My name is Maya Khoury, and I am currently a first-year nursing student at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Nursing has always been more than just a career goal for me, it’s a calling that has grown from a deep-rooted desire to care for others. As the oldest child in my family, I naturally took on the role of caregiver from a young age. Whether it was helping my younger siblings with daily routines, supporting family members through challenges, or simply being the person others could rely on, I developed a strong sense of responsibility and compassion early on. These qualities have shaped who I am and have fueled my decision to pursue a career in nursing.
One of the reasons I am so passionate about nursing is the unique opportunity it provides to make a real and lasting impact on people's lives. Nurses are often the first point of contact, the strongest advocates, and the steady presence during some of the most vulnerable moments in a patient’s life. I want to be that source of strength and support. My ultimate goal is to specialize in critical care nursing, working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after graduation. I am drawn to the complexity and urgency of the ICU, where quick thinking and advanced clinical skills can make all the difference. I believe working in this setting will challenge me and help me grow into a well-rounded and highly skilled nurse.
After gaining experience and financial stability in the ICU, I plan to further my education by applying to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) program, potentially at the University of Tennessee. Becoming a CRNA has been a long-term goal of mine because it combines advanced knowledge, technical precision, and direct patient care in a highly specialized field. I’m excited by the challenge and responsibility it involves.
To prepare for this journey, I began building a foundation early. While still in high school, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and shortly after earning my certification, I started working in a skilled long-term care facility. That experience gave me valuable hands-on experience and helped me develop communication, time management, and patient care skills. It also confirmed that nursing was the right path for me.
While I am only in the beginning of my journey as a Registered Nurse, I am fully committed to the challenging road ahead and all the obstacles it brings.
