I wake up; it is a cold brisk morning; I hear the birds chirping outside. I walk downstairs and crack open a new cold can of Yerba Mate, and just like the can says, "I come to life." I drink Guayaki Yerba Mate not only because it tastes good but because our values are in line. The brand of mate that I drink is, Guayaki. They are a certified B-crop brand, which means they are transparent about their social and environmental performance. Many bigger businesses do much more harm to the environment than most know. This is meaningful to me because taking care of the earth for future generations is very important, which is why I want to major in environmental studies. So the planet can still be beautiful and habitable for many years. Next year I plan on going to Maine Maritime Academy and majoring in their Coastal and Marine Environmental Science program. Here I will learn valuable skills from their hands-on teaching style and with their access to the ocean, I can get valuable skills that I can’t find anywhere else. This will prepare me to go into the workforce after graduation and will launch me ahead of my competition who weren't able to have that experience. After graduation, I plan on becoming a field researcher. With my research, I will learn how humans interact with the coastline and animals. A couple of issues I hope to help with are, eroding coastlines, the destruction of habitats, and the overexploitation of fish and resources. If we don't prioritize these problems we could lose the ocean and coastal life as we know it. This is important because lots of communities rely on the ocean. For example, in Maine, a lot of people are lobster fishermen and their income relies on if they can catch enough lobsters. With ocean temperatures rising the lobsters are going into deeper and colder waters. This made it harder for lots of fishermen to make money and many coastal towns have suffered because of it. This also caused the prices to skyrocket, causing many Mainers to not be able to afford lobsters. If we don't fix this problem and other ones like it, it could destroy many coastal towns. For those reasons and many more that's why I care about protecting our oceans and how becoming a researcher will help me do so. Thank you for taking the time to read my essay and considering me for this scholarship.
