My father taught me that service is not simply something you do; it is a way of living. As an Army veteran, he dedicated a part of his life to protecting our country and serving something greater than himself. I am proud of his military service, but I am even more grateful for the way he carried those same principles into our home and shaped the person I am becoming. From my father, I learned that integrity means doing what is right even when no one is watching. I learned that discipline means showing up and giving your best effort, even when something is difficult. Most importantly, I learned that strength is not measured by how much you can accomplish for yourself, but by how willing you are to help others along the way. My father encouraged me to understand the value of service from an early age. Through volunteering with him and participating in community activities, I saw how something as simple as giving your time can make another person feel valued. Those experiences taught me to look beyond my own circumstances and recognize the needs of others. They also helped me appreciate people from different backgrounds and understand that our differences can bring strength to a community rather than divide it. That lesson continues to influence how I approach my education and my future. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I am pursuing computer science because I want to use technology to solve problems and create opportunities for others. My journey has not always been easy. I once struggled in a challenging computer science course and failed it. Instead of allowing that setback to define me, I retook the course, changed how I approached my studies, sought additional help, and ultimately earned an A. My father’s example reminded me that perseverance is not about never falling short; it is about having the discipline and courage to get back up. My interest in technology also began with him. When I was four years old, my father introduced me to computers and taught me how to use a laptop. What began as a childhood experience became a passion that eventually led me to study computer science. Today, I am not only developing technical skills, but also looking for ways to use those skills to serve others. Through mentoring, STEM outreach, and community involvement, I hope to encourage young people—especially those who may not initially see themselves represented in technology—to recognize their own potential. Being the daughter of an Army veteran has given me more than a connection to military service. It has given me a lifelong example of sacrifice, responsibility, perseverance, and compassion. My father served our country, and through his example, he taught me to serve my community and pursue my goals with purpose. I carry his lessons with me every day. As I continue my education and prepare for a career in technology, I hope to honor my father not only by being proud of what he accomplished, but by becoming someone who uses her own opportunities to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

When I think about why I chose computer science, I realize it was never simply about learning how to code. I was drawn to the idea that technology can turn an idea into something real—something that can solve a problem, make someone's life easier, or open a door that did not exist before. My interest in computer science began when I was introduced to programming through STEM experiences and eventually took a JavaScript course in high school. I enjoyed the challenge of figuring out why something worked, why it did not, and how I could make it better. That curiosity continued to grow through college, where I have explored programming, information systems, artificial intelligence, and technology through both coursework and hands-on experiences. Even when computer science challenged me academically, including having to retake Logic and Algorithms, I learned that struggling with something does not mean I am not meant to do it. I earned an A the second time and became even more determined to finish what I started. After earning my degree in Computer Science, my goal is to build a career where technology and purpose intersect. I am especially interested in artificial intelligence, data, and secure technology within the energy industry. My experience as a Duke Energy AI/Data Analyst Intern showed me how technology can contribute to larger systems that people depend on every day. I want to continue developing solutions that make organizations more efficient, secure, and innovative while ultimately improving the communities they serve. In learning about Chris Jackson, what stood out to me most was not simply that he built a successful career in technology. It was that he understood the value of being present for people and helping them. I see that same idea reflected in the way I approach my own experiences. Through the Duke Energy STARS program, I have mentored and introduced younger students—many from underserved communities—to STEM. As a Makerspace IT Lab Assistant at UNC Charlotte, I help students learn technology, including leading 3D-printing training and providing one-on-one support. I have also spent years volunteering with Sarah’s House, where I learned that sometimes making an impact begins with simply showing someone that you care. Chris's story reminds me that a degree can be more than a credential; it can become the foundation for a life of impact. I am working toward that same possibility. Receiving this scholarship would help ease the financial responsibility of completing my education while allowing me to continue investing my time, energy, and skills into technology and the people I hope to serve through it. I would be honored to carry forward a small part of Chris Jackson’s legacy: using an education in technology not only to build a career, but to help others along the way.

Education has always meant more to me than earning a degree. I see education as a way to create opportunities, build confidence, and help people recognize their own potential. As a Black woman pursuing a degree in Computer Science, I understand how important it is to see women who look like you succeeding in fields where you may not always see yourself represented. My experiences in STEM have motivated me to become that person for others. Through mentoring, volunteering, and sharing what I have learned, I have worked to encourage young women and girls to believe that they belong in technology and that their ideas have value. One of the most meaningful ways I have supported women's empowerment is through my involvement with STEM education and mentorship. Through Duke Energy STARS, I have had opportunities to work with younger students, many of whom come from communities that have historically had fewer opportunities to explore technology. I enjoy helping students learn about STEM in a way that makes it feel exciting and achievable rather than intimidating. My experience with Black Girls Code also showed me how powerful it can be when young Black girls are given the opportunity to learn programming and create something of their own. Now, as I continue my education, I want to pass that encouragement forward. I have also had the opportunity to become a mentor myself, supporting a younger girl and showing her that education can open doors she may not have imagined for herself. My leadership has also grown through my work at the UNC Charlotte Makerspace, where I help students develop technical skills and become more comfortable using technology. I have led 3D-printing training sessions and helped students work through technical challenges one-on-one. These experiences have taught me that empowerment is not always about being the person in front of the room; sometimes it is about being the person who takes the time to explain something, encourage someone who is struggling, or remind them that they are capable. My volunteer experiences have reinforced that belief. From volunteering at Sarah's House and supporting young people to participating in STEM outreach, I have learned that investing in others can create a lasting impact beyond a single interaction. Charlene K. Howard's legacy of education, leadership, and mentorship is meaningful to me because those are the same values I hope to carry throughout my own life. I want my Computer Science education to be more than a personal achievement. I want to use it to create opportunities for others, particularly young women who may be uncertain about whether they belong in technology. My ambition is to build a career in technology where I can continue learning while also opening doors for others. I believe true empowerment happens when we use what we have learned to help someone else move forward. By continuing to educate, mentor, and encourage the next generation, I hope to honor the spirit of Charlene Howard and leave the same kind of positive influence on others that educators and mentors have had on me.

My story is one of persistence, growth, and learning to believe in myself. I am a senior Computer Science student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, pursuing a field that challenges me to think differently every day. My journey through college has not been perfect. In fact, some of my most important lessons came from the moments when I was not sure I would succeed. One of those moments came when I failed my Logic and Algorithms course. I remember how much that experience affected my confidence. I began wondering whether I was really capable of completing a Computer Science degree. Instead of allowing that failure to determine my future, I decided to try again. I retook the course, changed the way I studied, asked for help, and worked through the areas that had given me trouble. The second time, I earned an A. That experience changed me. I learned that perseverance is not simply continuing when things are easy. It is choosing to continue when you have every reason to doubt yourself. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my education and has influenced how I approach challenges in both school and my professional life. My internship at Duke Energy gave me an opportunity to see where my Computer Science education could take me. As a Nuclear AI/Data Analyst Intern, I worked with developers and business stakeholders to explore how artificial intelligence could improve real-world processes. I learned that technology is not just about writing code. It is about understanding problems, asking the right questions, evaluating solutions, and creating tools that can make a meaningful difference. The experience strengthened my interest in artificial intelligence and helped me envision a career where I can contribute to the future of technology. Another important part of my story has been mentorship. Through an internship program at UNC Charlotte, I was fortunate to receive guidance from professionals at Amazon and Duke Energy. Their encouragement helped me grow in ways that went beyond technical skills. They showed me the importance of asking questions, building relationships, and having confidence in my abilities. Recently, I was invited back to that same program—but this time as a mentor. I was genuinely honored to move from being the person receiving guidance to becoming the person providing it. I now have the opportunity to mentor another young girl, and that experience has given me an even stronger sense of purpose. I want her to know that challenges do not mean she is incapable and that she deserves to see herself in spaces where women have historically been underrepresented. This scholarship would help me take the next step toward my career goals by easing the financial burden of completing my education and allowing me to focus more fully on preparing for my future in technology. I hope to build a career in artificial intelligence and data, using technology to solve meaningful problems and create better opportunities for others. My ultimate goal is bigger than earning a degree or securing a successful career. I want to become the kind of professional and mentor who opens doors for others. I know what it feels like to question whether you belong. I also know what it feels like when someone believes in you. I want to be that person for someone else. My story is still being written, but I know what I want the next chapter to say: that I persevered, I grew, and I used every opportunity I was given to help create opportunities for others.

I chose STEM because I have always been curious about how things work and, more importantly, how they can work better. Computer Science gives me the opportunity to take that curiosity and turn it into something useful. As a senior Computer Science student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I have discovered that technology is not just about computers or writing code. It is about solving problems, asking questions, and creating possibilities that did not exist before. My journey has not always been easy. One of the most difficult moments in college came when I failed my Logic and Algorithms course. For a while, that failure made me question whether I belonged in Computer Science. I had to decide whether one difficult experience would define me or whether I would use it as motivation to grow. I chose to retake the course. I changed how I studied, asked for help, worked through what I did not understand, and ultimately earned an A. That experience changed more than my transcript. It changed how I see myself. I learned that being successful in STEM does not mean having every answer immediately. It means being curious enough to ask questions, humble enough to learn, and determined enough to keep going when the answer is difficult to find. My passion for technology grew even stronger during my internship at Duke Energy, where I worked as a Nuclear AI/Data Analyst. I had the opportunity to explore artificial intelligence and see how emerging technology could address real-world challenges. Working with developers and business stakeholders, I learned that technology is most powerful when it is connected to the needs of real people. That experience sparked an even greater interest in artificial intelligence and showed me that I want to be part of shaping how these technologies are developed and used. Being a woman in STEM also means something personal to me. I know how meaningful it can be to see someone who believes in your potential, especially when you are still learning to believe in yourself. During my time at UNC Charlotte, I participated in an internship program where I was fortunate to be mentored by professionals from Amazon and Duke Energy. Their encouragement helped me grow academically and professionally. Recently, I was invited to return to that same program, but this time as a mentor. I was genuinely honored. I went from being the student receiving guidance to becoming the woman providing it. I now mentor another young girl, and I hope she learns from me what I learned from my own mentors: that she belongs in these spaces and that her curiosity is an asset, not a weakness. As a woman in STEM, I want my impact to extend beyond my own career. I want to contribute to technology through innovation, but I also want to help create a stronger path for those who come after me. I want to mentor young women, encourage them to explore technology, and remind them that they do not have to fit a certain image to succeed in STEM. I chose Computer Science because I want to solve problems. I chose to remain in STEM because I believe there are still problems worth solving. And I want to make a difference by ensuring that more women have the confidence, knowledge, and opportunity to help solve them.

One of the technology experiences I have been most passionate about was my work during my internship at Duke Energy. As a Nuclear AI/Data Analyst Intern, I had the opportunity to explore how artificial intelligence could be used to improve the way people work. What made the experience meaningful to me was that I was not simply learning about AI from a textbook. I was seeing firsthand how technology could take a problem that seemed complicated and turn it into something that could be improved. One of the projects I worked on involved developing and testing prompts for AI tools such as OpenAI and Claude. At first, I thought the process would be as simple as asking a question and accepting whatever answer the system provided. I quickly learned that it was much more complicated than that. A good AI response depends on how thoughtfully the question is constructed, what information the system is given, and how carefully the results are evaluated. I became interested in the process of figuring out why an AI response worked well in one situation but not another. I would test different approaches, examine the results, and think about how the prompts could be improved. I also worked with developers and business stakeholders, which taught me that technology is most effective when the people creating it understand the needs of the people using it. That experience changed the way I see Computer Science. Before my internship, I often thought about technology primarily in terms of programming, algorithms, and solving problems on a computer. My experience at Duke Energy showed me a much bigger picture. Technology is also about people. It is about understanding a challenge, asking better questions, communicating ideas, and creating something that makes someone's work easier, safer, or more effective. What inspires me most about technology is that there is always another problem to solve. There is always something that can be improved, redesigned, or imagined differently. I enjoy the feeling of not knowing the answer at first and then working through the problem until something begins to make sense. That curiosity is one of the reasons I have continued pursuing Computer Science, even when the journey has been difficult. I experienced that difficulty in one of my own classes when I failed Logic and Algorithms the first time I took it. I could have allowed that experience to convince me that Computer Science was not for me. Instead, I retook the course, changed my approach, and earned an A. That experience and my internship taught me the same lesson in different ways: some of the most rewarding results come from refusing to give up when the first attempt does not work. As I prepare to graduate from UNC Charlotte, I am excited about continuing to learn and grow in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and data. I want to work on technology that has a purpose beyond simply being innovative. I want to help create solutions that make a real difference for people and organizations. For me, technology is inspiring because it gives me the opportunity to be both a problem solver and a creator. I may not know what problem I will be solving ten years from now, but I know I want to be part of the generation that finds the answer.

I have learned that sometimes the most meaningful measure of success is not how far you have gone, but how many people you can help along the way. I am a senior Computer Science student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and my journey has taught me that success rarely happens alone. As an African American woman pursuing a career in technology, I have experienced moments when I questioned whether I belonged in such a challenging field. I have also learned that having someone believe in you can make a tremendous difference. That realization has shaped both who I am and the kind of professional I want to become. One of the most meaningful experiences of my college journey has been participating in a mentorship program at UNC Charlotte. Through the program, I was fortunate to have mentors who helped me see possibilities beyond the classroom. I was mentored by a professional from Amazon and also by someone at Duke Energy, where I later had the opportunity to complete an internship. Their guidance helped me understand that professional growth is not just about technical knowledge. It is also about asking questions, building relationships, being willing to learn, and having the confidence to pursue opportunities even when you are not sure you are ready. My experience at Duke Energy allowed me to put those lessons into practice. As a Nuclear AI/Data Analyst Intern, I worked with developers and business stakeholders to explore how artificial intelligence could be used to improve real-world processes. The experience expanded my understanding of technology and showed me how Computer Science can be used to solve problems far beyond the classroom. It also strengthened my interest in artificial intelligence and my desire to build a career where technology can have a meaningful impact. One of the greatest surprises of my journey came recently when I was invited to return to the same UNC Charlotte program—not as a mentee, but as a mentor. I was genuinely honored. I remembered what it felt like to be the student receiving encouragement and guidance, so being asked to provide that same support to another young girl meant more to me than simply adding “mentor” to my résumé. It showed me how much I had grown. I had gone from needing someone to help me see my potential to becoming someone who could help another young woman see hers. That experience changed how I think about success. I no longer see my education as something that benefits only me. Earning my Computer Science degree will give me the knowledge and skills to build a career in technology, but I also want it to give me a platform from which I can open doors for others. I want to be the person who tells a young student, “You belong here,” especially when she is not yet convinced of it herself. I want to share what I have learned from my failures, my mentors, and my professional experiences so that someone else may have an easier path. My goal is to build a career in technology, particularly in areas where artificial intelligence and innovation can solve meaningful problems. But my definition of success extends beyond my career. I want to create a lasting impact by mentoring, encouraging, and helping others recognize opportunities they may not have imagined for themselves. I began this journey as a mentee. Today, I am a mentor. That transition reminds me that the greatest achievement is not simply reaching the next level—it is reaching back and helping someone else rise with you.

The person who has had one of the greatest influences on my life is Katherine Johnson, the African American mathematician whose work helped NASA accomplish some of its most important milestones in space exploration. Although I never had the opportunity to meet her, her story has become meaningful to me as an African American Computer Science student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As I prepare for graduation, I often think about the courage and determination she demonstrated while pursuing a career in a field where people who looked like her were not always expected to succeed. One of the lessons I admire most about Katherine Johnson is that she did not allow obstacles to determine her future. She faced barriers because she was both Black and a woman, yet she continued to learn, ask questions, and prove herself through her work. Her story has taught me that success does not mean never struggling. It means having the courage to keep going when things do not go according to plan. I learned that lesson personally through one of the most difficult experiences of my college journey: my Logic and Algorithms course. I failed the class the first time I took it. For me, that was more than a disappointing grade. It made me question whether I was capable of succeeding in Computer Science and whether I truly belonged in a field that demanded so much from me. It was humbling to realize that working hard did not always guarantee the result I wanted. I had a choice. I could allow that failure to become the story I told myself about my abilities, or I could try again. I chose to try again. When I retook Logic and Algorithms, I approached the course differently. I spent more time studying, asked questions when I did not understand something, and refused to be embarrassed by what I did not know. Most importantly, I learned to be patient with myself. By the end of the semester, I earned an A. That A means much more to me than a letter on my transcript. It represents perseverance. It reminds me that one setback does not define my ability or my future. Katherine Johnson's example helped me understand that sometimes the greatest accomplishment is not succeeding the first time, but having the determination to keep pursuing your goal when success does not come easily. As I move toward graduation and a career in technology, I want to carry that lesson with me. I hope to use my education to solve meaningful problems, create opportunities, and encourage other students who may question whether they belong in STEM. I want my presence in computer science to demonstrate that there is room for people from every background to contribute, innovate, and lead. Katherine Johnson showed me that talent can open a door, but perseverance is what allows us to walk through it. Failing that course taught me that I am capable of walking through difficult doors.

Most students given the opportunity would love to stay home and sleep in late, as opposed to getting up early, getting dressed, and taking the long dreaded bus trip to school. During the pandemic, I initially felt the same way for the first few weeks. However, as more time passed, I began to feel disassociated from my teachers, friends, and classmates. This feeling of disconnect started to affect not only my grades but also my mental health. In my computer science class, when an assignment was given to develop an application that addressed a real-life issue facing our society, my creative wheels started spinning. Facing my issues with mental health at the time, I came up with the idea to develop an application that tracked one’s mental state using a scale rating of 1 to 10. When the inputted number was 8 or higher, red was displayed, which signaled that the person should seek help from a mental health professional. If someone’s mental health continued on a downward course over several days, the names and numbers of a variety of professionals appeared on the screen. My application also included a section to journal one’s feelings daily. From my personal experience, journaling was not only a release of thoughts and emotions I had been bottling up, but it also forced me to hash out a problem and come up with solutions. I found it easier to sift through my feelings more easily when the problem was documented. This technique helped improve my mental health and I continue to use this method of healing to this day. By adding a journaling component to the app, I hoped that others could also discover a way to manage problems, find solutions, and seek help when needed. The creation and development of this app was a way of giving back not only to myself but also to those facing mental health problems, which so often go ignored. By being innovative and creative using coding, I know I will be able to create life-changing applications in the future. Another societal issue that I would like to tackle if I had the resources would be to expand opportunities for children in underserved communities. To begin developing this concept, I would focus on creating a proactive mentorship program. Mentoring programs have the potential to contribute to positive outcomes for at-risk youth across a variety of demographic groups. I would plan to first actively recruit volunteers who are willing to offer mentorship, assist in training sessions, and then partner with local schools and community centers to find young people who would benefit from a mentorship opportunity. To further grow this idea, I would develop an application that will make it easier for the mentors to connect with children who would benefit from this service. After establishing relationships with local community leaders and school officials, my long-term plan would be to partner with a community center in an underserved location and offer free computer classes to the mentees to expose them to the field of STEM. Since STEM is a vital field of study it would provide them with real-world exposure to significant math, science, technology, and engineering concepts. From this experience, my dream is for them to be inspired and develop a passion for STEM, leading to a brighter future.

It was a bitterly cold day in January, as I sat in the back seat of one of the volunteer’s cars, nervous and reluctant knowing that I would be spending the day with brand new people in an unfamiliar place. It was the first time I would be traveling to take part in SALT, “Serving All with Love Together”, a group that travels to Baltimore to serve breakfast to the homeless on weekends. Service has been integrated into my curriculum since freshman year, but as a junior, this was the first time I was able to participate in person due to COVID. Although I was excited to finally be able to interact and talk to those I was helping, there was a degree of nervousness and worry. I would be in a new environment surrounded by completely new people as I was one of the only ones from my school. Despite my concerns, I pushed past the anxiety and put my best foot forward knowing the goal of service is to ultimately help others. As I passed out the steaming oatmeal to those waiting in line, an older woman with stained clothes approached me. She said in a soft tone, “Thank you for coming down here, it means a lot to me when you guys do this. It makes my week.” At that moment, this simple statement changed my whole narrative on service. After hearing this kind woman's words, I immediately felt a sense of happiness and motivation to continue this work. Throughout time as I kept traveling to Baltimore on the weekends, she recognized me and I found comfort in our familiar bond. I was a part of making someone’s life better and that was so meaningful. I was no longer nervous about participating in the service. Instead, I wanted to do it for the joy that it brought me and others. Soon thereafter, I became involved in even more service opportunities such as assisting the elderly and providing entertainment to children of impoverished families, and looked forward to assisting and donating my time. Not only did this experience spark a passion in me to help others, but it taught me different views on judgment. Seeing and helping those in need opened my mind to others’ experiences and instilled in me not to make assumptions based on one’s background. Although I was only there on weekends, I saw into their worlds and was able to see things from their point of view. Even for a short period, I experienced the environment they live in which often lacked the basic needs of security and adequate shelter. People struggle every day with not having enough money to feed themselves and often we don’t know their story from afar. However, if we could all be more compassionate and show kindness to those we do not know, the world might become more united. My experience with the SALT organization has ignited a desire to address the important issue of food insecurity. I realize that providing warm meals to the homeless is not a solution to this issue, and understand that a more in-depth analysis needs to be made to find the root causes. I would like to play an important role in determining the causes and addressing them. Service has shifted from an obligation to a passion of mine, and it is essential to who I am. Many people who are in poverty do not have access to basic items such as food, and I would love to be able to provide them with the resources they need and deserve.

“Wow, how did it do that?” These were my words after using the ABC mouse application on my parent’s laptop for the first time. I became fascinated with this program and how it was able to make calculations and complete puzzles interactively. Although my father retired from the Army before I was born, I have him to thank for the valuable skill of computing that I learned from him. My father began exposing me to the laptop when I was only 4 years old. At this young age, my interest in computers began to grow and was the start of my passion for STEM, which has continued to this day. After exposing me to many learning applications, he began teaching me how to use the Microsoft application suite. He gave me assignments like using a Powerpoint presentation to step through my favorite recipe. He always told me that technology is the future of the world and that it was important for me to learn how to use and navigate it. Being in the military, my father always exercised disciplined and was used to routine, so I learned this trait from him. In the beginning, he came home daily and showed me how to use the internet, until one day, I began using it without assistance. By the time I was five, I was using the computer with ease and learned how to use the Microsoft suite by the time I was seven. Because of my father’s persistence and initial exposure to the computer, I eventually became interested in learning the inner workings of a machine and expanded my knowledge by learning how to install software and connect devices and printers to a network. From there, I took my first Computer Science class and eventually became the go-to person for my friends when they have computer problems. I have become very skilled at troubleshooting and resolving issues. It was my father who also first introduced me to service. Being in the military, it was his duty to serve others under many circumstances. He introduced me to many non-profit organizations that he served for and we gave out Thanksgiving dinners and on Christmas. At the time, I did not understand and wondered why we couldn’t enjoy the holiday as a family, but looking back it is a lesson that I am so glad he provided me. He taught me many good qualities including having integrity, being punctual, serving my community, and being loyal and reliable. I used the values that he taught me to shape into the person that I am, and I thank him for teaching me the valuable skill of computing. Out of all the qualities that I learned from him, the best one is to be more compassionate and show kindness to those we do not know. He always told me that if we all exhibit compassion towards others, the world might become more united. Due to my father’s initial exposure to the computer and my interest that followed, I am going to be pursuing my dream career as a Software Developer. Using my learned skills, I plan to develop applications that will have a positive impact on the world, especially regarding under-represented populations. Long-term, my goal is to open a community center in low-income areas and offer free computer sessions to young children from minority groups. The biggest gift would be to hear these children say the words I once said when I first used a computer - “Wow, how did it do that?”

“Wow, how did it do that?” These were my words after using the ABC mouse application on my mom’s laptop for the first time. I became fascinated with this program and how it was able to make calculations and complete puzzles interactively. At this young age, my interest in computers began to grow as I started to learn the inner workings of a computer, in addition to how to install software and connect devices to a network. This was the start of my passion for STEM, which has continued to this day. Desiring to further my knowledge in high school, I took a Computer Science course and created two JavaScript applications. This was challenging as it was my first exposure to coding, but I enjoyed learning the concepts and using my imagination to design applications that solve real-world problems. I have also taken a Python class with an organization called Black Girls Code and was part of a team that developed a Mental Health app with the same organization. Although I have some valuable experience in computer science, I understand there is so much more to be discovered and learned within this field. To further explore this area of study, my goal is to attend college and major in Computer Science. Being able to write code is a valuable skill, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to build upon my current skillset in the future. Since continued learning is so important to be at the forefront of my field, I also plan to remain current in my studies and keep an awareness of the latest technology and ongoing research. In addition to my love of computers, I also have a strong commitment to service and helping others. I have volunteered for several organizations since I was eight, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help where I feed the homeless citizens in Baltimore every Sunday and Bello Mache where I make cooking videos to entertain people with disabilities. Independent of service, my desire to help others feel included has made its way into my personal life. I have welcomed foreign exchange students into our school by making sure they are adjusting well to a new environment. To this day, the bond and friendships that developed from these interactions still exist. I feel that everyone has a voice and the right to be heard and I want to continue helping others in the future as someone who has grown to be an accepting and compassionate individual. After receiving my degree, I will be well-equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue my dream career as a Software Developer. Using these experiences, I plan to develop applications that will have a positive impact on the world, especially regarding under-represented populations. Some of my ideas include applications that link the homeless with available food, shelter, and safety, as well as an application that will link under-served children with mentors in their area. I plan to offer these applications free of charge to those in need as well as organizations that serve the homeless and under-served populations. Long-term, my goal is to open up a community center in low-income areas and offer free computer sessions to young children from minority groups. The biggest gift would be to hear these children say the words I once said when I first used a computer - “Wow, how did it do that?”

At the tender age of five, I experienced what it felt like to be racially excluded while attending a private school in Maryland. Seeing a group of my classmates playing together, I approached them wanting to join in on the fun. Suddenly, one of the students pushed me away and said “you can’t play with us because you are brown. We don’t play with brown people”. At that moment, I immediately felt confused, embarrassed, angry, and hurt, wondering why anyone would treat me differently because of my skin color. After the school failed to address the issue, my parents transferred me to another private school, Trinity. With this event still vivid in my mind, I vowed to never let exclusion of any kind exist in my presence. The setback that I faced was very low morale, low self-esteem and embarrassment about who I was as a person. After transferring to another school, I immediately felt love and acceptance as I walked onto campus. Part of this I believe was due to the school’s commitment to service. Although their mandatory service requirement was new for me, as the years grew on, I discovered this requirement helped shape my character. I began acquiring my hours as I moved on to high school by assisting the elderly and coordinating the collection of food and clothing to be donated to the homeless. However, I always felt that I could do more especially in the area of diversity and inclusion. This led me to become involved in a cultural day, where students of all faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds showcase their talent or a favorite dish to promote inclusion and help others learn about new cultures. A combination of service to others, learning about other cultures, and students embracing me for who I am, my morale and confidence eventually improved greatly. I also became confident and accepting of who I am, which is a bright, loyal and funny friend, daughter and student. What I learned is that exclusion often stems from a lack of knowledge and understanding about someone’s background, so my plan is to host informative sessions showcasing different cultures that would allow for greater understanding and respect within the campus community. While my past experience with racial exclusion was a very unfortunate and traumatic event, it is just one part of my past that has helped shape me into the person that I am today. I am proud to have grown into someone who is accepting, strong, and compassionate. My ability to exhibit leadership and advocacy for others has enabled me to be an effective and knowledgeable person who stands up for others and always encourages inclusion. The truth is that without that traumatic experience, I don't know if I would be as passionate about inclusion, service and advocacy for others as I am now.

My passion for STEAM was ignited as a young child by my fascination with computers. I recall using my mother's laptop, and quickly discovering how to navigate it with her assistance. Over time this interest grew as I learned the inner workings of a computer and how to install software and connect devices to a network. Now, I am the go-to person for my friends and family for technology-related issues. In addition to my love of STEAM, I have a strong commitment to service and helping others. I volunteer for several organizations, including Sarah’s house (I entertain younger residents with a variety of activities), Our Lady of Perpetual Help (feeding the homeless citizens in Baltimore every Sunday), Brightview Senior Living (Making meals for the elderly), and Bello Mache (I make cooking videos to entertain persons with disabilities). In addition, I mentor the younger girls at my high school. Independent of service, my desire to include others from different backgrounds has made its way into my personal life. I have made an effort to welcome foreign exchange students into our school by making sure they are adjusting well to a new environment. To this day, the bond and friendships that developed from these interactions still exist. Besides having friends from around the world, my chosen circle includes those who are LGBTQ, elderly, Spanish, and disabled. I feel that everyone has a voice and the right to be heard and respected. I am proud to have grown into someone who is accepting, strong, and compassionate. My educational goals include attending college and majoring in Computer Science since I have been fascinated with computers since I was a young child. I have taken a Python class with an organization called Black Girls Code and was also part of a team that developed a Mental Health app with the same organization. I took a Computer Science class and created a JavaScript application also. It was very challenging, and I enjoyed learning the concepts and using my imagination to design an application that was able to solve a real problem. Being able to write code is a valuable skill, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue learning and building upon my current skills. I have attended several STEM Girl Power expos at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory since I was in elementary school. I have also served as a volunteer assistant at some of these events. I have also taken my laptop to my volunteer service activities, in which I entertained younger residents at Sarah’s house. I let the younger children explore my laptop and helped them navigate it and view different websites. For many, this was their first view of technology, and it felt great that I was able to give them their first experience. After receiving my degree, my professional goal is to become a Software Developer. I plan to develop applications that will have a positive impact on the world, which includes helping under-represented populations. Some of my ideas include applications that link the homeless with available food, shelter, and safety, as well as an application that will link under-served children with mentors in their area. My short-term goal is to offer my applications and websites free of charge to those people and organizations that serve the homeless and underserved populations. My long-term goal is to work with our public leaders, officials, and organizations to help eradicate homelessness. This will be no easy task, but using my skill set and determination, I will work hard to approach this problem and make a difference in our world.

During my time with this organization, I was part of a team that developed a Mental Health application, which allowed people to track their feelings using a scale rating of 1 to 10. When the number entered was 8 or higher, red was displayed, which signaled that the person should seek help from a mental health professional. If someone’s mental health continued a downward course over several days, the names and numbers of a variety of professionals appeared on the screen. I am very proud of this accomplishment, as it was a way of giving back to those facing mental health problems, which so often go ignored. By being innovative and creative using coding, I know I will be able to create life-changing applications in the future. I have a strong desire to grow as a student and look forward to turning my childhood fascination into a career that can potentially improve the lives of others. By pursuing a degree in Computer Science and learning how to code in multiple languages, I believe that I can develop applications to improve people’s quality of life. To cultivate this passion and enhance my current knowledge I plan to attend seminars, read books, practice new skills, and seek out hands-on experience opportunities that can further enhance my knowledge and abilities. I also plan on staying abreast of the latest technologies to keep my skills fresh in an ever-changing industry. When I was younger, I used to make the same mistakes repeatedly. I did not make attempts to correct my mistakes. When I would fail, I would not practice and perfect my errors or processes, and instead would cry in self-misery. One day, my mother bought several self-improvement books and I began reading them. Now I take steps to improve in areas that I am not strong in. When I make a mistake, I figure out what went wrong and practice, study, consult more knowledgeable people for help and repeat all over. What makes me unique is that I am always finding ways to improve. I am always looking for ways to improve my grades, my friendships, my cheerleading craft, and my participation in community service. My compassion for others and my desire to help make other people’s lives better through service are what make me most unique. You can encounter service in many unexpected ways. During freshman year, I thought of service as something that was just a requirement. I just wanted to complete it. That was until we were back in person, and I got to interact with the less fortunate. I go to Baltimore with the SALT ministry on Sundays and serve breakfast to people at the addiction center. Doing such a small act of service goes a long way for people. One day, on a cold morning, a woman said, “Thank you for coming down here, it means a lot to me when you guys do this. It makes my week.” This simple statement changed my whole narrative on service. After hearing this kind of woman's words, I immediately felt a sense of happiness and motivation to continue this work. Throughout time as I kept traveling to Baltimore on the weekends, she recognized me, and I found comfort in our familiar bond. I was a part of making someone’s life better and that was so meaningful. I was no longer thinking about the requirement while participating in the service. Instead, I wanted to do it for the joy it brought me and others. But not only did this experience spark a passion in me to help others, but it taught me different views on judgment. Seeing and helping those in need opened my mind to others’ experiences and instilled in me not to make assumptions based on one’s background. Service also gives us a form of enlightenment because we can sympathize with the people we are serving. It makes us feel better to help those in need while also serving. My biggest takeaway is to go into service with an open mind and a heart of happiness. One little act goes a long way! In conclusion, I am unique because I am always looking for ways to improve myself. I have strong compassion for others and want to do my part to serve whenever possible. This is what brings me joy. I plan to continue my community service through college and beyond. I will continue to assist the elderly, people with disabilities, and the homeless. I plan on mentoring underprivileged children and developing applications that will enrich their lives for the better. I am proud to have grown into someone who is accepting, strong, and compassionate. My ability to exhibit leadership and advocacy for others is what truly makes me unique.

It was a bitterly cold day in January, as I sat in the back seat of one of the volunteer’s cars, nervous and reluctant knowing that I would be spending the day with brand-new people in an unfamiliar place. After hearing this kind of woman's words, I immediately felt a sense of happiness and motivation to continue this work. Soon thereafter, I became involved in even more service opportunities such as assisting the elderly and providing entertainment to children of impoverished families and looked forward to assisting and donating my time. Eventually, I continued to serve even after my service hour quota was met. People struggle every day with not having enough money to feed themselves or mental health issues and often we don’t know their story from afar. However, if we could all be more compassionate and show kindness to those we do not know, the world might become more united. Service has shifted from an obligation to become a passion of mine and it is essential to who I am. Regardless of what the future holds, I would love to continue to help those around me and make an impact on the surrounding community wherever that community may be. After seeing the lives of those in underprivileged communities, I was able to inspire my friends by telling them about my story of initial fear and anxiety and how it turned into a passion for helping others. Now I have a team of friends who attend my weekly feeding of the homeless in Baltimore.

My passion for STEM began because I have been fascinated with computers since I was a young child, and this fascination continues to this day. I recall using my mother's laptop when I was young and quickly learned how to navigate it with her assistance. I have taken a Python class with an organization called Black Girls Code and was part of a team that developed a Mental Health application with this same organization. This application was developed as a way to give back to those facing mental health problems, which so often go ignored. The application allowed people to track their feelings using a scale rating of 1 to 10. When the number entered was 8 or higher, the color red was displayed, which signaled that the person should seek help from a mental health professional. The names and numbers of a variety of professionals appeared on the screen when a person's mental health continued on a downward course over several days. I also took a Computer Science course and created two JavaScript applications. It was challenging, but I enjoyed learning the concepts and using my imagination to design applications that solve real problems. Being able to write code is a valuable skill, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue learning and building upon my current knowledge. I was interested in learning the inner workings of a machine and quickly learned how to install software and connect devices and printers to a network. I am also the go-to person for all of my friends when they have computer problems. I have become very skilled at troubleshooting and resolving issues. My mother was also a STEM major and was instrumental in exposing me to different opportunities. I am very grateful for this exposure and encouragement and quickly learned that this was a field that I wanted to pursue. By pursuing a degree in Computer Science and learning how to code, I believe that developing applications can improve the quality of life for people. I have a strong desire to grow as a student and look forward to turning my childhood fascination into a career that can potentially improve the lives of others. Therefore after receiving my degree, my dream job is to become a Software Developer. I am the best candidate for this scholarship because I will use my knowledge to mentor and encourage the younger generation to pursue this field. In addition, I will use my skills to write applications to improve the lives of others. I am a very hard worker and have the dedication and determination to make a positive impact on society and the world.

After seeing the lives of those in underprivileged communities, I know I could serve and help these people through a career in medicine. Many people who are in poverty do not have access to medical care and I would love to be able to provide them with the level of care they deserve.

My father is a Veteran of the United States Army. Growing up, I saw him work very hard to serve our country. He taught me many good qualities including having integrity, being punctual, serving my community, and being loyal and reliable. I used the values that he taught me to shape into the person that I am. Out of all of the qualities that I learned from him, the best one is to be more compassionate and show kindness to those we do not know. If we all exhibit compassion towards others, the world might become more united as one.

My name is Melania Outlaw and I am currently a senior at Mount Desales Academy. I went to Trinity school in elementary and Middle school. I am kind, giving, and very social, and love helping others who are not as fortunate as myself. I am currently a cheerleader at Mount Desales. Although Mount Desales is an all-girls school, we cheer for our brother school’s football team. Before Trinity, I went to a school another private school that was not as loving and accepting. After transferring to Trinity, I immediately felt love and acceptance as I walked onto campus. Independently of service, my desire to include others from different backgrounds has made its way into my personal life. My educational goals include my desire to major in Computer Science. This scholarship will help by allowing me to focus on studying and doing well in my classes as opposed to the need to work. The money will help me greatly with tuition. I would like to continue to also spend any free that I have continuing to help those in my community. I would like to be remembered for the impact and change that I made to the world. I desire to continue to develop applications that will positively impact the lives of others. I would also like to be known as a kind and compassionate person who accepted and respected all people regardless of their social status.
