My research and writing on late 19th and early 20th century European art aims to bring awareness to overlooked women artists. Through my work, I hope to present an authentic and comprehensive picture of the past without harmful biases (patriarchal, racial, or otherwise) which, unfortunately, are still shockingly present in modern curricula and point out the flaws in the traditional framing of Western art history. So often we are unaware of how the images we see and the stories we read are merely interpretations of history, usually told from a privileged, white, male point of view. Therefore, what we think of as “objective” history is only one side of a diverse reality of experience. Within this realm of visual historiography, I am particularly passionate about studying the representation of women’s bodies in Western Art, and the longlasting impacts the effects of male involvement in the portrayal and study of the female nude can have on society’s perception of women. My hope is to attend graduate school where I aim at shifting our current interpretation of Western art history from a view that is predicated on the stances of those in power, to one that reflects all underrepresented voices and movements that have contributed to our collective understanding.
