A dimly lit computer and mouse clicks are echoing throughout the darkened classroom. On my screen is Adobe Illustrator, on my chair is me. I am creating a poster for the district as one of my teachers who commissioned me to. I see this as my future. Graphic Design is a huge passion of mine, and I had only discovered it early in my high school career. If it wasn't for the Graphic Design pathway, I wouldn't be who I am today.
The Graphic Design Pathway at Valley High has always been a course I looked forward to since I was a freshman, when I first toured the classroom and learned what the pathway as even about. Throughout my four years at the school, I've been taught a lot from the GFX pathway, from learning how to use Adobe to creating full on posters and game logos on the program. It also brought me closer to people and peers in my class, as well as to my passion of creativity. I was always an art kid, but I never thought about bringing this skill into the digital world of posters and logos and designs for billboards.
GFX, however, wasn't just an easy, sit-down-and-stare-at-a-screen type of course. You had to actually put effort into your art and use your creativity to make your designs unique and different from others; you had to stand out to make the mark. When something goes wrong in my design, I always would ask for advice, to which I take personally. I also look at the bigger picture of my art- does this look like something that could be a functioning logo?- critiquing my own art is just a part of the design process to make things better with every revision. The pathway brought me to my senses of making mistakes and fixing them; this only makes my art better in the long run.
The future is very close to the present, but thankfully the GFX pathway boosted me far into the creative career of being a Graphic Designer. The skill of knowing mistakes exist (and that its okay to make them) as well as how to use the elements of design molded me into the digital artist I am now. With this profession in mind, I will exceed in college under the same major and become a big time logo/poster creator for companies who commission me.
I've learned a lot about designing and what would work well together from the GFX pathway. From alignment to colors and theme to aesthetics. I gained a lot of information about all of these things with practice during all 4 years of high school. The projects given to me while on the course also helped me gain recognition from the district when designs I had created was approved to be sent to print. Logo and poster making is one of my favorite things to do as a graphic designer, and I will continue furthering my interest in it as a future career.
