From a young age, I was drawn to professions centered on care and compassion. Growing up, I witnessed my mother, a caregiver for elderly patients, providing not just physical assistance but also emotional support to individuals in their most vulnerable moments. Her dedication and empathy left an indelible mark on me, shaping my perspective on what it means to truly serve others. However, my path to nursing was not a direct one; it was forged through life experiences that gradually illuminated my calling.
For eight years, I worked as a pediatric dental assistant, a role that allowed me to combine my passion for working with children and my interest in healthcare. During this time, I developed skills in patient communication, particularly with anxious or fearful children, and cultivated a deep appreciation for the trust families place in healthcare providers. I loved being part of a team that could transform a potentially frightening experience into one of comfort and care. Yet, I felt a yearning to have a broader impact—to care for the whole person, not just a specific aspect of their health.
Initially, I pursued a degree with the intention of applying to dental school, believing that becoming a dentist would fulfill my aspirations. However, after not being accepted, I took a step back to reevaluate my goals. This moment of disappointment turned out to be a pivotal point in my journey. It led me to reflect on what I truly valued: forming meaningful connections with patients, addressing their needs holistically, and being present in moments of both joy and vulnerability. These reflections guided me to nursing, a profession that embodies all of these values and more.
My decision to pursue nursing was solidified during a personal experience that underscored the critical role nurses play in healthcare. When my grandmother battled cancer, she received extraordinary care from her nursing team. They were not only skilled clinicians but also compassionate advocates who supported her and our family through every stage of her illness. Watching their dedication inspired me to envision myself in their role, providing the same level of care and comfort to others.
As I began nursing school at AdventHealth University, I quickly realized that I had found my true calling. Through clinical experiences, I have developed a passion for pediatrics and labor and delivery nursing, areas where I can combine my love for working with children and families with my desire to support patients during transformative life events. I find immense fulfillment in being an advocate, educator, and source of strength for my patients.
Beyond the technical and scientific aspects of nursing, what excites me most is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Nursing is a unique profession that requires both a sharp mind and a compassionate heart. It is a career that challenges you to think critically, adapt quickly, and empathize deeply. I am inspired by the resilience of the human spirit and the privilege of being a part of someone’s healing journey.
My journey to nursing has been shaped by both triumphs and challenges, and each step has reinforced my commitment to this path. I'm eager to bring my experiences, skills, and passion to a field where I can make a lasting impact. With the knowledge and training I am gaining, I look forward to a career that allows me to embody the principles of care, compassion, and excellence every day. This scholarship would enable me to focus on my education and further my goal of becoming a nurse who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients and their families
Joseph Joshua Searor Memorial Scholarship
My journey to nursing has been full of twists and turns, each step teaching me something about myself and what I value most in a career. For eight years, I worked as a pediatric dental assistant, a role that brought me immense joy. I loved helping children feel at ease in the dental chair, educating families on the importance of oral health, and making a positive impact on their lives. My experiences in pediatric dentistry inspired me to pursue a biology degree with the goal of attending dental school.
After earning my degree, I applied to dental school with high hopes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t accepted, and while this was a deeply disappointing moment, it also became a turning point. I spent time reflecting on my skills, interests, and the parts of my dental career I loved most. While I missed working in dentistry, I realized my passion extended beyond oral health—it was rooted in my desire to build relationships with patients, provide care that improves their overall well-being, and support them through vulnerable moments. This reflection led me to explore other healthcare careers, and I discovered nursing.
Nursing stood out to me because of its holistic approach to care and the wide range of opportunities to connect with and support patients. My “aha” moment came during a shadowing experience in labor and delivery, where I witnessed a nurse skillfully balance technical expertise with emotional support for a mother in labor. That moment confirmed for me that nursing was where I belonged, allowing me to combine my compassion, clinical skills, and dedication to helping others.
Although I am fully committed to becoming a nurse and am excited about the possibilities in pediatrics and labor and delivery, I still miss the world of dentistry. I often think about the impact I made in my eight years as a pediatric dental assistant and wonder if I might return to it someday. The thought of applying to dental school again later in life remains in the back of my mind. However, I see this as an opportunity rather than a limitation. My nursing education is giving me a strong foundation in patient care, and I believe that these skills would enhance any future career path I choose.
Returning to school has been a challenging but rewarding experience. It has reignited my passion for healthcare and shown me that no matter where life leads, I am committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Saswati Gupta Cancer Research Scholarship
My ultimate career goal is to become a compassionate and skilled nurse specializing in pediatrics or labor and delivery. These fields hold a special place in my heart because they allow me to support families during transformative moments—whether welcoming a new life into the world or caring for a child’s health and well-being. I aspire to provide high-quality, patient-centered care that not only meets medical needs but also creates an atmosphere of trust, comfort, and empowerment for the families I serve.
In the short term, I plan to build a strong foundation as a bedside nurse, gaining experience and expertise in maternal and child health. To deepen my skills, I aim to pursue advanced certifications such as Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) or Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB). These certifications will equip me to provide the best care possible while staying updated on evidence-based practices in my specialty.
In addition to clinical practice, I hope to make a broader impact by advocating for health equity. My goal is to address disparities in healthcare access, particularly for underserved families, by participating in community outreach programs focused on prenatal education and pediatric wellness. I believe that empowering families with knowledge and resources is key to improving outcomes and creating lasting change.
Long term, I aspire to mentor future nurses and contribute to shaping a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system. By combining my passion for pediatrics and labor and delivery with a commitment to lifelong learning and advocacy, I hope to leave a meaningful mark on the field of nursing.
She Rose in Health Equity
Health equity is not just a goal; it is a moral imperative that drives my passion for nursing. As a nursing student at AdventHealth University, I am committed to addressing systemic barriers that create health disparities, particularly in pediatrics and labor and delivery. My goal is to ensure that every child and mother, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to high-quality, compassionate care.
Currently, I am gaining clinical experience in pediatrics, which has deepened my understanding of the unique challenges faced by underserved families. I see the critical need for culturally competent care, early interventions, and education to empower families to navigate the healthcare system. Whether teaching parents about preventative care or supporting children with chronic illnesses, I aim to be a source of knowledge and advocacy.
This scholarship will allow me to further my education and enhance my ability to serve vulnerable populations. It will support my goal of pursuing certifications and training in maternal and child health, equipping me with the skills to address the complex needs of these groups. Additionally, it will provide resources to continue volunteering in community outreach programs that focus on pediatric wellness.
To drive meaningful change in health equity, I plan to take several specific actions. First, I will advocate for inclusive policies that address social determinants of health, such as access to nutritious food, safe housing, and quality education. Second, I will actively seek opportunities to mentor and educate families in underserved communities, empowering them to prioritize their health and well-being. Lastly, I will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop initiatives that improve outcomes in labor and delivery and pediatric care, ensuring every patient receives the best start in life.
Through this scholarship, I will be better equipped to transform my passion for nursing into actionable change, creating a future where health equity is not just an ideal but a reality.
