I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management in December 2020. While completing my degree I worked full time as the sole front desk in a non-profit dental office. After a year of this I was promoted to office manager and I am currently in this role. My position at this office has given a passion for public health. In the fall I hope to pursue further education in Health Informatics.

Community health has quickly become a big concern for the world. The pandemic has left no one untouched and has opened our eyes to the affect the health of our community has on every aspect of our lives. Access to care is crucial for all members of the community and has not only a social impact on the community but also an economic impact.
Community health has many areas to consider, it is not only medical care but also mental health, behavioral health, family support, financial health, education, and dental health. My personal experience with children in foster care has opened my eyes to the importance of support in these areas. I had the opportunity to accompany my foster brother to many counseling appointments where we worked as a team with his mother to create an environment he could excel in. The relationship we created with him and his biological mother has withstood many obstacles and persists to this day, even after he was placed back in his moms care.
We continue to support his health in all areas, we sign him up for football and other sports to promote his physical health. I do my best to never miss a practice or game to continue to build our relationship and create a familial support system. We assist with babysitting so his mom can be sure to go to work and promote their family's financial health. I have spent countless hours tutoring him and finding new ways to make reading exciting, I make an effort to create relationships with his teachers so that we are always able to support his education and behavioral growth. I have been so lucky to have this experience with him and others, it has promoted so much personal growth and opened my eyes to the importance of all areas of a person's health and the amount of support it requires.
Another opportunity I have been given is to see the impact dental health has on a person's well being. Many people do not realize the impact dental care can truly have on quality of life. In my position at a non profit dental care organization I have watched the transformation a person goes through when they get the dental care they need. Unhealthy teeth can prevent a person from receiving life saving care such as surgeries or cancer treatment. Having bad teeth not only has a big effect on your physical health but, can have have just as big of an impact on your mental health. I have worked with many patients that felt ashamed by the appearance of their teeth, there is nothing quite like helping a patient go from a mouth full of painful, infected teeth to a brand new set of dentures. Not only are they no longer in pain, their confidence soars and their smile is infectious.
I have had a wide variety of experiences in the different areas of community health that have taught me the importance of it. Improving the access of preventative care and support in all areas is something that should be a priority for everyone. Understanding this is one of the most important steps in creating a good quality of life for every member of the community.
