The day we got into the car accident we were going in the freeway when all of a sudden an 18 wheeler hit us. My name is Marlen Velazquez the name Marlen means "Star of the sea". Our culture is catholic we believe in god but for us, we have our specific saint, my mother's saint was "San Martin De Pores". The saint that is specific for my mother holds a place in her heart, when my mother found out she would possibly not have the ability to have a child she was heartbroken. In the end, my mother never gave up so she made a promise to "San Martin De Pores" that if she would have a child then that child would be named after them. If the child was a boy it would be Martin If it was a girl It would be Marlen the name Martin originated from her saint and the name Marlen "Mar" from Martin and "Len" is a short abbreviation for Elena. Elena originated from my mother's godmother whom my mother looked up to and sadly when my mother fell pregnant she was happy but unfortunately, my mother had a miscarriage. Later on, she fell pregnant again and this time with me, my mother was super careful during her pregnancy, when I was born my family member including my aunt and uncles wanted to name me a different kinds of names: Belen, Elena, Marlene, Etc. However, my mother who already promised her saint that the baby would be named after him named me Marlen the name that would be mine for only me specifically. When my mother told me the story about how she came to name me Marlen it was very heartwarming because I was the first girl and the oldest sibling to be born and I was special to her because I was the first child and the only child she think she would have.
