Dr. Monique Dupree Scholarship for BIPOC Students
As I sit with the recurring memory of a heavy heart being told about the passing of my grandpa in 2016, I have given deep thought and reflection of my journey thus far as a rising Senior at Hampton University. A pivotal moment in my decision on choosing a profession came to be by the motivation of grief. Despite dealing with the emotional weight of my grandfather's constant battle with cardiovascular disease and diabetes, I witnessed how physical therapy really helped him as he adjusted to life as a new amputee. Even with everything he was going through, the therapists didn’t treat him like he was limited to his unfortunate circumstance as they supported him in getting his independence back. This experience was the drive that directed my focus toward the field of physical therapy while reinforcing my passion for care and service. Despite the morbid circumstances, the positive impact of physical therapy on my grandfather resonated deeply with me and reinforced my calling to help others through this field in similar situations. From a holistic standpoint, a significant source of my motivation stems from a deep desire to give back to the community that supported me during times of need, despite limited resources. My maternal grandparents live in a rural area of Williamston, North Carolina, where access to healthcare is scarce. Witnessing this disparity firsthand has inspired me to address the inequities in rural healthcare. In the near future, I plan to launch a research project focused on healthcare disparities in underserved rural areas, serving as a foundation for establishing a nonprofit private practice after completing my doctorate and gaining valuable experience in the field of physical therapy. As an active seeker of new and unique service initiatives, I developed a deep love for service, which later inspired me to incorporate it into both my daily life and future career where I will be given the opportunity to form meaningful connections and learn from individual experiences. Ultimately my goal is to bridge the healthcare gap in these communities by providing essential services to those who need them most. In preparation for my future career, I have gained valuable hands on experience through leadership roles, shadowing, and service, all of which have reinforced my passion for physical therapy. While shadowing a physical therapist at a local hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, I had the opportunity to work in an outpatient clinic, where I gained first hand exposure to orthopedic care and patient rehabilitation. In the summers of 2024 and 2025, I was fortunate to be admitted into the Summer Internship Program which further expanded my understanding of healthcare and professional development. For me, physical therapy goes beyond an interest in exercise, movement, and biomechanics, it represents a commitment to reestablishing hope and healing to individuals facing challenges similar to those my loved ones have endured.I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and I believe this scholarship will serve as a pivotal stepping stone in my pursuit of excellence in the field of physical therapy.
