WinnerTo me, inspiration comes from those who embody resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment—not just to personal growth, but to helping those around them grow. My greatest sources of inspiration are the people and experiences that have shaped me into who I am today—the mentors who have challenged me, the challenges that have tested me, and the victories that have fueled my drive to push forward.
One of my earliest inspirations came from my experience in ski racing, a sport that remains one of my favorite hobbies. Skiing demanded more than just skill—it required discipline, mental toughness, and the ability to get up after every fall, and trust me, there were many. Competing at a high level taught me that failure is not the end but a stepping stone to something greater. The long and grueling training sessions, the bitter cold, and the never-ending pursuit of improvement bestowed a work ethic upon me that I now apply to every aspect of my life.
Beyond competing, I wanted to give back to the sport that shaped me. During my sophomore year, I volunteered as a Ski Patrol in Training every weekend from December to March upstate. This experience deepened my appreciation for the responsibility that comes with skiing—not just the thrill of competition, but the duty to help others stay safe. Assisting patrollers in responding to injuries, monitoring trails, and learning basic emergency care reinforced my passion for medicine and my desire to provide care in high-stakes environments.
Reading is another hobby that has shaped me. Books provide an escape, but they also challenge my perspective. Whether it’s a novel that immerses me in a different world or a nonfiction book that expands my understanding of medicine, biology, or history, reading fuels my curiosity. It has played a crucial role in my academic journey, encouraging me to ask deeper questions and seek out new knowledge.
My fascination with biology grounds my curiosity in the scientific wonders of the human body. Mount Sinai enabled me to take AP Bio, traditionally a challenging class reserved for upperclassmen, as a sophomore. This prepared me for my internship at Stony Brook, which fueled my interest in applying this knowledge to save lives. This determination drives my goal to attend medical school and become a doctor. Discovering organizations like Doctors Without Borders solidified this dream. Although my attempt to start a high school chapter was turned down, my interest hasn’t faded.
With a major in Biology, I will gain the scientific knowledge necessary to address medical challenges and provide effective healthcare. Using this scholarship, I intend to contribute both scientifically and humanistically to improving healthcare in underserved regions and make an impact in global health through Doctors Without Borders, demonstrating the power of a well-rounded education. My passion for this cause stems from the beliefs and ideals instilled in me at a young age—that all people deserve the chance to access healthcare regardless of their own situations. These experiences that I had as a child inspire me in my future endeavors. The dedication of health professionals inspires me to imagine a future where I can make a real difference in healthcare through Doctors Without Borders. Collaborating with like-minded individuals will help amplify my efforts to raise awareness and drive change. This scholarship will allow me to take one more step, no matter how big or small, toward making a meaningful impact both in a clinical and research setting, providing care and support to those who need it most.
