Growing up, I was always fascinated by the smell of sawdust and the sight of my dad's workshop. I spent countless hours watching him in his shop, transforming raw wood into beautiful, functional pieces. These early experiences, combined with a general interest in construction, instilled in me a deep appreciation for working with my dad in his workshop. In high school, I began working with a construction contractor. I enjoyed the hands-on learning environment and the challenge of problem-solving that came with each project. From building an entire house to just roofing a home, I've learned that it requires a lot of work, but it also brings great satisfaction in creating something with my own hands. Ultimately, my passion for building construction and my desire for a fulfilling career motivated me to pursue a degree in construction. I am eager to continue learning and developing my skills, and I am excited about the prospect of contributing to the built environment through my work. I believe that a building construction career combines creativity, technical skills, and practical application, making it the perfect fit for my interests and goals.

Joe Ford Trade Scholarship
After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in building construction, a trade that fits my strengths, interests, and long‑term goals. I have always enjoyed hands‑on work, and my experiences throughout high school have shown me that construction is the path where I can build a meaningful future. Whether it’s framing, concrete work, or reading blueprints, I am drawn to the process of creating something real and lasting. Construction is a trade where hard work pays off, and that is the kind of career I want to build my life around.
My interest in this trade began when I started working with a construction contractor during high school. That job opened my eyes to how much I enjoy working with tools, solving problems, and seeing progress at the end of each day. I like the challenge of figuring out how things fit together and the satisfaction of knowing I contributed to a project. I also enjoy the teamwork that comes with construction — communicating, planning, and helping each other get the job done safely and correctly. These experiences made it clear that building construction is the right trade for me.
Throughout high school, I’ve had many opportunities to develop the problem‑solving and creative thinking skills needed in the trades. In FFA, I worked on welding projects that required me to think through angles, heat levels, and techniques to make strong, clean welds. Welding forced me to slow down, pay attention to detail, and adjust when something didn’t go as planned. I also worked on building and shop projects, where I had to measure accurately, plan, and fix mistakes when things didn’t line up perfectly. Outside of school, my construction job taught me how to troubleshoot real‑world issues — whether it was adjusting framing, fixing layout problems, or finding safer and more efficient ways to complete tasks. These experiences helped me develop the mindset needed to succeed in the trades.
I already have a clear plan for my future. I am enrolled at Northeast Community College to earn my Associate of Applied Science in Building Construction. I have researched the program thoroughly, and it offers exactly the type of hands‑on training I need. I plan to complete my degree, gain experience working for a construction company, and continue building my skills in framing, concrete, estimating, and project planning. I have already made connections through my past construction job, and I plan to use those relationships to find work while I’m in school or shortly after graduating. My long‑term goal is to eventually run my own construction business and serve my community.
If you were to call an adult who knows me well, my boss, Dana Tompkin, would recommend me for this scholarship because I am dependable, hardworking, and committed to entering the trades. They would say that I show up, give full effort, and take pride in doing things the right way. They would also say that I am motivated, willing to learn, and serious about my future. I have a clear plan, a strong work ethic, and the determination to succeed in the trades.

Throughout high school, I was fortunate to have teachers who supported me, but none influenced my life the way Miss Horak, my agricultural teacher and FFA advisor, did. She played a major role in shaping not only my high school experience but also the way I approach challenges, leadership, and my future career. Her impact went far beyond the classroom, and the lessons she taught me continue to guide me today.
From the moment I joined her agriculture classes and became involved in FFA, Miss Horak pushed me to give my best effort in everything I did. She had a way of seeing potential in students long before they saw it in themselves, and she made sure we lived up to it. She never let me settle for “good enough.” Instead, she encouraged me to take on responsibilities, try new skills, and step into roles that I never imagined myself doing.
One of the biggest examples of this was when she encouraged me to run for Vice President of the Shelton FFA Chapter. At first, I didn’t think I was ready for a leadership position. I doubted whether I had the confidence or the experience to take on that kind of role. But Miss Horak didn’t let me talk myself out of it. She reminded me that leadership isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being willing to learn, work hard, and support others. Because she believed in me, I found the courage to believe in myself. Serving as Vice President ended up being one of the most meaningful experiences of my high school years, and it taught me responsibility, communication, and how to lead by example.
Miss Horak also pushed me to try things I never expected to enjoy, like welding. I had no experience with it and wasn’t sure I would be any good, but she encouraged me to give it a chance. That hands‑on experience opened my eyes to how much I enjoy working with tools, solving practical problems, and building things with my own hands. Looking back, that moment played a big role in guiding me toward my future career in building construction.
What made Miss Horak truly special was the way she balanced high expectations with genuine support. She challenged me, but she also encouraged me. She pushed me, but she also believed in me. She taught me to take pride in my work, to step outside my comfort zone, and to never be afraid of trying something new. Her influence helped me develop confidence, resilience, and a strong work ethic — qualities that I carry with me as I prepare for a career in the trades.
Miss Horak didn’t just teach agriculture. She taught me how to grow — as a student, as a leader, and as a person. Her guidance shaped the way I approach my goals and the way I see my future, and I will always be grateful for the impact she had on my life.

My name is Matthew, and I am pursuing a future in the skilled trades because I believe in building things that matter — structures, communities, and a career I can be proud of. Growing up in a small town has shaped my values and work ethic. I learned early on that showing up, working hard, and helping others are not just expectations but a way of life. Those lessons, combined with my hands‑on experience in construction, have guided me toward a career where I can use my skills to make a real impact.
My interest in the trades began when I started working with a construction contractor. What started as a job quickly became something much more meaningful. I discovered how much I enjoy working with my hands, solving practical problems, and seeing a project come together from the ground up. Something is rewarding about stepping back at the end of the day and seeing the progress you helped create. That experience confirmed that construction is not just a career path for me — it is something I genuinely enjoy and want to build my future around.
I plan to pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Building Construction at Northeast Community College. This program aligns perfectly with the type of learner I am. I thrive in hands‑on environments where I can apply what I’m learning directly to real projects. The program will give me essential skills such as framing, concrete work, blueprint reading, estimating, and project planning. These are the foundations I need to become a skilled and dependable tradesman.
My long‑term goal is to gain experience working for a construction company, learn from professionals in the field, and eventually run my own construction business. I want to understand not only the technical side of the trade but also the business side — budgeting, scheduling, communication, and customer service. I know that becoming a successful business owner requires patience, leadership, and a willingness to keep learning, and I am committed to developing those qualities.
Several traits will help me succeed in this career. I am dependable and motivated, and I take pride in doing things the right way. Whether it was athletics, FFA, or my work experiences, I have always been someone who shows up ready to work and gives full effort. I also work well with others and value teamwork, which is essential on any job site. Construction requires communication, problem‑solving, and the ability to stay steady when challenges come up — all skills I have developed through experience.
Pursuing the trades is more than a career choice for me. It is an opportunity to build a future where I can use my skills to serve others, support my community, and create a life defined by hard work and purpose. I am excited for the path ahead and confident that the trades will allow me to grow, lead, and eventually build something of my own.

My name is Matthew Goldfish, and I plan to pursue a career in building construction. I have been accepted to Northeast Community College, where I will study Building Construction and continue developing the hands‑on skills I’ve gained through real job‑site experience. My long‑term goal is to work my way up in the construction field and eventually run my own business. I’m motivated to learn, lead, and contribute to the communities around me.
In construction and other skilled trades, teamwork and communication are essential, and I’ve learned that firsthand through different leadership experiences. One moment that stands out happened during a group project in high school when my class was assigned to build a small wooden structure for a community event. At first, everyone was working separately, and nothing was lining up the way it needed to. People were frustrated, measurements were off, and we were falling behind schedule. Even though I wasn’t officially the leader, I decided to step up because I knew the project wouldn’t get done unless someone organized the group.
I called everyone together and suggested we slow down, divide the tasks, and follow one plan instead of five different ones. I assigned roles based on what each person felt confident doing — measuring, cutting, assembling, and checking for accuracy. Once we had a clear system, the project started coming together smoothly. The structure turned out sturdy and clean, and our teacher complimented us on how well we recovered after a rough start. That experience taught me that leadership isn’t about being in charge — it’s about recognizing when a team needs direction and being willing to step forward.
Looking back, there are things I would do differently. At the beginning of the project, I assumed everyone would naturally fall into place without much communication. If I could redo it, I would start by gathering the group right away, discussing the plan, and making sure everyone understood their role before we picked up any tools. That would have prevented the early mistakes and saved us time.
Overall, the experience showed me the importance of initiative, teamwork, and clear communication — qualities that are essential in any trade, especially one where safety and precision matter as much as they do in construction.

My name is Matthew, and I am preparing for a future in the building construction trade, a field that has become a major part of my identity and long‑term goals. Growing up in a small community has shaped my values and work ethic, teaching me the importance of responsibility, service, and doing things the right way. Those lessons, combined with my hands‑on experience in construction, have guided me toward a career where I can build meaningful projects and contribute to the communities around me. As I move forward with my education and training, I am committed to developing the skills, knowledge, and character needed to succeed in this industry.
The trade I plan to pursue is residential and commercial construction, with the long‑term goal of eventually owning my own construction business. I enjoy working with my hands, solving practical problems, and seeing the results of hard work come to life. Construction is a field where every day brings a new challenge, and that is something that motivates me. I want to be part of projects that improve people’s lives — whether that means building homes, renovating community spaces, or helping create structures that will last for generations.

Over time, I want to learn the business side of construction — including budgeting, scheduling, communication, and customer relations — so that I can one day run my own company with confidence.
I believe I possess several traits that will empower me in this trade. One of my strongest qualities is dependability. Whether it was athletics, FFA leadership, or my work at Green Brick Construction, I have always been someone who shows up ready to work and gives full effort. Construction requires consistency, reliability, and a willingness to push through tough tasks, and I have learned those habits through experience. I am also motivated and eager to learn. I enjoy taking on new challenges, asking questions, and improving my skills. In construction, there is always something new to master, and I am excited to keep growing throughout my career.
Another trait that will help me succeed is my ability to work well with others. Construction is a team‑oriented field where communication and cooperation are essential. My experiences in athletics and leadership have taught me how to support others, listen, and contribute to a shared goal. I also value patience and problem‑solving — two qualities that are important when things don’t go as planned on a job site. Instead of getting frustrated, I focus on finding solutions and staying steady.
Thank you for taking the time to read my application and consider my aspirations.
Sincerely,
