New Jersey New York First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college graduate means breaking a cycle and setting a new standard for my family and future generations. I am 25 years old, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, to parents who immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in search of better opportunities. Growing up, I watched my parents work tirelessly, often in physically demanding jobs, to provide stability and keep our household moving forward. Although they did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education themselves, they instilled in me the belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for upward mobility. Earning a college degree would represent the fulfillment of their sacrifices and the realization of a dream that extends beyond myself.
As a first-generation American, navigating the education system was not always straightforward. There were moments of uncertainty where I had to learn processes on my own, from understanding college expectations to balancing academic responsibilities with real-world obligations. These challenges pushed me to become independent, resilient, and self-motivated. Completing my education would not only symbolize personal achievement, but also prove that determination and perseverance can overcome limited access to guidance or resources. It would allow me to serve as an example for younger family members and others in my community who may feel that higher education is out of reach.
My extracurricular activities and responsibilities outside the classroom have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Growing up in Brooklyn taught me the importance of adaptability and accountability. Whether through working to support myself and my family, participating in community-based activities, or staying committed to structured routines, I learned how to manage time, communicate effectively, and remain disciplined under pressure. These experiences reinforced the value of showing up consistently, taking initiative, and following through on commitments—skills that have translated directly into my academic journey.
In addition, being involved in activities that required teamwork and responsibility helped me understand the importance of collaboration and leadership. I learned how to listen, take constructive feedback, and contribute positively to group efforts. These experiences strengthened my confidence and helped me develop a strong work ethic. They also taught me that success is rarely achieved alone and that supporting others is just as important as personal progress.
Becoming a first-generation college graduate would open doors not only for my own career, but also for my ability to give back. It would provide me with the knowledge, stability, and confidence to uplift my family and community. My background, experiences, and extracurricular involvement have shaped me into someone who values perseverance, responsibility, and growth. Completing my education would be a defining milestone—one that honors my parents’ journey, reflects my own determination, and sets the foundation for a future built on purpose and progress.
Ironworkers Scholarship in Memory of Ron V. Howell Sr.
At 25 years old, I am at a point in my life where I am focused on building a stable, long-term career rooted in hard work and purpose. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I was surrounded by constant construction and development, and I saw firsthand how ironworkers help shape the city’s skyline. As the child of Jamaican immigrants and a first-generation American, I was raised with strong values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. My parents came to this country seeking opportunity through honest labor, and their sacrifices inspire me to pursue a career that rewards dedication, skill, and pride in one’s work. Joining the Ironworkers Union represents that path for me.
I want to join the Ironworkers Union because it stands for brotherhood, professionalism, and excellence in the skilled trades. The union offers more than employment—it provides structured training, mentorship, and a clear career path. I am eager to learn from experienced ironworkers who understand the importance of safety, precision, and teamwork. Working in a trade that demands both physical strength and mental focus appeals to me, and I respect the union’s commitment to ensuring that every worker is properly trained and protected on the job. Being part of an organization that prioritizes worker safety and growth is essential to me.
The Ironworkers Union will benefit me by giving me the opportunity to develop valuable, transferable skills while earning a living wage. Through apprenticeship programs and ongoing education, I will gain hands-on experience that allows me to grow professionally and personally. Coming from a working-class immigrant household, I understand the importance of financial stability and long-term planning. The union’s benefits, training, and support system provide the foundation needed to build a secure future for myself and eventually give back to my family and community.
In return, I bring strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn to the Ironworkers Union. I understand that ironwork is demanding and requires discipline, accountability, and respect for the chain of command. I take pride in showing up on time, staying focused, and doing my job to the best of my ability. I work well as part of a team and understand that trust and communication are critical on job sites where safety is non-negotiable.
As a first-generation American, I also bring appreciation and gratitude for the opportunities available through organized labor. I do not take this opportunity lightly. I am committed to representing the Ironworkers Union with integrity and professionalism, both on and off the job. Over time, I hope to become a skilled journeyman who not only contributes high-quality work, but also serves as a positive example for future apprentices.
Joining the Ironworkers Union would allow me to honor my parents’ sacrifices, build a meaningful career, and help construct the city I call home. I am ready to work hard, learn continuously, and contribute to the strength and legacy of the Ironworkers.
Track to the Trades
WinnerFrom a young age, I have been inspired by my father’s journey as an immigrant who came to this country with very little but built a life for our family through hard work and perseverance. He entered the electrical trade with determination, teaching himself not only the technical skills required but also the resilience to succeed in a new environment. Watching him provide for us, while overcoming the challenges of language, culture, and financial hardship, instilled in me a deep respect for the trades and the opportunities they create. His path has motivated me to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career as an electrician.
My short-term goal is to become a certified electrician. I want to master the technical skills of the trade, build a strong foundation of knowledge, and demonstrate to my family that their sacrifices were worth it. Achieving certification is not only a personal milestone but also a symbol of the pride I feel in carrying forward my father’s legacy. As a 24-year-old minority student, I know that entering the trades will not only allow me to support myself but will also create stability for my growing family. With a child on the way, the responsibility I feel to succeed has only grown stronger. I want my child to look at me with the same pride and respect that I have for my own father.
Looking further ahead, my long-term goal is to start a construction company with my brothers. Each of us has chosen a different path within the construction industry: I will be the electrician, my older brother is pursuing architecture, and my younger brother is training in HVAC. Together, we share a dream of building a family-owned company that not only provides quality services but also gives back to our community. We want to create opportunities for others, especially young people from minority backgrounds, who may not have considered the trades as a career path. By combining our skills, we hope to establish a business that represents unity, perseverance, and the belief that hard work can transform lives.
This scholarship will make a meaningful difference in helping me achieve these goals. At the moment, I live paycheck to paycheck, balancing the financial demands of school and rent while preparing for the arrival of my first child. The cost of tuition, tools, and training programs creates a heavy burden, and there are times when the stress feels overwhelming. Receiving this scholarship would reduce that financial pressure, allowing me to focus more fully on my education and training. It would give me the stability I need to continue pursuing my dream, knowing that I can invest my energy into becoming the best electrician I can be.
Beyond the financial relief, this scholarship would serve as an affirmation of my efforts and commitment. It would represent the belief that someone is willing to invest in my future and in the future of my family. That encouragement matters deeply, especially when the challenges of balancing school, work, and family responsibilities feel daunting. It would remind me that my goals are not only possible but worth striving for.
In the trades, every project begins with a strong foundation, and this scholarship would be a cornerstone in mine. It would allow me to continue building toward my certification, my career, and ultimately the family business my brothers and I have dreamed of creating. Most importantly, it would allow me to honor the sacrifices of my father, provide for my child, and inspire others to believe in the power of hard work and perseverance.
I am determined to succeed not only for myself but for my family and my community. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to take the next step toward becoming a certified electrician and, one day, a business owner who creates opportunities for others. I am grateful for your consideration and for the possibility of continuing my journey with your support.
