Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
For much of my life, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to pursue higher education. Orphaned at 11 years old, left without guidance or family, and struggling just to survive, my focus was never on college, it was on making it through each day. My path was anything but traditional. I had only a seventh-grade education before earning my GED at 26 years old, and I spent years in the workforce relying solely on on-the-job training and resilience to move forward.
Now, at 44 years old, I am proving to myself and my children that it is never too late to chase your dreams. I am a first-generation college student, a single mother of three, and a dedicated community advocate, currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Project Management at Colorado Technical University, where I proudly hold a 4.0 GPA.
Despite the challenges I faced, I always had a deep desire to turn my hardships into something meaningful. I have spent my career working in roles where I could help others overcome their struggles, but I always felt like something was missing, I lacked the formal education that would allow me to maximize my impact.
Currently, I help run a non-profit organization that serves individuals battling addiction, mental health challenges, and homelessness. Every day, I work with people who feel lost, unseen, and hopeless, people who remind me of my younger self. Through our programs, I teach them how to rebuild their lives, find purpose, and create success stories out of their pain. My personal experiences have allowed me to connect with them on a deep level, offering not just resources, but empathy, mentorship, and proof that change is possible.
Yet, despite my passion and hands-on knowledge, I know that experience alone is not enough. I returned to school because I want to bring a new level of expertise and strategic leadership to the non-profit sector. I want to learn how to secure funding, develop stronger programs, and create long-term solutions that empower people to break cycles of poverty, addiction, and instability. My education is the key to expanding my impact.
This degree is not just about bettering myself, it’s about creating lasting change. With my education, I plan to:
-Improve and expand the services our non-profit provides, ensuring we reach more people in need.
-Develop stronger, data-driven strategies to make our programs more effective and sustainable.
-Become an advocate for policy change, working to improve systems that often fail those facing hardship.
-Mentor others who, like me, once doubted their ability to succeed, showing them that it is never too late to rewrite their story.
Returning to school at this stage in my life has been a challenge, but it has also been one of the most empowering decisions I have ever made. I was terrified of failing, of being too far behind, of not belonging in an academic setting. But with each completed assignment, each challenge overcome, and each A earned, I have proven to myself that I do belong here. My passion for learning has grown stronger, and I am more determined than ever to succeed, not just for myself, but for my family and my community.
This scholarship would be a life-changing opportunity, alleviating some of the financial stress that comes with balancing college, a demanding career, and raising a family in Colorado’s high-cost environment. More importantly, it would allow me to stay focused on my education and the mission I have dedicated my life to, helping others rise above adversity.

Building a More Empathetic and Understanding World Through My Journey
At 11 years old, I became an orphan, left to navigate life without guidance, support, or stability. The odds were stacked against me, and for years, I struggled to find my purpose. My path was not traditional, I had only a seventh-grade education when I earned my GED at 26 years old. Yet, through every challenge, I developed something invaluable: resilience, deep empathy, and a passion for uplifting others. Today, as a first-generation college student, a single mother of three, and a dedicated advocate for those facing adversity, I am using my lived experiences to create a more compassionate, understanding global community.
I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Project Management at Colorado Technical University, where I proudly maintain a 4.0 GPA. Education has given me confidence and a clear mission, to use my unique background and skills to help people rebuild their lives and find hope.
My work at a Denver-based non-profit is where I have already begun to cultivate empathy and understanding on a larger scale. Our organization supports individuals struggling with addiction, mental health challenges, and homelessness, offering not just resources but a community of support and empowerment. Many of the people we serve feel unheard, unseen, and misunderstood. Because of my own struggles, I can connect with them on a deep level, meeting them where they are with compassion, patience, and unwavering belief in their potential.
My unique talents of resilience, leadership, and the ability to turn adversity into strength, allow me to bridge the gap between struggle and success for others. Through my education, I am gaining the skills to expand the reach of our programs, implement better project management strategies, and create sustainable solutions that foster long-term change. My goal is to build initiatives that promote inclusivity, understanding, and real opportunities for those who have been overlooked or counted out by society.
Beyond my work in the non-profit sector, I am committed to fostering empathy through storytelling. I believe that sharing personal narratives can break down stereotypes, open minds, and inspire action. My own journey, from an orphaned child with little education to a successful college student and community leader, demonstrates that change is possible. I want to use my platform to encourage others to see people not for their mistakes or hardships, but for their strength, resilience, and potential.
This scholarship would help me continue my mission to create a more empathetic world, ensuring that I have the resources to complete my education and bring greater knowledge and innovation to my work. As someone who has overcome immense obstacles, I know firsthand the power of support, understanding, and opportunity, and I am determined to extend that power to others.
By using my education, my lived experiences, and my passion for helping others rise, I will continue working toward a world where every person, regardless of their past, feels valued, supported, and empowered to build a brighter future.

Turning Adversity into Impact: My Journey to Make a Difference
At 11 years old, I became an orphan. With no family, no guidance, and a childhood filled with hardships, the odds were stacked against me. For years, I struggled to find my way, to understand my purpose, and to create a future that was different from my past. It took time, resilience, and an unshakable ambition to turn my life’s challenges into stepping stones rather than barriers. Today, as a first-generation college student, a single mother of three, and an individual deeply committed to serving my community, I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Project Management at Colorado Technical University, where I proudly maintain a 4.0 GPA.
My journey to higher education was not a traditional one. I had only a seventh-grade education when I earned my GED at 26 years old. In every job I’ve had, I learned through hands-on experience, working tirelessly to prove myself. But no matter how hard I worked, I felt the absence of formal education. I wanted to be more than just a hard worker, I wanted to be an asset. This realization led me to finally take the leap into college at 44 years old.
Today, I help run a non-profit organization in Denver, Colorado, dedicated to assisting individuals battling addiction, mental health struggles, and homelessness. We work tirelessly to rebuild lives, restore dignity, and turn pain into success stories. I know firsthand how difficult it is to navigate life without guidance or opportunity, and that is why this work is not just my job, it is my purpose.
Earning my degree is not just a personal achievement; it is a mission. With my education, I will expand the reach and impact of our non-profit. I want to implement stronger project management strategies, secure more funding, and create sustainable programs that offer long-term solutions for those in need. Education will allow me to transform our organization into a powerful force for change, helping more individuals rebuild their lives and break cycles of hardship.
My journey has not been easy, and stepping into college after so many years was intimidating. I was terrified, of failing, of being unprepared, of not belonging. But with every assignment completed, every A earned, and every challenge overcome, I have proven to myself that I belong here. I love my degree program, and it has fueled my confidence, drive, and determination to succeed.
This scholarship would be a life-changing opportunity, not only alleviating some of the financial burdens of college but also fueling my ability to make a greater impact. Colorado’s high cost of living makes pursuing higher education even more daunting, yet I remain determined to push forward for myself, my children, and the many lives I aim to change.
With my degree in hand, I will be a leader, a mentor, and a changemaker. I will take the struggles I’ve endured and use them to empower others. My past may have shaped me, but my ambition and drive define my future. I am ready to create real, lasting change and this scholarship will help me do exactly that.
