My name is Matthew Negroni, I am currently enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University pursuing a degree in Unmanned aircraft systems. Growing up in a Hispanic family has been one of the greatest blessings of my life, shaping my values, worldview, and sense of identity. My heritage has instilled in me a deep appreciation for community, perseverance, and the importance of helping others—a perspective that influences every aspect of my personal and professional journey.
One of the most defining aspects of my upbringing has been the strong emphasis on family. In Hispanic culture, family is more than just the people you live with; it’s a network of support, love, and encouragement that helps you weather any storm. Growing up in this environment taught me the value of unity and the importance of looking out for one another. This mindset has shaped the way I approach relationships, whether with friends, classmates, or colleagues. I’ve learned to see people as part of a larger community and to treat everyone with respect, compassion, and an open heart.
My family’s immigrant story has also taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. Many in my family came to the United States with the hope of building a better future, and their sacrifices have always inspired me. Watching my parents and relatives work tirelessly to provide for our family taught me that success isn’t handed to you—it’s earned through dedication and resilience. This lesson has been especially meaningful in my academic journey. Whenever I face challenges in my studies, I think of the struggles my family overcame and use their example as motivation to push through.
Being part of a Hispanic family has also given me a unique perspective on the importance of cultural diversity and inclusion. Growing up, I experienced the beauty of bilingualism, the richness of traditional celebrations, and the strength of a community that cherishes its roots while embracing new opportunities. These experiences have made me more open-minded and appreciative of other cultures and ways of life. I believe that diversity is a strength, and I strive to bring this perspective into everything I do, whether it’s collaborating on a group project, engaging in community service, or building relationships in my career.
Another way my heritage has influenced me is through the value placed on helping others. In Hispanic culture, there’s a deep sense of responsibility to give back, whether to family, friends, or the broader community. This value has inspired me to pursue a career where I can make a difference in people’s lives. I hope to use my education and skills to contribute to meaningful solutions that address real-world challenges, especially in underserved communities.
Ultimately, my Hispanic family background has given me a strong foundation of faith, resilience, and purpose. It has shaped the way I see the world—not as a place of obstacles, but as a place of opportunities to serve, connect, and make a positive impact. I am proud of my heritage and grateful for the lessons it continues to teach me.

Reflecting on the service of my close family member, my uncle, who served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years, I have come to understand the profound influence that a life of service can have on shaping one’s values, work ethic, and sense of purpose. His commitment to serving his country with dedication, resilience, and unwavering integrity has deeply inspired me and has played a pivotal role in influencing my path toward a career in the trades.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices he made and the humility with which he carried out his duties. My uncle’s service taught me the importance of discipline, accountability, and service to others. From an early age, I understood that his career was not just a job—it was a calling that required putting the needs of others before his own, a principle that resonated with me and laid the foundation for the values I strive to embody today. These values have shaped my character, instilling in me a strong sense of responsibility and a work ethic that is centered on dedication and excellence. It was this exposure to service and sacrifice that drew me to a career in the trades, where I could use my skills to serve others in a tangible way and build a future that embodies hard work and purpose.
The lessons my uncle taught me about commitment and the importance of supporting one's community have fueled my decision to pursue a career in the trades. Working in this field allows me to contribute meaningfully to society, just as he did. The trades offer a unique opportunity to engage in projects that create real, lasting change—whether it’s constructing a home, installing essential infrastructure, or making repairs that people rely on daily. This ability to work hands-on and see the results of my labor provides a sense of fulfillment that I know my uncle felt during his service. It is through this lens that I view my career in the trades as an extension of that same spirit of service and commitment, a way to give back to the community and uphold the values I admire.
My uncle's military background taught me more than just discipline; it imparted critical lessons in adaptability, teamwork, and leadership. These lessons are crucial in the trades, where no project is ever quite the same and the ability to adjust to unexpected challenges is essential. I learned that leadership doesn’t come from being the loudest voice but from building trust, communicating effectively, and motivating others to work toward a common goal. Teamwork, another valuable lesson, taught me that while individual skills are important, success is truly dependent on collaboration and mutual support. In the trades, projects are rarely completed solo, and the ability to coordinate with others, understand their strengths, and contribute my own skills effectively will be vital.
I also learned the importance of clear, precise communication from my uncle’s service. Military operations often rely on meticulous communication, and this is just as true when working in the trades. Whether explaining project details to clients, coordinating with a team, or troubleshooting on the job, being able to communicate clearly and professionally is indispensable. These skills will not only help me perform my job well but will also build trust and confidence with colleagues and clients.

Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, one of the cornerstone works of Stoic philosophy. This text is rich with insight into human nature, virtue, and the pursuit of a meaningful life. Here is an excerpt from Book 4, Section 3:"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. But if you are distressed by anything internal, that is, by your own opinions, recognize that here too you have the power to revoke them, and that you are not at all harmed by the things themselves, but only by your opinion of them."
In this passage, Marcus Aurelius articulates a central tenet of Stoic thought: that suffering is not caused by external events but by our subjective interpretation of them. This idea challenges the common perception that our pain and distress come from the world around us, suggesting instead that our emotional turmoil is rooted in our own judgment and perceptions. The essence of Marcus Aurelius' philosophy here lies in the empowering assertion that individuals have control over their responses and the power to change them.
The first significant insight in this excerpt is the distinction between external and internal sources of suffering. External events, whether they are an insult from a stranger, a failure in one's career, or the unpredictability of nature, are impartial and exist independently of us. They are neutral by nature; they have no inherent power to distress us. It is only when we project our judgments, fears, or desires onto these events that they take on the power to disturb us. Marcus is not denying the reality of negative experiences but emphasizing that it is our reaction to these experiences that ultimately dictates the impact on our well-being.
The second part of the passage, focusing on internal suffering, is equally important. Marcus implies that even if we internalize an issue—such as a negative opinion about ourselves, self-doubt, or guilt—this too is subject to our will. This does not mean that we can easily rid ourselves of painful emotions but that, through conscious effort and philosophical practice, we can choose to change our response. This claim invites us to explore the nature of opinion and belief: opinions are not immutable truths; they are constructs shaped by our understanding and attitudes. Therefore, if we possess the ability to question and revise our beliefs, we also hold the key to mitigating internal suffering.
The underlying meaning Marcus Aurelius seeks to convey is an ethical imperative: that true peace and resilience come from within, rather than from external circumstances. We must strive to cultivate a mindset where we recognize that we are the architects of our emotional landscapes, not at the mercy of external conditions or the opinions of others. This realization can lead to a greater sense of autonomy and inner freedom. By relinquishing the erroneous belief that our distress is purely a response to external events, we empower ourselves to approach life with more equanimity and clarity.
In practical terms, applying Marcus' advice means practicing mindfulness and cognitive reframing. Mindfulness involves observing one’s reactions without immediate judgment, creating a momentary pause to allow for conscious, deliberate response rather than a knee-jerk emotional reaction. Cognitive reframing, on the other hand, is the process of identifying and changing negative thought patterns. When we take ownership of our opinions and judgments, we begin to steer our lives toward emotional and mental equilibrium.
To embody Marcus Aurelius’ philosophy is to live with intentionality and to accept responsibility for our mental state. It compels us to become the stewards of our thoughts, distinguishing between what we can change and what we cannot. This distinction frees us from futile attempts to control the uncontrollable, instead channeling our energy into the only domain over which we truly have power: our inner world.
Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
As global challenges continue to grow—natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and environmental threats—the need for effective, compassionate responses becomes ever more critical. One avenue through which we can foster empathy and promote a culture of care is through the strategic use of technology and volunteer efforts. My background as a drone pilot who has assisted communities during hurricanes, search and rescue missions, and other emergencies has given me firsthand insight into how technology, when combined with human compassion, can make a significant difference. By leveraging my experiences and skills, I am committed to using them to build a more empathetic and understanding global community.
During my work in disaster-stricken areas, I have witnessed the resilience and strength of communities in the face of adversity, but I have also seen the overwhelming challenges they face. Sharing these stories through articles, public speaking engagements, and social media can help people understand what communities go through during emergencies, humanizing the data and statistics that often dominate news reports.
Equally important is developing collaborative initiatives that use drones for humanitarian purposes. Drones have proven to be invaluable tools for search and rescue operations, mapping affected areas, and delivering essential supplies to hard-to-reach locations. My firsthand knowledge and skills can be leveraged to initiate or contribute to projects that extend the use of drones in global disaster response. Collaborating with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local governments, and other community leaders can expand the reach and efficiency of aid delivery, making critical resources more accessible and timely. Through these collaborations, we can ensure that the assistance provided is tailored to the specific needs of different communities, increasing the efficacy of relief efforts.
Educating and training others is another way to build a more empathetic world. By hosting workshops and training programs, I can pass on my expertise in operating drones for emergency response and humanitarian work. Training people in under-resourced or vulnerable areas how to use this technology empowers them to help their own communities in times of need. This not only builds local capabilities but instills a sense of solidarity and self-reliance. When people are equipped with the tools and knowledge to act during crises, they become part of a broader network that reinforces mutual support and empathy.
Advocacy for policy change is essential for embedding drones and other technology into mainstream disaster response strategies. With my understanding of the potential of drones, I can engage with policy-makers to demonstrate their role in effective disaster relief. By working with government agencies, legislative bodies, and humanitarian organizations, we can advocate for policies that prioritize the integration of technology in emergency response. Such policy changes could streamline aid operations, enable faster resource distribution, and improve the overall preparedness of communities for future crises.
Creating a platform dedicated to empathy-driven technology can serve as a hub for humanitarian efforts and technological innovation. Such a platform could showcase the positive impact that drones and other technologies have had in crisis response and act as a resource for those looking to contribute their time and skills to humanitarian work. By promoting stories, training materials, and partnerships, we can inspire more people to use their own skills for the betterment of society. This approach not only highlights the potential of technological tools but also underscores the critical role that empathy plays in using these tools effectively.

While in high school, I was fascinated by the world of drones. I remember spending hours on youtube looking for what is the new drone in the market. This curiosity evolved into a genuine interest in how drones could be used to make life better, more efficient, and more exciting. As I got older, I gravitated toward subjects in school and college that fed this fascination.
Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), represent the pinnacle of such innovation. The concept of a flying device that could be controlled remotely or autonomously to gather data, deliver goods, or capture breathtaking imagery was mind-boggling to me. Drones combined everything I loved about engineering: their complex mechanical systems, the integration of cutting-edge electronics, and the potential for software-driven capabilities. The ability to merge software with hardware to create a product that can operate in real-world scenarios was what sparked my enthusiasm for the field.
Another significant factor that cemented my choice was the potential impact that drones could have on society and the world at large. Drones have the power to transform industries such as agriculture, logistics, real estate, and disaster response. The way drones can be used for precision farming to monitor crop health, manage water distribution, and apply fertilizers more efficiently has the potential to revolutionize food production and sustainability. Similarly, in search and rescue missions, drones can reach areas that are dangerous or difficult for humans to access, saving countless lives by providing real-time data and situational awareness.
The humanitarian aspect of drones drew me in as well. Their role in disaster relief—whether delivering emergency supplies or mapping out disaster zones to assist first responders—was a perfect intersection of technology and social good. The idea of developing or contributing to technologies that not only push the boundaries of what’s possible but also make a tangible difference in the world was a powerful motivator for me.
My journey into the drone industry wasn’t just a sudden decision; it was cultivated through educational and practical experiences. During my college years, I participated in several engineering competitions that involved designing and building drones for specific challenges. These competitions were pivotal moments that sharpened my skills in both theoretical and hands-on engineering. I learned about aerodynamics, how to optimize flight stability, and the intricacies of drone propulsion systems. I also gained proficiency in coding and machine learning, which are essential for developing the autonomous capabilities of UAVs.
Looking ahead, the future of the drone industry is incredibly promising. With advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the push for regulatory acceptance, drones are becoming more sophisticated and accessible than ever before. They are no longer just tools for hobbyists or specialized applications; they are integral components of the infrastructure of the future, with applications extending to fields like environmental monitoring, urban planning, and public safety.
The potential to be a part of a workforce that is redefining industries and improving lives is a motivating factor. I am particularly interested in working on projects that focus on enhancing the autonomy and safety of drones, integrating advanced sensors, and developing systems that can operate in dynamic and unpredictable environments.
The field of drones perfectly encapsulates what I value most in my work: challenging engineering problems, opportunities for creative solutions, and the chance to make a tangible impact. As the drone industry continues to evolve, I am eager to be a part of it, pushing the limits of what these remarkable machines can achieve and helping shape a future where technology serves as a powerful force for good.
