Growing up, facing financial and family challenges have significantly shaped the person I am today. From as far back as I can remember, I have witnessed the importance of determination and problem solving as my family navigated limited financial resources and ongoing personal hardships. These circumstances required me to take on responsibilities beyond what many of those around experienced, including balancing schoolwork with part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, and caregiving duties within my family. While these challenges were often very difficult, they taught me the value of perseverance, time management, and resilience. They also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility, not only for my own future but for supporting those I love and care about. Despite these obstacles, I have remained committed to my education, consistently seeking opportunities to grow both academically and personally.
Funding my post-secondary education is a significant challenge due to financial instability and limited outside support, but these obstacles have only strengthened my determination to succeed. Rather than letting difficulties discourage me, I have learned to approach every challenge with discipline, leadership, and a clear focus on long-term goals. I have developed a mindset that views challenges not as barriers, but as opportunities to learn, adapt, and strengthen my character. Through hard work and persistence, I have been able to maintain strong academic performance while also contributing to my family and community. Each step of my journey has reinforced the belief that education is not just a personal achievement but a tool to create a better life for myself and others.
My educational goal is to pursue higher education in the medical field, with a specific focus on diagnostic medical sonography. I am so deeply passionate about healthcare and the ways technology can be used to improve patient outcomes, particularly in underserved communities. I aspire to become a skilled sonographer who combines technical expertise with empathy and patient-centered care. In the long term, I hope to open a free or low-cost clinic that increases access to essential diagnostic services for those who might otherwise go without care. This vision drives my commitment to developing leadership skills, clinical knowledge, and compassion throughout my education. I believe that being a healthcare professional is not just about mastering technical skills, it is about using those skills to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Most importantly, reassuring them they’re not alone in what they're going through and offering them high quality care for low cost, something I wish I had access to growing up.
In conclusion, my long-term goals go beyond personal career success. I am motivated by the opportunity to serve others and promote health equity, using my education as a platform to uplift communities and improve access to quality care. The challenges I have faced have shaped my resilience, strengthened my determination, and fueled my desire to make a positive impact. Through education, dedication, and service, I aim to build a future where I can not only achieve personal growth but also give back in ways that improve the lives of those who need it most.
“I Matter” Scholarship
One time I truly understood the importance of helping someone in need was when one of my close friends was struggling emotionally during our junior year of high school. At the time, I was also dealing with my own mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, so I recognized many of the signs they were showing—isolating themselves, losing motivation, and pretending everything was fine while clearly hurting inside. Because I grew up in a family where emotions were often ignored, I knew how painful it felt to suffer silently and feel like no one noticed.
My friend began missing school frequently and stopped participating in activities they once loved. They would ignore messages for days and seemed emotionally exhausted whenever we talked. Many people around them assumed they were being distant or lazy, but I could tell there was something deeper going on. Instead of judging them, I decided to simply be present and supportive in the ways I knew how.
At first, helping them was not easy. They were not comfortable opening up, and I understood why. I knew from personal experience how difficult it can be to trust people with your emotions when you are afraid of being misunderstood or dismissed. Rather than pressuring them to talk, I focused on making sure they knew they were not alone. I checked in consistently, helped them catch up on missed assignments, and reminded them that their feelings were valid. Sometimes support looked as simple as sitting with them quietly during lunch or listening without trying to immediately “fix” their problems.
One specific moment that stayed with me was when they finally admitted they had been struggling with severe anxiety and did not know how to ask for help. They told me they felt ashamed because they thought they were disappointing everyone around them. Hearing that reminded me so much of my own experiences growing up. I encouraged them to speak with a trusted adult and reassured them that needing help did not make them weak. Over time, they slowly began opening up to family members and seeking support from school counselors.
This experience changed me in many ways. It taught me that helping someone does not always mean solving their problems. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is offer patience, compassion, and understanding when someone feels invisible. It also showed me how important emotional support can be, especially for people who come from backgrounds where mental health is rarely discussed.
As a first-generation student pursuing a career in diagnostic medical sonography, this experience strengthened my desire to work in healthcare. I want to be the type of healthcare professional who not only provides quality medical care, but also treats patients with empathy and kindness. Many people are fighting battles that cannot be seen from the outside, and I believe compassion can make a significant difference in someone’s healing process.
Helping my friend reminded me that even small acts of support can impact a person’s life. It reinforced my belief that everyone deserves to feel heard, cared for, and understood, especially during their most difficult moments.

Growing up as a first-generation student in a family where mental health was rarely discussed shaped the way I viewed myself, my relationships, and my future career. In my household, struggles like depression, anxiety, and PTSD were often ignored or pushed aside because survival came first. Emotions were not something openly talked about, and asking for help was sometimes seen as weakness. Because of this, I learned at a very young age to suppress my feelings instead of understanding them.
By the age of ten, I began experiencing anxiety and depression myself, but I did not know how to express what I was feeling. I often felt isolated and confused, especially when I was punished or dismissed for trying to speak about my emotions. Over time, I became used to hiding my struggles and convincing myself that I simply needed to “push through.” Although this helped me appear strong on the outside, it also created unhealthy habits. When life becomes overwhelming, I sometimes shut down emotionally, lose motivation in the things I love, or unintentionally distance myself from the people who care about me. These experiences have taught me how deeply mental health affects every part of a person’s life, especially when support and resources are limited.
At the same time, these challenges have shaped my beliefs in meaningful ways. I believe mental health deserves the same level of care, compassion, and attention as physical health. I have learned that many people suffer silently because they are afraid of judgment, cannot afford treatment, or were never taught how to express their emotions. My experiences have made me more empathetic toward others because I understand what it feels like to carry pain quietly while still trying to succeed academically, socially, and personally.
My mental health journey has also influenced my relationships. I value genuine support systems and open communication because I know how damaging silence can be. Although I still struggle at times with vulnerability, I have become more aware of the importance of checking in on others and creating spaces where people feel safe being honest about their struggles. I want to continue breaking the cycle of emotional suppression that has existed in my family for generations.
These experiences are a major reason why I aspire to pursue a career in diagnostic medical sonography. Healthcare professionals often meet patients during vulnerable moments in their lives, and I want to be someone who provides not only quality care, but also comfort and understanding. My own struggles have taught me patience, resilience, and compassion—qualities that are essential in healthcare. As a first-generation student, pursuing higher education is already an act of perseverance, but my goal goes beyond personal success. I want to create a future where I can give back to my community, help people feel seen and cared for, and eventually open my own sonography clinic.
While mental health challenges have been a painful part of my journey, they have also given me strength, self-awareness, and purpose. They have motivated me to pursue a career centered on healing, empathy, and service, while also inspiring me to continue working toward healing myself.

First Generation College, First Generation Immigrant Scholarship
As a first-generation student raised by an immigrant single mother, my personal experiences have deeply shaped my sense of purpose and determination. Growing up, I witnessed my mother work tirelessly to provide stability and opportunity for our family despite financial struggles and the challenges of adapting to a new country. Her resilience taught me the value of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance, and it inspired me to pursue higher education not only for myself, but for my family and community as well.
Navigating school and planning for college without guidance was often difficult, but those experiences pushed me to become independent and motivated. Education became more than just a goal; it became my way of creating a better future and honoring my mother’s sacrifices. Through these challenges, I discovered my passion for healthcare and my desire to help others feel cared for and supported during vulnerable moments.
I hope to pursue a career in sonography because it combines compassionate patient care with meaningful medical work. Growing up in an underserved community, I saw how important accessible and empathetic healthcare is, especially for immigrant families. My long-term goal is to open my own sonography clinic where patients feel welcomed, respected, and understood. My experiences have taught me that success is most meaningful when it allows you to give back and uplift others.

Growing up as a first-generation student raised by an immigrant single mother, I learned early on what sacrifice, resilience, and determination look like. My mother worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for me that she never had herself. Watching her overcome challenges while still encouraging me to dream bigger shaped the person I am today. Pursuing a college degree is more than just an educational goal for me—it is a way to honor her sacrifices, create stability for my future family, and give back to the community that helped shape me.
Earning a college degree will completely change the path of my life because it will open doors that were once out of reach for my family. Higher education represents financial stability, professional growth, and the ability to build generational opportunities. As a first-generation college student, I am navigating a path that no one in my immediate family has experienced before. Although this journey can feel intimidating at times, it also motivates me because I know my success can inspire younger family members to believe that higher education is possible for them too. I want future generations of my family to grow up seeing college as an achievable goal rather than an impossible dream.
Personally, earning a degree would symbolize perseverance, independence, and purpose. It would represent every long day, every challenge overcome, and every sacrifice my mother made to give me a better future. A college degree would not only allow me to support myself financially, but it would also give me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives through healthcare. I want to prove to myself and to others from similar backgrounds that circumstances do not define a person’s potential.
I am passionate about pursuing a career in sonography because it combines patient care, compassion, and technology in a way that truly changes lives. Sonographers play an important role in helping diagnose medical conditions and providing comfort to patients during vulnerable moments. I have always been drawn to careers where I can directly help others, and sonography gives me the opportunity to make a difference while working in a field that continues to grow and evolve. I am especially inspired by the idea of providing quality care to underserved communities and helping patients feel seen, heard, and cared for.
To pursue this passion, I have remained focused on my education and committed to preparing myself for a future in healthcare. I have worked hard academically while balancing personal responsibilities and challenges that come with being a first-generation student. I continue to research the field of sonography, learn about patient care, and seek opportunities that strengthen my understanding of healthcare professions. Every step I take toward my education is fueled by my desire to create a better future for myself, my family, and the community I hope to serve one day.
My dream is not only to become a successful sonographer, but eventually to open my own sonography clinic where patients feel welcomed, respected, and cared for. Through education, I hope to create a legacy of opportunity, compassion, and perseverance that future generations of my family can continue building upon.
