What inspired me to advance or to even start my education was the sacrifices my mom had to make for my sister and me. I was born in Colombia and my family’s economic status was not the best, there was time where we did not know where to get money from to purchase my school materials, uniforms, and food for us since Colombia does not have much to offer its citizens. I saw the sacrifices my mom made to even pay our tuition for me to go to school and get an education, I have always aspired to work in the medical field but at times I was not sure, and I always thought to myself what life would be like if I had better opportunities. When I was around 8 my mom, sister, and I6 came to the US and when we first got here it was challenging not being able to communicate with other people, different culture, and different dynamic but even though I started school in an elementary in Brooklyn and I actually was advanced to another grade due to my previous grades and at first, I hated it here because I always thought I wouldn't be able to learn English, but I stayed consistent and read English books a lot and somehow Rosetta Stone helped me a lot back then; after that I was so happy to learn about different things and there was that life that I always wanted. When I was 10 years old my great grandmother passed away of heart complications and I had a rough time but that is when I realized that I certainly wanted to be in the medical field and become a Cardiac Nurse because I would like to help other peoples loved ones like other professionals did with my nana and of course repay my mom for everything she has done by becoming a professional. Fastforward to high school I was focused on my classes, earning credits, extracurricular activities, and it payed off! I was awarded with an academic excellence award by the special armed forces, I got the purple Heart medal and certification, commendation, and many more. I successfully graduated high school with a 3.5 GPA and honors, I enrolled into college, and it has been the greatest decision ever because this country has given me the opportunity to learn and develop my knowledge. I recently completed a course at Harvard for General psychiatric management for BPD and it was remarkably interesting because they had scenarios of what people go through with this disorder and how it is very underestimated and not a lot of people in educated on the topic and it keeps adding more on why I am so passionate to work in the healthcare field.
