My life goal is to graduate from college and build a career in health sciences where I can help improve people’s health and overall well-being. I am most passionate about nutrition science and learning how the body works because I want to use that knowledge to make better choices for myself and help others do the same. As a 17-year-old student preparing for college, I am motivated to work hard and take advantage of every opportunity to grow academically and personally. I believe I am a great candidate because I stay committed to my education, take challenging courses, participate in dual enrollment, and stay involved in leadership, mentoring, and athletics.       I am a motivated high school student who is deeply committed to education, leadership, and service. Growing up, I learned early that success is not guaranteed, but earned through hard work, perseverance, and support from others. Because of this, I have made it a priority to stay involved in my community and give back whenever possible. Programs such as Life Pieces to Masterpieces have played a major role in shaping my values and helping me grow into a responsible leader and mentor. My community involvement centers around mentoring younger students and creating safe spaces where they can learn and grow. As a Junior Mentor, I help guide youth academically and personally by offering encouragement, tutoring support, and positive reinforcement. I focus on teaching respect, discipline, and accountability while reminding students that their choices today shape their future. Being someone younger students can look up to has taught me patience, empathy, and strong communication skills. It also motivates me to continue serving my community in meaningful ways. As I prepare to enter higher education, I face significant financial challenges. I am a low-income student whose mother is currently battling cancer, which has placed a heavy financial and emotional strain on my family. Medical bills, transportation costs, and daily living expenses have made it difficult to save for college. Despite these obstacles, I remain determined to pursue my education because I understand that earning a degree is one of the most powerful ways to create long-term stability for myself and my family. Financial assistance would not only help cover tuition and educational expenses, but also allow me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about whether I can afford basic necessities such as textbooks, housing, and meals. Keeping children and youth safe in my community, both in person and online, is also an important part of my involvement. In face-to-face settings, I work to prevent bullying by promoting respect, inclusion, and open communication. I encourage students to speak up when they see harmful behavior and to support one another instead of remaining silent. As a mentor, I make it a priority to listen to youth concerns and provide guidance when conflicts arise. By setting a positive example and creating a welcoming environment, I help reduce situations where bullying can occur. Online safety is equally important in today’s digital world. I educate younger students about responsible social media use, privacy settings, and the importance of thinking before posting or sharing content. I remind them that words shared online can have lasting effects and encourage them to treat others with the same respect they would show in person. When cyberbullying occurs, I stress the importance of reporting harmful behavior to trusted adults and using platform safety tools instead of responding with negativity. These conversations help students feel empowered to protect themselves and others. Overall, my experiences have taught me the importance of service, resilience, and leadership. Despite financial hardship and personal challenges, including my mother’s illness, I continue to stay focused on my goals and committed to helping others. I plan to carry these values into college and beyond by continuing to mentor youth and eventually creating programs that provide guidance and opportunity for underserved communities. Through these experiences, I have learned the value of discipline, responsibility, and service, all of which continue to guide my goals and daily actions. What makes my involvement especially meaningful is that I began as a young participant who needed guidance and encouragement.       When my mom was diagnosed with stage four cancer, my life changed overnight. One day I was focused on school, sports, and friends, and the next I was sitting in hospital rooms and worrying about things no teenager should have to think about. It was one of the hardest moments I have ever faced. At first, everything felt overwhelming. I was tired, stressed, and emotionally drained. But instead of letting this situation break me, I decided to let it push me to become stronger. Balancing school and family responsibilities was not easy. There were days when I struggled to concentrate in class because my mind was on my mom. Some nights I stayed up late trying to finish homework after long days. I questioned myself more than once and wondered if I could really handle everything. What helped me keep going was watching my mom fight through every treatment with strength and determination. Seeing her refuse to give up reminded me that I could not give up either. I started to see school as more than just assignments and grades. It became a way for me to build a better future and make her proud. During this time, programs like Rec Zone and Life Pieces to Master Pieces became important parts of my life. At Rec Zone, I helped create a safe space for students to relax, be creative, and feel supported after school. Being there for others helped take my mind off my own stress and gave me a sense of purpose. Through Life Pieces to Master Pieces, I became a junior mentor and worked with younger students who were dealing with their own challenges. Helping them express themselves and grow made me realize that even when you are struggling, you can still make a positive impact. I also challenged myself academically by taking college courses through dual enrollment. Taking college classes while still in high school was tough. The workload was heavier, the expectations were higher, and time management became very important. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, but every assignment I completed and every class I passed showed me that I was capable of more than I thought. These experiences taught me discipline and responsibility, and they helped prepare me for the future. Going through this adversity changed me. I became more mature, more patient, and more focused on my goals. I learned that strength does not mean pretending everything is okay. It means continuing to show up even when things are hard. I also learned that leadership is about helping others, not just helping yourself. For anyone facing a similar situation, my advice is to not give up on yourself. It is okay to ask for help and lean on others. Stay connected to positive people and programs that support you. Most importantly, remember that your situation does not define who you are or what you can become. As I get ready for college, I carry these lessons with me. My mom’s fight, my experiences in mentoring, and the challenges I faced in school have shaped who I am today. No matter what comes next, I know I have the strength and determination to keep moving forward.

      I am a 17-year-old student at HD Woodson High School who is focused on growing academically, personally, and as a leader in my community. I work hard to balance my school responsibilities with extracurricular activities and service programs that help shape my character. As an honor roll student and dual enrollment participant at UDC Community College, I have learned how to manage my time, stay organized, and challenge myself with college-level coursework. These experiences have prepared me for the next stage of my education. One of my biggest interests is health and wellness, especially nutrition science. I enjoy learning how the body works and how daily habits affect long-term health. One of the main reasons I take interest in nutrition science is because my mom was diagnosed with stage four cancer. I wondered if her nutrition played a part in her diagnosis and I started to research if there were any way I could help her beat this by changing her nutrition. I knew I had to try to help save my mom. I was determined to get my mom in better health. This interest has motivated me to take better care of myself and develop goals related to helping others improve their well-being. I also enjoy visiting museums because they allow me to learn in interactive ways and expand my understanding of history, culture, and science. Outside of the classroom, I stay involved in programs that build leadership and teamwork. I am a junior mentor with Life Pieces to Master Pieces, where I support younger students and help create a positive learning environment. This role has taught me responsibility, patience, and communication. I am also a member of my school’s basketball team, which has helped me develop discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Through after-school programs, I have explored creativity, fitness, and leadership while giving academic support to my peers. After high school, I plan to attend college and pursue a degree in health-related sciences with a focus on nutrition and wellness. My goal is to work in healthcare or community wellness programs where I can educate others about healthy lifestyles and disease prevention. I want to use my education to make a real difference by helping people make better choices and improve their quality of life. If I had the opportunity to start my own charity, its mission would be to promote health education and wellness access in underserved communities. The organization would serve students, families, and individuals who may not have access to reliable health resources. Volunteers would help organize health workshops, lead fitness activities, distribute wellness materials, and mentor younger students. Through this charity, I would aim to create healthier communities by empowering people with knowledge, support, and encouragement.
