Hi, I'm Marlowe Miller, a high school senior. I love rock climbing and all things math-related! I attend Cheltenham High School in PA, but am currently at the local community college taking dual enrollment classes. I am looking forward to a degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering!

    Fresh from virtual Covid school, having moved to Cheltenham during the pandemic, I hardly knew anyone at Cheltenham High School. Sure, I had a few middle school friends, but because of the way the school was set up, I had only set eyes on a third of my grade… and that was just my grade. As I nervously made my way through the labyrinthine halls, searching for my rooms and for my locker, I was amazed at how many strangers offered to help. “Don’t worry about the hallways,” one girl said. “You’ll get used to it. It’s just a box.” After hearing that, I began to notice that, indeed, the school’s halls ran in a big square, not complicated in the slightest. Another girl showed me how to use my locker, and a third person explained how to access and scan into the lunchroom. These seemingly daunting tasks became so obvious through their guidance that, later, I laughed while telling my parents how I, their smart, capable daughter, had struggled to turn a dial and punch in my student code. Deep in the wild unknown of high school, I found solace in the familiar, comforting arms of math class—despite the change of scenery, faces, and teachers, math had not changed, and was only getting more interesting as I ventured into Algebra II and Geometry. Once I had my bearings back, I figured it was time to seek out the school’s math club. I was disappointed to learn that it did not exist! The math teachers at Cheltenham not only instructed me, but also led me along. One teacher, who ran a club that I frequented, offered to sponsor a math club, and the club was born. Despite the difficulty in getting the club running, my friends and peers began pouring into the club, and I found a community of people who love math as much as I do. Together we solved AMC problems and discussed new mathematical discoveries and advancements. Many meetings and competitions later, CHS Math Club just celebrated its fourth Pi Day! I’ve never forgotten the way my fellow students and my freshman teachers assisted me through the transition from the comfortable structure of middle and virtual school to the uncharted territory of Cheltenham High School. After a successful freshman year, I resolved to help incoming freshmen the way I had been helped. Along with guiding them through the discomfort of their first weeks, I recruited several incoming freshmen to Math Club. Now, in my senior year, Math Club has a range of members, all of whom love math, and all of whom agree that finding their place in high school started with the kindness and guidance of others.
