Many people decide from the beginning that college is a waste of time. They also believe that they will not learn anything new. I know this because when I was at my community college some of my peers told me that. They would mention how the class we are taking is pointless and how no new knowledge has been learned. Sometimes it can be very hard to change someone's opinion about viewing something from a different perspective. I would convince a peer to attend college by telling them it is a way to invest in yourself. Many people view college as losing money. In reality, it is a way to invest in your future. Yes, you may be losing money in the beginning, but in the long run, you will make the money back and more. I would let them know that there are scholarships they can apply for. As well as letting them know that they can always talk to their advisor about any questions or concerns that they may have regarding the cost of school. I would let them know how there are different options for completing a degree. For instance, if they need to work they can work a part-time job and attend school part-time as well. I think it would be important to let them know that it is hard to go to school full time and also work a job. I would let them know that I tried working and going to school at the same time, but it did not work for me. I think it is important to also write out a pro and con list. This helps them compare and contrast the good and the bad. Whether they are comparing working and schooling or something else this will help them see what potentially is best for them in the current moment. College is hard, but I would let them know it is very doable. By having a good support system they will be able to accomplish college. These would be some of the things that I would tell a peer who does not want to attend college.
