My name is Marvin Wells Jr., and I’m pursuing a degree in computer engineering because I’m passionate about how technology works and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. My interest in computers started early, inspired by both curiosity and my mother. She earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science and has built a successful career in technology, all while being an active member of our community. Watching her balance work, family, and community service taught me the value of education, determination, and giving back. Growing up, I’ve always looked for ways to serve and lead. I’ve volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Open Hands, and helped clean up low-income Atlanta neighborhoods with my football team. I’ve seen how much difference teamwork and a caring attitude can make. My mom’s example also motivated me to help prepare and distribute care packages for the homeless, which taught me that leadership doesn’t always mean being in charge, it means showing up, being consistent, and doing what’s right even when no one’s watching. I also played junior varsity and varsity football in high school. Being part of a team taught me discipline, time management, and how to work under pressure. I know will help me succeed in college and my future career. It also showed me the importance of supporting others, especially when things get tough. Outside of sports and service, I’m passionate about gaming and game design. I enjoy exploring how games are built and how they can be used not only to entertain but to teach, connect people, and tell powerful stories. I hope to use my computer engineering skills in this space, possibly working in virtual reality, education tech, or software development that helps others learn and grow. The degree I’m working toward will give me the technical knowledge and experience I need to build meaningful tools and systems. I want to create technologies that make life better, whether that’s through smart devices, helpful apps, or programs that support education and health in underserved communities. I also hope to use what I learn to mentor younger students, especially those who don’t see a future for themselves in tech. To me, success isn’t just about personal achievement, it’s about lifting others as I grow. I want to be the kind of engineer who not only builds great things but also builds up people and communities. Earning this degree is a key step toward that goal. With the right education and support, I believe I can help make the tech world more inclusive, creative, and impactful—and I’m excited to be a part of shaping that future.

Giving back to my community has always been important to me. Whether I’m helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering with Open Hands, or cleaning up low-income Atlanta neighborhoods with my football team, I’ve learned that small acts of service can have a big impact. These experiences have shaped the way I see the world and inspired me to continue helping others through my career and personal life. I’m also inspired by what I’ve seen at home. I have seen my mom volunteer at food drives around the Atlanta area, prepare care packages for the homeless, and go out to distribute them with kindness and no expectation in return. Watching her serve others taught me that giving back isn’t something you do once—it’s something you live by. Her example helped me understand that real change begins when people care enough to act. One thing I’ve learned through volunteering is that people often just need a helping hand—someone who cares enough to show up, support them, and create opportunities for change. That’s why I plan to use my passion for computer engineering to make a positive difference after college. I believe technology has the power to solve real problems and improve lives, especially in underserved communities. Whether it’s creating smart tools that improve access to education, developing systems that help people manage their health, or working on technology that supports local nonprofits, I want my work to have purpose. I’m also interested in game design and virtual reality, and I believe these tools can go beyond entertainment. In the future, I hope to create educational games or programs that help students learn in new and fun ways, especially those in communities where resources are limited. Technology should be something that brings people together and opens doors—not something only available to a few. Even while I’m in college, I plan to continue giving back. I’ll look for service opportunities on campus and in the local community. After college, I hope to mentor young students, especially those interested in tech, and share what I’ve learned to help them succeed. I want to show them that no matter where you come from, you can make a difference. I believe we need more people who are not only skilled but also kind, thoughtful, and willing to serve. That’s the kind of person I strive to be. My goal isn’t just to have a career in technology, it’s to use that career to create positive change. In short, I plan to keep helping others, just like I do now, but on a bigger scale. Whether through my job, my hobbies, or my free time, I’ll continue looking for ways to support my community.

One of the personal achievements I’m most proud of is making the varsity football team while keeping up with my academics during high school. It took a lot of hard work, time management, and dedication to be successful in both, but it taught me lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Playing football has been a passion of mine for years. When I first joined the team, I started out on junior varsity, and I was determined to earn a spot on the varsity team. I put in extra hours after practice, worked on my strength and skills during the off-season, and stayed focused even when things got tough. When I finally made the varsity team, it felt like all that effort paid off. But the achievement wasn’t just about the sport—it was also about proving to myself that I could reach a goal I set through hard work and consistency. Football also allowed me to participate in community activities such as Habitat for Humanity, cleaning up nearby neighborhoods with teammates, as well as act as a mentor for community youth sport events. At the same time, I knew that doing well in school was just as important. I’ve always been interested in computers and technology, and I plan to major in computer engineering in college as I had completed engineering courses throughout my freshmen to senior year in high school. That meant I had to stay focused in class, complete my assignments, and study, even when I was tired from a long day of football practice. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to keep my grades up while being fully committed to my team. That experience helped me develop strong time management skills and showed me how to balance multiple responsibilities. Making the varsity team and staying on top of my schoolwork also helped me grow as a person. I became more disciplined, learned how to manage stress, and built confidence in myself. I also learned how to work well with others and support my teammates, which has made me a better communicator and leader. This achievement has impacted my life by preparing me for college and my future career. I know that computer engineering will come with its own challenges, but I’m confident that the skills I’ve learned through football and academics will help me succeed. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, and I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned into the next chapter of my life.

My name is Marvin Wells Jr., and I’ve always been curious about how technology works. From video games to mobile apps, I enjoy learning what goes on behind the scenes to make these tools and experiences come to life. That curiosity led me to study computer science, a field where I can combine creativity, logic, and problem-solving to build things that make life better. One of the biggest inspirations for my interest in computer science is my mother. She earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and has built a career in the tech field. Seeing how she uses her knowledge to solve problems and support others made me realize that this field is about more than just computers—it’s about helping people and creating change. Another major influence on my journey has been my love for video games and game design. As a gamer, I’ve always enjoyed playing, but I became even more interested in how games are made. In my free time, I explore game engines, learn simple coding, and experiment with design ideas. I find joy in the creative and technical process of game development, and I hope to one day work in software or game development, especially in areas like virtual reality or artificial intelligence. These are exciting fields where imagination meets innovation, and I want to be a part of building the future of interactive technology. What inspires me most about computer science is that it never stops evolving. There’s always something new to learn or build. I want to be part of a field where I can keep growing and make a difference through innovation. Whether it’s developing apps that help people in their daily lives or creating educational games that teach important skills, I want to use my talents to help others. Studying computer science gives me the chance to combine everything I’m passionate about—technology, creativity, problem-solving, and service. I’m motivated by the idea that I can help shape the future with the work I do. I know the road ahead won’t be easy, but I’m ready to put in the work, just like I’ve done on the football field and in the classroom. With support from this scholarship, I’ll be able to focus more on my education and take advantage of opportunities to grow my skills. I hope to make the most of college, contribute to the tech field, and one day give back by helping others achieve their goals, just like my mother has inspired me.
