Bio

I am a non-traditional student currently finishing my Communications degree at Eastern Kentucky University while working full-time in business development and account management. I am also a young breast cancer survivor, which has shaped a lot of my perspective on resilience, personal growth, and the importance of continuing to pursue goals even during difficult seasons of life. Outside of school and work, I am a huge animal lover and have a miniature dachshund named Jerry who is basically my shadow. I love plants, music, pottery, cooking, and baking sourdough bread from scratch. I am also very interested in technology, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, process improvement, and business transformation, and I hope to continue growing in those areas professionally. I have always loved reading and learning. Some of my favorite books and genres include the Harry Potter series, fantasy novels, autobiographies, and anything related to philosophy, psychology, communication, or human behavior. I enjoy exploring different perspectives and understanding what motivates people, which is one of the reasons I chose communications as my degree field. A lot of my life has involved balancing school, work, family responsibilities, and personal challenges, so I care deeply about advocacy for non-traditional and working students. I enjoy helping people feel supported, included, and understood both professionally and personally.

Cancer has impacted my family in ways that changed not only our daily lives, but also the way I view resilience, relationships, and purpose. As a young breast cancer survivor myself, I have experienced firsthand how cancer reaches far beyond a diagnosis. It affects entire families emotionally, financially, physically, and mentally. While cancer brought fear and uncertainty into my life, it also taught me lessons about perseverance, compassion, and the importance of advocating for both myself and others. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis at 34 completely altered the course of my life. At a time when many people my age were focused on building careers, families, and planning for the future, I was navigating surgeries, treatments, medical appointments, and the emotional weight that comes with hearing the word “cancer.” There were moments when I felt isolated and overwhelmed, especially while trying to maintain some sense of normalcy through work and personal responsibilities. Cancer forced me to confront how fragile life can be, but it also revealed strengths within myself that I did not know I possessed. My family was deeply affected throughout this journey. The emotional toll extended far beyond me as an individual. The people closest to me carried fear, stress, and helplessness while also trying to remain strong and supportive. Cancer changes family dynamics because everyone becomes part of the experience in some way. I learned how important emotional support is during difficult times and how powerful small acts of care can be. Whether it was attending appointments, helping with daily tasks, checking in after treatments, or simply being present during difficult moments, I saw firsthand how much love and support matter during a health crisis. One of the most difficult parts of my experience was balancing treatment and recovery while continuing to pursue my education and professional goals. I have faced delays in my academic journey due to cancer and other significant life challenges, but those experiences strengthened my determination to keep moving forward. As a non-traditional student completing my degree while working full-time, I have learned the importance of adaptability and persistence. Cancer taught me not to take opportunities for granted and to value every step of progress, even when the path forward feels slower or more difficult than expected. Through this experience, I also developed a deeper sense of empathy for others facing invisible battles. You never truly know what someone is carrying behind the scenes. Cancer taught me to lead with compassion, patience, and understanding in both my personal life and professional career. It strengthened my desire to help others feel supported and seen, especially people who may feel overlooked or overwhelmed by their circumstances. Although cancer brought tremendous challenges into my life, it also transformed me into a stronger, more determined, and more compassionate person. It taught me that resilience does not mean never struggling; it means continuing to move forward despite fear and uncertainty. It taught me to appreciate time, relationships, education, and opportunities in a much deeper way. Most importantly, it taught me that even in the darkest moments, there is still room for hope. I am proud of how far I have come, and I hope my story reflects not only survival, but also perseverance, growth, and purpose. That perspective now influences every aspect of my life, from my education and career goals to the way I support others around me. Cancer will always be part of my story, but it no longer defines me. Instead, it gave me a deeper appreciation for life and a stronger desire to make the time I have meaningful, purposeful, and impactful.
