Bio

My name is MarKee , and I’m a Black male dental student at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM). I’m deeply committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within dentistry and beyond. From helping my grandmother launch a community food bank to organizing oral health fairs in underserved neighborhoods, service has always been central to who I am. At BUGSDM, I lead initiatives that support underrepresented students, including wellness sessions through SNDA to promote mental health and peer mentorship. I believe that culturally competent care is critical in building trust with diverse patient populations, and I advocate for this through every facet of my work. My passion for dismantling systemic barriers, mentoring the next generation, and pushing for meaningful change drives me to lead with purpose and empathy. I plan to pursue a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where I can continue to serve communities in need and advocate for equity in surgical specialties. Bold.org provides the opportunity for students like me to grow and give back, and I’m proud to be part of that mission.

Nearly twenty years ago, my grandmother and I started a food bank in our neighborhood. What began as a small gesture of compassion became a cornerstone of support for countless families, offering nourishment, dignity, and hope. That early experience taught me that service is not about how much you have, but how much you’re willing to give. It also planted in me a lifelong commitment to community—a commitment that’s shaped every step of my journey toward becoming a healthcare professional. As a Black male and first-generation college graduate, I’ve faced a number of barriers that made the path to dental school particularly steep. I entered academic spaces where I was often the only one who looked like me, constantly battling the weight of imposter syndrome while trying to honor the sacrifices made to get me there. I also carried the burden of financial strain. My grandmother—once my strongest financial supporter—has battled cancer not once, but twice. Her illnesses have taken a toll, and she’s no longer able to contribute as she did in the past. Watching her fight for her life while still wanting to provide for mine has been heartbreaking. Her resilience inspires me every day, and I’m determined to honor her legacy by pushing forward. Despite these personal challenges, I’ve remained committed to academic excellence and leadership. I currently hold a 3.6 GPA at Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine and serve as a leader in our Student National Dental Association (SNDA) chapter. Under my leadership, we’ve increased membership by 190% and revenue by 250% through strategic outreach, meaningful partnerships, and programming that centers the lived experiences of students of color. One of the initiatives I’m most proud of is the launch of monthly wellness and mentorship sessions for first-year students. These sessions offer space for students to process not only academic stress, but also the personal and cultural challenges that often go unspoken in professional environments. Outside of school, I stay connected to the community through oral health education and service in Roxbury. I know from experience that access and representation matter—patients are more likely to trust and return to care when they feel seen, respected, and understood. My work in underserved neighborhoods is not just about dentistry—it’s about equity and restoring trust in a system that has too often failed marginalized populations. This scholarship would make a profound difference in my life. It would ease the financial weight that has only grown heavier since my grandmother’s illness, allowing me to invest more fully in my education, clinical training, and community work. More than that, it would affirm that the work I’ve done—and the obstacles I’ve overcome—matter. My story is not one of perfection, but of perseverance. It’s a story rooted in service, shaped by hardship, and propelled by purpose. With your support, I will continue to rise—not just for myself, but for every young person who needs to see that someone like them can lead, heal, and thrive.
