build a strong academic foundation. Beyond academics, I gained real-world experience by working as a certified pharmacy technician, volunteering more than 500 hours, and shadowing healthcare professionals for over 600 hours. These experiences enhanced my knowledge and confirmed my passion for helping others.
In addition to professional preparation, I sought community and mentorship to guide me through unfamiliar territory. I joined pre-dental organizations and participated in initiatives like Colgate Bright Smiles, which deepened my understanding of dentistry’s impact. Volunteering on mission trips and with organizations such as the Cuban American Alliance for Leadership and Education taught me the importance of giving back and fueled my drive to make a difference.
Higher education is more than a personal milestone for me, it is a way to honor the sacrifices my family made and break the cycle of limitations they faced. It’s a chance to build a career that not only restores smiles but also restores hope for those in need.
This scholarship would make a significant difference in my journey. It would alleviate the financial burdens of my biomedical sciences master’s program, allowing me to focus entirely on excelling in my studies and preparing for dental school. With this support, I can continue to transform the challenges I have faced into a story of perseverance and success.
Education has always been my way forward, and with your help, I am ready to continue building a future of service, compassion, and excellence.
