Heart of Service Scholarship – In Memory of Officer Katelyn Tully
I have always been a giver. I am happiest when I am helping others, and will always seek people in need to assist in whatever way I can. I demonstrate this through extensive community service commitments, all driven by my desire to make a difference in someone's life.
Officer Tully is a role model for students like me. Her dedication to empathy, kindness, service, and leadership are all traits that everyone should strive to emulate. I believe success is defined by one's character, not their grades or test scores. Officer Tully embodies this success, and I will try my hardest through the rest of my life to achieve these qualities that made her so impactful on the Merrimack Valley community.
Last year, I had the pleasure of working on a project with SkillsUSA and The Clean River Project to raise money for a new trash containment boom. With a team of other students, I developed a conveyor system to help make trash collection easier. This was designed to reduce the physical burden of trash collection, making it safer and more efficient. By keeping the river clean, thousands of Massachusetts residents have a reliable source of drinking water.
I also wish to nurture the abilities of younger generations. For the past two years, I have been participating in the Haverhill Book Buddies Program. Nothing brings me more joy than getting to make a difference in the life of a young student, and giving them both a creative outlet and responsive pen-pal. I have always loved learning, and want nothing more than to inspire that same love in the next generation of students.
I also serve as the Whittier Tech CAD Drafting Freshman Liaison. I work to get incoming freshmen excited about my shop, and guide them through projects, demonstrations, and anything else that they may need help with during their exploratory experience. I want to make my shop a safe space for all, as well as a place where young professionals develop their skills. Even after exploratory is over, I make a consistent effort to support the underclassmen, and even other seniors that may need assistance.
I plan to attend UMass Lowell with a major in Plastics Engineering and a minor in STEM Teaching. My teachers have changed my life, and I want nothing more than to do the same. I know how it feels to be the quiet kid that won't advocate for herself, and how important it is to have a teacher that will push you to improve and come out of your shell. I hope that some day, I'll be able to impact a student in the ways my teachers have impacted me.
If I do not go into teaching, I want to use Plastics Engineering to make the world a safer place for the incoming generations to live in. By focusing on sustainability and service, developments in plastics can benefit everyone. If I can impact someone personally through teaching, or through a product that I engineer, I will feel complete.
