I am passionate about saving our world through data. There is currently a huge global crisis occurring and I am particularly drawn to the role that corals play in the survival of our planet. I am determined to find a way to save our coral reefs through my passion of data science and analysis. I believe there are ways we could create technology to help limit/prevent or quickly resolve the degradation of coral reefs. I am interested in using previously researched and proven techniques to improving the lives of corals while also collecting data on these corals to better protect them. I have formulated the idea of using a buoy to accomplish these goals. There is extensive research on how to draw schools of fish to corals. Healthy corals make sounds desirable to fish and there have been experiments done to prove that fish are attracted to man-made sounds that resemble these healthy corals even if the actual coral they are visiting is dying. They will also stay at this coral and make their home at the coral because they believe the coral is healthy. This allows for their mutually beneficial relationship to begin again. The fish will benefit from the food and habitat from the corals and the corals benefit from the grazing of fish for reproductive success and mitigating disease. Fish are also attracted to specific kinds of light. I believe it could be beneficial to encompass these two aspects into a buoy that could analyze corals on a real-time basis and collect data on the water health and appearance of the corals being observed. This buoy would then serve the purpose of attracting necessary fish to the corals while also collecting invaluable data on these corals to help us better understand how to protect them and continue allowing them to thrive. I would also incorporate data analysis tools into this technology that could automate the process of taking action once it becomes clear what the most important areas of focus are when it comes to the health of the coral reefs. I would want this technology to be streamlined and as automated as possible to encourage efficiency and quick solutions should corals start to die. This issue is extremely important as humans cannot live without water. Our oceans regulate our climate and provide sanctuary to so many vital aquatic animals that benefit the lives of humans through nutrition and oceanic maintenance. It is time we start protecting the ocean like our lives depend on it, because they do.
