Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult is a book that has made a lasting impact on me. It's a powerful novel that explores the delicate and complex topic of race relations and how the small things we do can have a profound impact on the lives of others. This book is a testament to the idea that big things can happen from small gestures and that it's the small, essential gestures that we should focus on in our lives. As someone passionate about books and reading, I was immediately drawn to Small Great Things when I first heard about it. I was fascinated by the book's premise, centered around a labor and delivery nurse named Ruth, who finds herself amid a court case when she refuses to touch a newborn baby because of the baby's skin color. The book explores the themes of race, prejudice, and power and delves into the inner thoughts and motivations of each of the characters involved in the court case. One of the things that I loved most about this book is how it explores the complexities of race and prejudice. Jodi Picoult does an incredible job of weaving together multiple perspectives and voices to create a rich and nuanced portrait of this challenging and often divisive topic. Through her characters, she shows us how racism and prejudice can manifest in different ways and how even the most minor actions can have a profound impact on someone's life. For me, the most powerful message of the book is the idea that small things can have lasting consequences. This is something that I've come to believe in more and more as I've gotten older. I've come to realize that it's the small things that we do, the small gestures we make, that can have the most significant impact on other people's lives. Whether it's a kind word, a smile, or a simple act of kindness, these small things can go a long way in making someone's day and making a real difference in the world. The book has also given me a greater appreciation for the small things in my own life. I've come to realize that it's the small things that make life worth living and that it's these small gestures of love and kindness that have the power to bring people together and make a real difference in the world. I've come to appreciate the importance of taking the time to listen to others, to show them love and kindness, and to do what I can to make a positive impact in their lives. Finally, I must mention the tattoo that I have on my wrist. I got it as a tribute to this fantastic book and as a reminder of the powerful message that it contains. The tattoo is a simple but meaningful symbol of the great small things that we can all do in our lives to make a difference. It's a reminder always to be kind and compassionate, always to be mindful of the small things that I do and say, and always to strive to make a positive impact on the world.

I never thought I would write an essay about my journey in college. It wasn't an easy path, and I'm grateful to have come this far. I never expected to stop my education and start working at a young age, but that's what happened. It's been a rollercoaster ride, but I've learned much. I started college with high hopes but soon realized I was unsure why I was there. I wasn't sure what I wanted to study or what career path I wanted to take. I felt lost, and it showed in my grades. I wasn't doing well in my classes, and I lacked the motivation to continue. I eventually made the tough decision to take a break from college. During my hiatus, I focused on work and building a career. I was determined to make a difference in the world, and I found a passion for marketing. I took on small freelance projects and eventually landed a full-time job. I worked hard, learned as much as I could, and soon became a valuable member of the team. I was determined to succeed, and it showed. I was eventually allowed to lead a small marketing team. I took it and ran with it, building my team from the ground up and eventually employing one of my old coworkers. But, as I continued to grow my business, I realized that I wanted to expand my business credibility. I felt a college degree would give me the credibility I needed to succeed. I wanted to show my peers, clients, and the world that I was capable of more than just running a small marketing team. I wanted to be seen as an expert in my field. I started attending many pitch competitions and networking events. I met with successful business owners and entrepreneurs and learned about their journeys. I realized that there were so many opportunities that could open up for me if I had a college degree. That's when I made a goal of getting into Columbia University. I knew that getting into Columbia would not be easy. I had to start enrolling back into community college and taking the necessary classes to transfer. It was a tough decision, but I was determined to succeed. I focused on my studies and tried to connect with my peers. I was amazed at how much I had learned in my time away from college, and I was able to bring new perspectives to the classroom. One year later, I applied to Columbia University and was accepted. I was over the moon with excitement. I had finally achieved my goal, and I was ready to take on the next chapter in my journey. I am determined to make the most of my time at Columbia and connect with my peers. I am now focused on earning my degree and connecting with my peers to empower a community of first-generation, low-income students who would like to pursue their goals in education and business. I want to help these students see that they can achieve their goals, no matter their background. I want to help them see that they can succeed, just like I did. My journey in college has not been easy. But I wouldn't change a thing. I've learned so much about myself while growing as a person. I'm grateful for the challenges I've faced, and I'm ready to take on the next chapter in my journey. I'm determined to empower others and help them achieve their goals, just like I did.

As a child of a Dominican father who immigrated to America when he was just seven years old, I have always struggled to identify with my Hispanic heritage. Growing up, my father became Americanized, making it difficult for me to connect with my cultural roots. Worse, I felt ashamed because I couldn't speak and enunciate Spanish properly. However, that all changed during the pandemic when I decided to take a journey to connect more with my Dominican roots. I spent six months living in the Dominican Republic, staying with family, and getting to know the island. While there, I visited several cities, including Puerto Plata, Juan Dolio, Santo Domingo, Las Terrenas, and Samana. I had the opportunity to visit the home where my father was shortly raised, and I even had the privilege of rocking in the same rocking chair he was rocked in as a child. Meeting cousins and learning about the beauty and the less-than-beautiful side of our culture was a transformative experience for me. I could understand the complexities of our heritage and appreciate the struggles and triumphs of my ancestors. In my journey to connect with my Dominican heritage, I have taken classes in salsa, soca, and reggae. These classes have not only helped me deepen my understanding of my culture but have also allowed me to explore the broader Caribbean region and its rich history and traditions. I am grateful for the experiences I have had during my journey, and I am proud of the progress I have made in connecting with my heritage. Although I still have much to learn, I am excited to continue my journey and embrace my cultural identity. I believe that this journey has taught me the importance of cultural preservation and how crucial it is to understand one's roots. It has also given me a sense of purpose and a greater appreciation for the sacrifices that my ancestors made so that I could have the opportunities I have today. I want to use my experiences to inspire others struggling to connect with their heritage. I want to show them that it is never too late to begin your journey, no matter how far removed you may feel from your roots. I also want to encourage others to embrace their cultural identity and celebrate the unique qualities that make them who they are. My journey to connect with my Dominican heritage has been a life-changing experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore my roots and embrace my cultural identity. I believe that my journey can serve as an inspiration to others who may be struggling to connect with their heritage, and I am excited to continue my journey and deepen my understanding of my culture.

      Your Health Journey Scholarship
As someone who has always been driven to succeed and make positive changes, I am proud of the strides I have made toward a healthier lifestyle. By incorporating habits such as juicing, morning stretching, meditation, and bicycling, I have been able to significantly improve my physical and mental well-being while also achieving greater focus and productivity in my studies. One of the biggest challenges I faced on my journey towards a healthier lifestyle was removing myself from unhealthy relationships and living situations that were causing me a great deal of stress. This was not an easy decision, but it was one that I knew was necessary for my long-term well-being. I was determined to put myself first and create a positive environment supporting my goals and aspirations. The changes I made were not without sacrifice, however. For example, I had to take on more responsibilities like paying rent and other housing costs, which came with a significant financial burden. But despite these challenges, I remained committed to my goal and saw the benefits of my hard work almost immediately. One of the most significant changes I made was incorporating juicing into my diet. By consuming various nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, I was able to provide my body with the essential vitamins and minerals it needed to function at its best. This not only improved my energy levels but also helped me to maintain a healthy weight and reduce my risk of chronic illness. Along with juicing, I also committed to spending 20 minutes each morning stretching and meditating. This simple practice has been a game-changer for me, allowing me to start each day with a clear mind and a positive outlook. By taking this time to focus on my breathing and set intentions for the day, I have cultivated a greater sense of peace and calm, even amid the most stressful situations. Another important aspect of my healthier lifestyle has been incorporating regular exercise into my routine. For me, this has meant taking up bicycling, which not only provides a cardiovascular workout but also allows me to enjoy the great outdoors and get some fresh air. This combination of physical activity and mental relaxation has been a powerful tool in helping me to manage my stress levels and maintain a positive outlook. Finally, I have found that removing myself from unhealthy relationships and living situations has been one of the most transformative steps I have taken on my journey toward a healthier lifestyle. By surrounding myself with positive, supportive people and creating a safe and nurturing environment, I have been able to focus on my well-being and studies with more consistency and ease. Making changes to lead a healthier lifestyle has been a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience for me. Through habits such as juicing, morning stretching, meditation, and bicycling, I have been able to significantly improve my physical and mental well-being while also gaining a greater sense of focus and productivity in my studies. Despite the sacrifices I have had to make along the way, I am confident that these changes will continue to serve me well in the years to come and set me on a path toward a brighter, healthier future.

      Minority/Women in STEM Scholarship
One of the biggest challenges Ive had to overcome while pursuing my education is figuring out my learning style. Growing up, there wasn't an emphasis on education. Work ethic, yes, but not education. When I decided to attend university and study computer science, the demands were much different than my high school experience and my earlier experience taking non-technical classes in community college. Given that Computer Science was completely new to me, it has taken great efforts and periods of trial and error to understand how I best understand and retain new information. I mixed it up with lectures, reading technical material, participating in study groups, assisting others with assignments, Youtube, practice problems, etc. What I found for me that works is lecture notes, along with my summation. Attempting assignments on my own, and practice problems on my own, and then working through the actual solutions with a group. YouTube has been a godsend, as well as just as much exposure to specifics as possible. And when prepping for the test. I focus 70% on what I know and 30% on what I don't. Making sure I can perform high in the areas im confident in (and build more confidence in) and trying to strengthen my weaknesses. Another obstacle I had to overcome was my financial responsibilities. I contribute towards my household in terms of bills and necessities. Going to school full-time means, I can't provide as much financially for my family. Some things Ive done to work around this are deferring for a year and doing my first-year half-time, so I have more savings. While I deferred for a year, I was able to save enough money for my cost of living, I was able to move back in with my family, and I was able to build out a strategy for the next for years. This plan consists of everything im doing, working full-time my first year in school, working half-time now as a full-time student, and next semester I'll be able to focus solely on my education. While also leveraging some student loans (that I hope to pay off sooner so that I don't continue to accrue interest) and some additional government assistance along with internships. I view the opportunity to study computer science and attend school as a privilege. And any obstacles or challenges im facing are those Ive chosen and that Im privileged to have. Life will always present obstacles and challenges, but I believe we choose our "hards" in many cases, and it's really about how we navigate them and take advantage of our choices. And so I hope to get chosen for this award, because yes, it will be helpful and ease some obstacles. But I know obstacles are always there, and it is a privilege even to attempt to get past them, even if our attempts don't work!
Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact Scholarship
I think this quote is saying the common decency and respect that most people typically display when we interact in real life is ignored or tested in online gaming forums, but this is true for many of our social interactions online. Many people may treat the virtual world as a place to share what and how we normally would not in real life. We may share opinions online that we would not share with our friends or colleagues. I view it as everything can be real to everyone, and I like to carry myself online like I would in real life. We do have the power to impact people and vice versa. We are each other's responsibility, so I think it's important for people to use these platforms and the fact we may be a little more comfortable on them, to practice vulnerability vs. aggression
      Minority Students x Stem Scholarship
My niece has impacted me to dive deeper into space. When she was younger, I would take her to coding events with me as a way for both of us to explore programming and coding. Like many people during their first exposure to coding, she found it complicated and intimidating - which made me want to prove to her that it's not impossible. Though it could be difficult, there's no reason why we both couldn't get better at it. So I began taking more initiative in my free time to finish projects we started together during those coding events and then finish them with her so she too could know. However, something can be complicated doesn't mean it's impossible. I want to share my experiences and teach underrepresented groups about tech and programming. I do believe tech designed for the world to use should be designed by the world, with a diversity of thought, experience, and cultural backgrounds so that what is offered to diverse users reflects a diversity of life.
