Patty Timmons Women's Healthcare Scholarship
I am a mother of 3. I have decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in nursing. In my previous career as a teacher I have seen how unions can help advance policy. I plan to use my nursing degree to help advocate for women's healthcare. Women's healthcare does not take a priority in this country, and too many issues could be solved by taking a more serious stand. Maternity and postnatal care of the mother is paramount in the measure of our nation's well-being. Too many women are forced to go back to work before they have even had a chance to heal and bond with their child. This leads to post-birth complications and behavior problems down the line.
Improving maternity leave policies is essential to ensure mothers have the time they need to recover and establish a strong bond with their newborns. Providing adequate support during this critical period can significantly reduce health issues for both mother and child. Additionally, access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including regular screenings and preventive care, is vital for early detection and treatment of potential health problems.
In my own personal experience, I lost out on a significant amount of pay due to bed rest and recovery with the pregnancy and birth of my twins in 2008. After 6 weeks of bed rest and their premature birth, I was fortunate enough to have some sick time donated to me by coworkers but still lost out on 50 days' worth of pay or 10 weeks of pay. It was a hardship that we were able to eventually overcome. Many cannot due to their circumstances. I will use my role as a nurse to help advance women's maternity rights to include paid leave for situations such as mine.
Education and awareness are also key components in advocating for women's healthcare. By educating the public and healthcare professionals about the unique health needs of women, we can foster a more supportive environment that prioritizes their well-being. This includes addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, particularly for marginalized communities.
In conclusion, by leveraging my nursing degree, I aim to be a strong advb vocate for women's healthcare. Ensuring that women receive the care and support they need during and after pregnancy is crucial for the overall health of our society. By pushing for better policies, increased awareness, and equitable access to healthcare, we can make significant strides in improving the lives of women and their families.
