My name is Marlene Arizaga Rodriguez and I am currently a Freshman at Immaculata University. Besides being a full-time student I also work at a after-school program at a Catholic school with children from pre-k to 6th grade. I also volunteer as an assistant preparing children at my church to do their first communion. I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching because I want to help children become the best they can be. I was an English Language Learner (ELL) student for most of my life and now I wish to help those students who are going through the English learning path. Seeing that most high-paying jobs in America require the knowledge of English, all of the incoming children from foreign countries must learn it so they can have a bright future. In the past, I had the opportunity to volunteer to help children with their ELL homework from grades k-6. It was during that time that I discovered my passion for teaching specifically teaching English to non-English speakers. During that school year, I found it fascinating how they were able to greatly improve their reading, writing, and speaking ability in such a hard language. Some children expressed their desire to go to college in the future and gain a degree but felt like it was a lucid dream due to their inability to communicate in English. After working on their communication skills they appeared to be much more comfortable and did not see their dream as unreachable. Being able to help them gain that skill and confidence marked me because it allowed me to discover what I wanted to do as a career. As someone who was also in that situation, I think it was easier for the students to relate to me and vice versa. As a foreigner, I think having a teacher who you can relate to and trust with your struggles is important. I wish to become a teacher that will give that comfort and be a safe place for my future students so that they always remember me fondly. I wish to be the person who is there to cheer them on whenever they feel like giving up. I had a teacher whom I knew I could always count on. Her name was Mrs. Olski and to this day I hold her near and dear to my heart. I hope to one day impact children as much as she did to me so that, that feeling can be passed down to other generations of ELL students. That way every child in the world will feel like they are worthy of getting any degree they want regardless of having language struggles.
