My volunteer experiences have allowed me the privilege to witness the transformative power of art, literature, and collective action. As a visual artist, I stand at the intersection of compassion, empathy, and design. Design is a language that transcends borders, communicates ideas, and shapes the world around us. But what happens when only a fraction of voices are heard? The shocking statistic that only 3% of designers are black, as reported in the 2019 AIGA Design Census, awakened a fire within me. It ignited a transformative journey, one driven by a passion for representation in the field of design and the urgent need for diversity and inclusivity. Hi, my name is Melanie and my mission is creating a better, more inclusive world for my community through arts and design. Throughout high school, I dedicated my time and energy to various volunteer initiatives that allowed me to make a positive impact on the lives of others. One of my most meaningful experiences was at the Pelham Arts Center, where I supported the teaching of their youth arts programs. There I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of art and its ability to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster personal growth in young individuals. By volunteering, I had the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant artistic community and nurture the talents of aspiring artists. Along with volunteering at local elementary schools book fairs to inspire the younger generations to submerge themselves in the joy of literature, another incredible experience I had was supporting the Foundation Fighting Blindness, an organization committed to finding treatments and cures for retinal degenerative diseases. Through my involvement in their fundraisers, I witnessed the resilience and strength of individuals living with visual impairments. It deepened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing unique challenges. I learned firsthand the importance of compassion, understanding, and the transformative power of collective action. These volunteer experiences have shaped me into the person I am today—an individual deeply committed to giving back to my community and making a lasting impact on the world.
