As long as I can remember, showing weakness was my biggest enemy. Anytime I was kicked on the soccer field or fought with a friend, I never cried, and I never showed anyone they had hurt me. I wasn’t fearful of showing emotion, but I believed that I was stronger than anything that could harm me. No matter the challenge, I faced the pain head on. I could’ve never imagined then that a moment could change my entire world in a mere millisecond. At the age of fourteen, my sixteen year old brother, Marcus, was killed in a car accident on his way to hockey practice. My world collapsed. Marcus and I only 15 months apart were inseparable, everywhere one of us was the other was never far behind. After losing Marcus my sense of control over my life diminished. There was a constant ache filling my body and everything around me was a painful reminder of what I had lost. "One time..." and "Remember whens..." became the only ways I could talk because I no longer had a present with him to hold onto. Even though I wasn't ready to move forward, the world kept spinning, and I had to learn to continue on with it. Grief is a pain that lingers, but to find new hope in the darkest days, I had to find a light. For me that light was perseverance. As much as I wish every minute of everyday that I could give Marcus a hug, I know that he is always watching over me. Losing him taught me my greatest lesson in life, that vulnerability can co-exist with courage. Strength isn’t about being indestructible; it is about continuing even when you feel shattered inside. When continuing to tomorrow feels impossible, resilience means finding the strength to fight for today. I have adopted this new outlook on all aspects of life. Personally, I've formed deeper connections with the people around me; I made many new friends, and found myself much closer to my family. I’ve also found myself to be much more outgoing and involved within the community. Academically I've worked harder than ever, striving for success as well as not being afraid of mistakes. Missing so much school after the accident had a large toll among my grades, rebuilding my focus and motivation taught me that growth comes from perseverance, not perfection. This journey through loss planted the seed for my future. Experiencing grief firsthand, showed me the tremendous impact that compassion, care, and human connection can have in someones darkest moments. The unexpected loss of my brother, who was the goofiest, lively, teenage boy reminded me just how vulnerable we are as humans, and it opened my eyes to the importance of helping others heal. That is what ultimately inspired me to pursue nursing. I want to be the person who brings an ounce of comfort on someone's worst day. The person who goes above and beyond to offer reassurance and kindness. I want to be the reason a patient and their familes feel seen, supported, and hopeful in the moments they need it most.

My motivation to pursue a career in nursing is rooted in a deeply personal journey shaped by repeated encounters with the healthcare system. My first exposure to a hospital was far from positive. When I was five, my grandmother was diagnosed with Wegener's disease. Her illness meant constant hospitalizations, rotating in-home nurses, and long stretches of uncertainty. Eventually, she entered hospice care and passed away in 2016. At such a young age, I had come to associate hospitals with fear and loss; walking through those doors meant something serious, something heartbreaking was happening. However, not long after my perspective began to shift. When my younger siblings were born it brought an entirely different light to the hospitals. It became a place filled with hope, new beginnings, and family. Seeing nurses care for my mom, place me on the bed with her and put my new baby brother in my arms made me realize hospitals were also a place of miracles. In the years since, I have experienced several personal losses, each reminding me how vulnerable we are as humans. Seeing the fear in the eyes of those I love entering the healthcare setting made me want to become the person who brings comfort on someone's hardest day. The person who will go above and beyond to offer reassurance and kindness. I want to be the reason a patient feels seen, supported, and hopeful in the moments they need it most. My academic experiences have further strengthened my motivation to pursue nursing. The human body fascinates me; how every system works together, how even the slightest imbalance can have overall effects on someone's health, and how much there is to still learn. Taking Honors Human Anatomy & Physiology deepened my interest in the mechanics of the body, and my EMT class allowed me to apply that knowledge with real-world, hands-on scenarios. Something as simple as taking vitals, tracing blood flow through the heart or even analyzing case studies excites me! These classes confirmed that working in healthcare is where I am most driven, empathetic, and curious. As a nurse I want to combine my compassion with knowledge, where I can provide excellent care but also a comforting presence for patients and their families. Whether it's easing someone's fears, advocating for their needs, or simply being a friendly steady presence in a time of uncertainty, I want to make a meaningful impact on my community. Ultimately, I want to be a nurse who treats illness, but who also brings a little bit of joy to everyone I treat.
