My mother is African American and my father is Guyanese, so I am influenced by both cultures. With a background like mine, diversity was my norm and I understood the world to be a melting pot. As time progressed, I became privy to the injustices of our humanity. It can be discouraging, but I endeavor to be a vessel for unity through love and fellowship with my community, both local and global. My interest in global outreach began in my early childhood. My father was in the Air Force and we toured Germany, Japan, and Turkey; so I was overseas from age three to twelve. Coming to America was like entering a new world; I had serious culture shock! Since being in the U.S., my mother, brother, and I have maintained our global connections. Last year, we launched our nonprofit organization called Shalom Ministry. We seek to help those in need, regardless of the need, in the name of Jesus Christ. Our roots date back to 2018 when my mother visited Ghana with only the intention to vacation. By the end of her visit, though, she had supported family businesses and committed to funding a parish and the construction of an elementary school. It has been more than a blessing to bless others and see real lives impacted! While being an active member in Shalom Ministry, I am also a part-time student in the University of Miami’s BSN-DNP program from which I will graduate in 2026. I started my nursing career in Virginia in 2018 on an Intermediate Care Unit that specialized in cardiac telemetry and stroke care. After two years there, I transferred to the ICU. A year later, I relocated to Florida and started travel nursing. My experience as a nurse has affirmed the characteristics God gave me, and He continues showing Himself through my occupation. To be the light of Christ is my life’s mission and nursing is such a special way to do that. At the age of two, God planted the desire in my heart to become a nurse. To see His plan come to fruition is more than amazing, and I know this is only the beginning. My next foreseeable step is to have my own practice as a Nurse Practioner. I will serve the underserved, specifically those who do not have health insurance. My prayer is that my practice will have national and international reach. The vision is much greater than I can articulate, but what I can say is that everything I do is for and unto the Lord. Since God’s heart is for people, mine is too and I live every day seeking to serve them as He intended. As I am actively pursuing higher education, I need financial assistance. This scholarship will not only help fund my college career but will also enable me to focus wholeheartedly on my education so that I am prepared to apply it. I’m confident that God is doing His part, so I’m doing mine by applying for the assistance I am in great need of. How does one become inspired? Sometimes by thought-provoking media, by a probing poem or song, sometimes while meditating on solutions to global issues, or while practicing mindfulness and appreciating the present. Contrarily, how does a two-year-old become inspired? With a blank canvas for a mind and the freedom from the constraints of responsibility and expectation, a toddler is able to run wild with their imagination. God is the creator of imagination and imagination is the breeding ground for inspiration. When I was two years old, God planted the seed of nursing into the ground of my imagination. Since then, that seed has been watered and nurtured, and it has blossomed into the fullness of living out my God-given calling as a nurse. I began my nursing career in 2018 after graduating with my BSN. I have worked on a number of units from Medical-Surgical to specialty Intensive Care Units. No matter the acuity of the patient, I have learned that healing starts with the soul. I make every effort to discover my patients’ cares and concerns, prioritize finding solutions, and then work toward their physical healing so that holistic healing can be achieved. I believe that my service as a caregiver not only brings healing from Heaven but also humility and empathy, which is a by-product of the challenges I encounter through my work. As a bedside nurse, I have learned that illness and disease interrupt peoples’ lives in devastating ways. So it is imperative that I remember to practice empathy because, like sickness, I may also pose as an interruption. I regularly realign myself to the principles of empathy because without doing so, it is easy to act insensitively and respond harshly in the face of anger or hostility. Empathy helps me create an atmosphere of peace, allowing patients to feel at ease which promotes rest and healing. Being a resource for holistic healing is what propels me to advance my practice by becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. I aim to bring health care to those who are underserved and underrepresented, particularly to the low- and middle-class, Black Americans, and Latinos. As I advance my career, I will continue standing on the foundation of empathy. While caring for the sick and offering resources to those who need them most, I will replicate the compassion and kindness Jesus shows us. With these attributes, Jesus was able to reach people of all backgrounds and cultures; and I endeavor to do the same. I hope to influence the healthcare system so that it acts as a bridge for people to easily cross. Currently, there are so many barriers in healthcare that its exclusivity creates a gate instead of a bridge, keeping people from accessing the care they need and deserve. Our right to life, health, and well-being is directly related to our access to health care. Therefore, my goal is to make health care as accessible as possible. By adhering to my pillars which are giving abundantly, serving graciously, and loving unconditionally, I hope to be an answered prayer to my community like Jesus was to the earth.
