Hello! My name is Maryana and I am a senior graduating in 2025. I going to be a first-generation college Mexican student. I have many hobbies including sports like volleyball and badminton. Additionally, I love cooking and baking for family and friends. My goal in the coming years is to attend college, specifically a UC, and study something health-related. I am still not sure what career I want to go into but I would love to be a part of the medical field. My top three majors are Molecular and Medical Microbiology, Nursing Science, and Public Health. I want to go to college and take advantage of all the opportunities presented to me because my parents didn't have nearly as many opportunities to get an education and I want to show them that all their hard work is paying off. In school, I take all the AP courses that I can take. I have also been a part of my school's pre-med club where we learned about different career options in the medical field and did some hands-on activities which included suturing. In addition to this, I am in a ten-month college program called Experience Berkeley High School which has helped me figure out how I can reach my goal of joining the medical field. I also want to go to college because I am interested in STEM. I want to study anything related to science so that I can one day join the medical field and have a positive effect on other people's lives. Thank you for your consideration!

Women in STEM Scholarship
I want to further my education in STEAM, specifically human biology and medicine because I have seen firsthand how amazing medical staff are when they helped my family. I am a first-generation, Mexican-American college student who came from two immigrant parents who came to the United States with little to nothing. In 2023, my dad, who is the main caregiver in my family, was hospitalized. Not long after getting there, the medical staff told us that they needed to amputate a part of his foot due to an infection. Due to this, my dad was not able to work for around four to five months after the surgery which then resulted in a loss of income. It was a difficult time for all of us, especially for him, so I tried to be there in all ways I could and help him. It was a scary time but the staff at the hospital made everything feel clear and safe. The nurses and doctors were reassuring to not only my dad but also to me. They made me feel like everything was going to be okay even during his time in recovery and showed compassion the whole time.
Science has always been a subject that I have been interested in. I like to learn about topics related to the human body outside of school and in my free time. I read different research papers from universities about discoveries like new technologies being made to make better treatments for diabetes and how newly developed medicines are being tested to cure other illnesses. I have been interested in joining the medical field so seeing how the nurses and doctors were able to make us feel reassured, solidified my interest in the medical field and human biology. I want to give that feeling to others who need it. In my school right now, I am taking AP Biology and Psychology which both have been interesting because I am learning both the science side of development of life and the mental side. These classes have also helped me learn more about the path I would like to take in the medical field including working in the emergency department.
As a woman interested in STEM and pursuing it, I will become a role model to other young girls of color so that they can see that they can do it as well. When others think of doctors or physicians, often they think of white men but I want to be a part of the change of perspective. I want them to think of a whole diverse group of people who are there to spread compassion and care. This scholarship will help me become a role model to other young girls showing them it is possible to be in the STEM field and maybe inspire them to one day join the medical field just like how the medical staff who helped my dad inspired me.

This scholarship can help me achieve my goal of joining the medical field. In college, I would like to join clubs related to the medical field and make a club that informs people about different careers in the medical field. In the colleges I am applying to, I am pursuing majors in human biology and public health because I want to be there for others who could be in the same position I was when my dad was injured. I want to be able to make others feel better in tough situations even in uncertainty and become a role model for others in similar circumstances. This scholarship will help me become a role model to others and maybe inspire them to one day join the medical field just like how the people who helped my dad inspired me. Getting this scholarship will help me reach my goal of doing this financially and will help me learn more in-depth how to better help people in need. I want to dedicate my life to helping others and turning hard situations into ones that good can be taken from.
