Bio

My name is Matthew Ohenhen, and I’m a freshman at the University of North Texas majoring in Business Analytics with a minor in Finance. I’m passionate about growth in knowledge, fitness, and character. Raised by a single mother, I learned early on how to stay focused, work hard, and carry responsibility with pride. The gym taught me discipline. Business gave me purpose. I’ve always been interested in how ideas turn into action, how numbers can guide success, and how smart planning can create real change. I chose Business Analytics because I want to make data and decision-making more accessible to small and minority-owned businesses. I want to use my education to help others manage their growth, finances, and future. One day, I hope to start a business that offers affordable analytics and financial tools to local entrepreneurs. I also want to teach young people in my community about business and money topics many of us never had the chance to learn. I believe knowledge should be shared, not kept. To me, college isn’t just about earning a degree. It’s about creating a path forward for myself and helping others believe they can do the same. I’m committed to using everything I learn to lift others up and make a lasting impact.

From a young age, I understood that life wasn't easy. My family has always struggled with money, but my parents worked super hard to take care of my siblings and me. As a Nigerian immigrant, I've watched my mom and dad work day and night to give us a better future. Money has always been tight. Now, as I get ready for college, I realize that my biggest challenge isn't my dedication or my dreams—it's not having enough money. I've always dreamed of going to Texas State. Its beautiful campus, great dorms, and amazing exercise science program make it the perfect school for me. More than anything, I want to earn a degree in exercise science so I can use fitness to help others become stronger in body and mind. But my family doesn't have much money, which makes this dream seem far away. FAFSA didn't give me any help, and my parents, who barely make enough to pay the bills, can't afford college costs. Without more financial help, I'm worried I won't be able to continue my education. Things at home have gotten even harder lately. My mother had a really bad surgery that left her stuck in bed and unable to work. My father works all the time but gets paid less now because his company let many people go. With these problems, I've had to help support my family. I've worked throughout high school to help out, even giving up track after ninth grade to focus on my job. While I don't mind helping my family, it has made getting to college much harder. Despite all these challenges, my greatest achievement has been never giving up on my education and finding my voice through AVID, a program that changed my life completely. When I first joined, I was shy and didn't believe in myself. My AVID teacher saw something special in me and pushed me to try new things. Through this program, I learned how to talk better with others, lead group talks, and speak in front of my classmates. This program didn't just help me do better in school—it helped me grow as a leader. Now, I even lead small groups at my church, using my voice to encourage others. This achievement taught me that I am stronger than I thought. I learned that I can overcome shyness and fear when I have people who believe in me. I discovered that my voice matters and that I can use it to help others. Most importantly, I learned that hardships don't define me—how I respond to them does. Losing my uncle during sophomore year made me even more determined to follow my dreams. He was one of my biggest supporters, always taking me to the gym and reminding me of how strong I was. When he passed away, I found healing through fitness, using it to help with my sadness. His belief in me inspired me to want to help others find their strength, both in body and mind. That's why I want to study exercise science and why going to Texas State means so much to me. In the future, I hope to become a fitness trainer who helps people not just with their physical strength, but with their mental health too. I want to create programs for kids and teens who face challenges like I did, showing them that exercise can be a way to deal with stress and sadness. I dream of opening a community gym where anyone can come, regardless of how much money they have. I also hope to be the first person in my family to finish college, setting an example for my younger siblings and other Nigerian immigrant kids who might not think college is possible for them. This scholarship would change everything for me. It would make my family's money problems lighter and let me focus on school instead of worrying about how to pay for college. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to reaching my dream—helping others find confidence, strength, and hope, just like my uncle once helped me.

Ï wonder how it feels to be Strong¨ "I wonder how it feels to be Strong." Hajime no Ippo by George Morikawa first serialized in 1993, is easily one of the best and most encapsulating pieces of literature I have ever read. Hajime no Ippo is a story about Makunouchi Ippo, a high school student with a heart of gold. Sadly, Ippo lacks confidence in himself, which leads him to get bullied. He's also unable to make friends because he needs to support his single mother in his family fishing business. While getting ganged up by his bullies, the man amongst men, the only Mamoru Takamura, Heavyweight Champion of Japan, steps in and saves Ippo from his aggressors. Takamura brings Ippo to his boxing gym and welcomes him into the boxing world by teaching him how to throw a proper punch. Ippo confesses that he doesn't think he can change from how he is now.Takamura tells the young man that Mike Tyson was once just like him, but when bullies attacked a pigeon of his, he joined a boxing gym to defend himself. Now filled with curiosity about what he could become, Ippo wonders if he could become "reborn" like Mike Tyson and ponders, "I wonder how it feels to be Strong." Hajime no Ippo is more than just boxing to me and countless others. It's about the tribulations of cutting weight, the feeling of success and virtue, gratitude for something you love, the despair of failure, and the want to become somebody you have always wanted to be. While reading Hajime no Ippo, l felt a solid connection to Makunouchi Ippo; we both came from single parents, dealt with bullies, lacked friends, lacked confidence, and, most importantly, wanted to change.Though he is a piece of fiction, I felt he was speaking to me, not literally talking to me, but saying to me through his actions, "you can do it too!" I was already through my journey of fitness while reading. However, this manga made me want to go at it more passionately than before. Then, on March 11, 2022, tragedy struck my life - I found out that I had spondylolisthesis, a slipped spinal disc, and that I would be unable to deadlift or squat, two of the most crucial movements inbodybuilding. I had to do months of physical therapy and could not work out for months. The only feeling I could feel during that time was loss, similar to how you would feel after losing a fight after you've put hours, days, months, and years into winning.Countless nights, I couldn't sleep, shaking, just thinking about how I would never be to do what I wanted to do. It felt like I was grieving.  I remember cursing at the world, asking for an answer behind my suffering with no explanation. Then, Makunouichi Ippo lost his bout against Japanese Lightweight Champion Date Eiji. He felt the same things I did, the pain of loss, months of hard work just to lose. He wasn't alone, and realizing that made me realize that I wasn't either. Without this piece of fiction, and especially this Makunouchi Ippo, I probably would have never gone near a gym again. Seeing him as a vision of what I could become changed my outlook on life, and as he got ready to fight again, I did the same.Hajime no Ippo isn't a story about boxers - It's about people who want to become something they've dreamt of. It could be a love letter to boxing, a thrilling piece of entertainment, or a message to get up from the darkness and rise higher than you've ever had. To quote Ippo's coach in the manga,"The moment you back down is the moment you lose."

Growing up as part of a Nigerian family in the United States has shaped who I am in many ways. My family faced a lot of challenges when we moved here, but those struggles taught me the value of hard work, determination, and never giving up. These lessons from my family have helped me make a difference in my community and shaped my goals for the future. When we first came to America, life was not easy. My parents left everything behind in Nigeria to give us a better life. They worked long hours at tough jobs so we could have food and a place to live. Watching them sacrifice so much taught me to work hard and always try my best, even when things seem impossible. Adjusting to a new culture was also hard for my family. At school, I was teased because of my accent and the Nigerian food I brought for lunch. At first, it hurt, but over time I learned to be proud of my heritage. I realized that being different is what makes me unique, and I now see my culture as a strength. These experiences have inspired me to help others. I coach kids at my church about the word of God, teaching them to stay strong and believe in themselves. It brings me joy to help them see that faith and hard work can help them get through tough times. I also encourage them to be proud of who they are, just like I learned to be proud of where I come from. My cultural background has also shaped my love for learning and my passion for STEM. In Nigerian culture, education is seen as a key to success, and my family always encouraged me to do well in school. I want to use my education to make a difference in the world, just as my parents’ sacrifices made a difference in my life. Receiving the Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji Legacy Scholarship would mean so much to me. It would help me continue my education and pursue a career in STEM. I want to become an engineer and use my skills to solve problems and create solutions that help people. This scholarship would ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus on my studies and goals. My experiences as a first-generation African immigrant have taught me resilience, the value of community, and the importance of giving back. I hope to inspire others in my community and beyond to work hard, believe in themselves, and never give up. With this scholarship, I would have the opportunity to achieve my dreams and honor the sacrifices my family made to give me a better future.

Growing up, life wasn’t always easy for me. My family struggled with money, and there were times when we worried about having a place to live. On top of that, I was always the skinny kid who got teased for how I looked. It hurt a lot and made me feel small, like I wasn’t good enough. For a long time, I didn’t think I could do anything to change how I felt about myself. But everything started to get better the day I decided to walk into a gym. At first, I felt out of place. The weights were heavy, and I didn’t know how to use the machines. It was scary, and part of me wanted to give up. But I didn’t. I kept going back, even when it felt hard. Little by little, I got stronger, and something inside me started to change. I felt proud of myself for sticking with it, and my confidence grew. People at school noticed and started giving me compliments, but the best part was how I felt about myself. I wasn’t just stronger physically I felt better mentally and emotionally, too. The gym became more than a place to work out. It became a place where I could push myself, clear my mind, and grow. That experience taught me that change is possible, even when it feels impossible at first. It showed me that with patience and hard work, you can achieve more than you ever thought you could. Those lessons are why I want to help others find their own strength. My dream is to become an online fitness trainer and use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to inspire people, especially those who feel stuck or unsure of where to start. Social media is a powerful way to reach others, and I want to use it to share workouts, tips, and advice that make fitness fun and easy to understand. More importantly, I want to remind people that fitness isn’t just about how you look it’s about feeling good, loving yourself, and building confidence. I also want to help people who might be struggling emotionally, just like I was. Fitness taught me how to handle stress and believe in myself, and I want others to feel that same transformation. The gym gave me a sense of purpose and strength, and I want to show people that they can achieve that, too, no matter where they start. My goal is to build a positive community where people feel supported and encouraged to become the best version of themselves. I believe our generation can be stronger, healthier, and happier. By sharing my story and what I’ve learned, I hope to inspire others to take that first step toward change. Helping people feel better about themselves and their lives is what I’m most passionate about. This isn’t just a career for me it’s a way to make a real difference in the world, one person at a time.

Helping others has always been important to me because I know how much a little kindness can make a big difference. Growing up, my family didn’t have much. We struggled with money, and sometimes we worried about having enough to get by. That’s why I always try to give back whenever I can—because I know what it feels like to need help. One time, I had the chance to help a friend who was feeling stuck, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My friend was struggling with confidence and feeling unhappy about himself. He told me he felt too skinny and weak, and people teased him at school, just like they used to tease me. I told him about my own journey with fitness and how going to the gym helped me grow stronger, not just physically but mentally too. I offered to help him get started, and we went to the gym together. At first, he was nervous and thought he couldn’t do it, but I encouraged him to keep going. Over time, I saw him get stronger and more confident, and it made me so happy to see him feel better about himself. That experience taught me how powerful it can be to help someone believe in themselves. It showed me that even small actions, like encouraging someone or sharing what you’ve learned, can make a big difference in someone’s life. Since then, I’ve wanted to help more people, especially in my community, because I know how good it feels to lift someone up. There are so many ways to help others and make your community better. For example, volunteering at a food bank is a great way to help families who are struggling. I’ve done this a few times, and it feels good knowing that you’re helping people have meals they might not otherwise get. Another way to help is by donating clothes or items you don’t need anymore to shelters or thrift stores. Even small things like picking up trash in your neighborhood or helping an elderly neighbor with their yard work can make a big difference. For me, I’ve learned that one of the best ways I can help my community is by sharing my love of fitness. I want to teach people how to stay active and healthy because I know how much it can change your life. I’d love to use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to inspire people, especially kids and teens who might not feel confident or strong. Showing them that it’s okay to start small and take things one step at a time can make all the difference. Helping your community doesn’t have to be a big thing—it’s about caring for others and wanting to make life a little better for them. Whether it’s by volunteering, offering encouragement, or just being there for someone, we all have the power to make a positive impact. And when we help others, we make our whole community stronger and happier.

Growing up in a single parent household taught me the importance of being strong and never giving up, even when things got tough. My mom worked so hard to take care of my siblings and me, always making sure we had what we needed. Watching her manage everything on her own taught me the value of hard work and resilience. It also inspired me to help others who might be going through similar struggles. One way I’ve been able to give back is by coaching kids about the word of God at my church, the same church I’ve been attending since I was a child. Sharing the lessons of faith and hope that helped me through difficult times has been a way to make a difference in their lives. Seeing those kids grow stronger in their faith and become more confident reminded me how powerful small actions can be. When I lost my uncle during my sophomore year, it was one of the hardest times in my life. He was like a second father to me, always giving me advice and encouragement. After he passed, I realized how much his words meant. One thing he always said was, “You don’t have to carry everything on your own.” Those words stayed with me and taught me it’s okay to ask for help and lean on others. His wisdom showed me that I could still help people without carrying the weight of the world by myself. Because of these experiences, I know how much education and community matter. Education provides the tools to grow and succeed, while community offers the support we need to keep going. I want to use what I’ve learned to inspire others and give back in even bigger ways and its something a lot of kids I grew up with lacked so I want to do the right thing to help others. Whether it’s continuing to guide kids at church, sharing my story to encourage others, or helping those who feel stuck, I want to show people that they’re not alone. My goal is to create a space where people feel supported and understood, just like my church has done for me. I believe everyone can overcome challenges and do great things, and I want to be a part of helping others see their potential. The lessons I’ve learned about faith, resilience, and giving back have shaped me, and I hope to use those lessons to create positive change in my community.

Growing up in a Nigerian family in the United States taught me the importance of working hard, having faith, and never giving up. When my family came to America, we faced many challenges, like not having much money, learning new things about the culture, and trying to fit in. Even though it was hard, these struggles helped me become the person I am today. One of the biggest challenges my family faced was starting over with very little. My parents left everything behind in Nigeria to give us a better future. They worked long hours at tough jobs, doing whatever they could to make sure we had food to eat and a roof over our heads. Watching them sacrifice so much taught me to never give up, no matter how hard life gets. Their example showed me that hard work and determination can help you overcome anything. It was also hard adjusting to life in America. My family didn’t always understand the culture, and sometimes people made us feel different. In school, I was teased because of my accent and the Nigerian food I brought for lunch. At first, it made me feel embarrassed and out of place, but I started to realize that being different is what makes me unique. I learned to be proud of where I came from and to embrace my Nigerian heritage. The lessons I learned from my family inspired me to give back to others. At my church, I coach kids about the word of God, sharing stories and lessons to help them stay strong and believe in themselves. I know how hard life can be, and I want to show them that they’re never alone. Faith has always been a big part of my life, and I hope to inspire them to trust in God and believe in their own strength. Even though life hasn’t always been easy, I’m thankful for the challenges my family and I have faced. These experiences have shaped me into a stronger and more caring person. I’ve learned to stay hopeful, work hard, and support others whenever I can. Today, I’m proud of my Nigerian roots and the values my family has passed down to me. I want to keep sharing those lessons with others, helping them see that no matter where you come from or what struggles you face, you can always rise above and achieve your dreams.

Growing up in a family that struggled taught me how important it is to help others and create change. My challenges made me see the world differently and gave me the courage to make a difference in my community. By sharing my experiences and taking small actions, I have been able to help others and make a positive impact on their lives. In high school, I saw that some kids in my neighborhood were struggling in school. Many of them came from families like mine, where money was tight, and they didn’t always have the help they needed. I decided to start tutoring at our local library. I helped them with their homework, showed them better ways to study, and encouraged them to never give up. Over time, their grades improved, and I noticed they became more confident. It made me happy to see them believe in themselves, and I realized that even small actions can make a big difference. When my uncle passed away during my sophomore year, it was one of the hardest times of my life. He was like a second father to me and always shared wise advice. One thing he always said was, “Be the person others can lean on when times get tough.” After he passed, I wanted to honor his memory by continuing to help people. I started a group at school called “Life Talks,” where students could come together to talk about their struggles and support each other. It became a safe space where people could share their feelings and feel less alone. During this time, I also started watching a TV show called The Leftovers. The show was about loss and learning how to move forward. It helped me realize that even when life is hard, we can still find ways to grow and help others. Inspired by the show, I organized a small event in my community to bring people together and talk about how to stay strong during tough times. The event helped people open up, feel supported, and connect with others. These experiences taught me how important it is to help others, even in small ways. By tutoring kids, starting a support group, and organizing community events, I saw how my actions could create real change. The lessons I’ve learned about kindness, resilience, and giving back have made me who I am today, and I hope to keep making a difference for years to come.
