Bio

My name is Mariya Kodjanian, and I am a 20-year-old Armenian American and junior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, majoring in Hospitality Management. I am working toward my dream of becoming a luxury wedding and event planner, where I can combine creativity, culture, and precision to design unforgettable experiences. I was raised by immigrant parents who taught me the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and ambition. Their journey motivates me every day to chase my goals with passion and purpose. As an Armenian woman, I am proud of my heritage and deeply committed to showing that it is possible to be both culturally rooted and fiercely independent. I want to prove that young women like me can become successful business owners, leaders, and visionaries in any industry they choose. I have been immersed in hospitality for over four years, gaining hands-on experience that has shaped my work ethic and sharpened my skills. I also run my own floral design business from home, which allows me to bring beauty to life through custom arrangements. For the past seven years, I’ve served on my church’s board, where I’ve taken on leadership roles and stayed connected to my community and culture. I am passionate, focused, and determined to make an impact. Whether I’m planning a celebration, arranging flowers, or studying late into the night, I give everything my full heart and energy. I want to inspire other young women, especially from immigrant and ethnic backgrounds, to dream boldly and build lives they’re proud of.

Growing up in the Family Restaurant Business Scholarship
Some of my earliest memories are not from playgrounds or classrooms, but from my family's restaurant. I remember standing behind the counter of my father's Mediterranean restaurant, watching customers come and go, smelling fresh food being prepared, and seeing the people I loved work tirelessly from sunrise until long after sunset. At a young age, I did not fully understand the sacrifices being made around me. Looking back now, I realize that those moments shaped who I am and inspired the path I hope to pursue in the hospitality industry. My parents are immigrants from Armenia who came to the United States to build a better life. They started with very little and worked relentlessly to create opportunities for my siblings and me. Their journey was not easy. Every accomplishment was earned through determination, resilience, and countless hours of hard work. What impacted me most was witnessing the dedication of my entire family. My father poured his blood, sweat, and tears into the restaurant every day. He carried the weight of ensuring the business succeeded while also providing for our family. My grandparents stood beside him, contributing their own time and energy to help make the restaurant thrive. There were no shortcuts. Success came from long hours, hard work, and an unwavering belief in what they were building together. Watching my family work toward a common goal taught me lessons that no classroom ever could. I learned the value of commitment, teamwork, and perseverance. More importantly, I learned that hospitality is about much more than serving food. It is about creating a place where people feel welcomed, cared for, and connected. I watched customers become regulars and regulars become friends. I saw how a simple meal could bring families together, celebrate milestones, and create lasting memories. Those experiences inspired my passion for hospitality and my desire to make a difference in people's lives. Today, I am pursuing opportunities within the hospitality industry because I want to create the same sense of connection and belonging that my family provided through their restaurant. Whether through restaurants, events, or other hospitality experiences, I want my work to have a positive impact on others. If given the opportunity to improve the restaurant industry, I would focus on two important changes. First, I would prioritize better support for employees through mental health resources, flexible scheduling, and stronger work-life balance initiatives. Restaurant workers often dedicate countless hours to serving others, and they deserve environments that support their well-being. Second, I would encourage restaurants to invest more in career development and mentorship programs. Many talented employees enter the industry with passion but lack guidance on how to grow professionally. By creating clear pathways for advancement, restaurants can empower employees to build meaningful, long-term careers. My family's restaurant taught me that hospitality is built on hard work, sacrifice, and genuine care for others. Their example continues to inspire me every day. As I pursue my future in hospitality, I hope to honor their legacy by creating experiences that bring people together and by helping shape an industry that values both its guests and the people who make those experiences possible.

I grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, having called it home since I was three years old. Most people see Las Vegas as a city of bright lights and entertainment, but for me, it has been a place that taught me the value of hospitality, connection, and creating memorable experiences. Living in a city that welcomes millions of visitors every year has inspired my passion for making people feel valued, comfortable, and celebrated! Through hospitality, I hope to make a positive impact on the world by creating meaningful experiences that bring people together and leave lasting impressions. From a young age, I dreamed of becoming a wedding planner. I have always been drawn to the joy of bringing people together to celebrate life's most important moments. Weddings represent love, family, and connection, and the opportunity to help create such meaningful memories has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. However, my passion for hospitality extends far beyond wedding planning. What truly excites me is any role that allows me to interact with people, build relationships, and contribute to unforgettable experiences. Today, I work at Durango Casino & Resort, where I have been able to experience the hospitality industry firsthand. I love the lively environment and the energy that comes from serving guests from diverse backgrounds. Every interaction gives me the opportunity to brighten someone's day, whether through excellent service, a welcoming attitude, or simply making them feel appreciated. Working in this environment has reinforced my belief that hospitality is about much more than providing a service, it is about creating genuine human connections. In addition to my current role, I have also worked in the restaurant industry, which further strengthened my communication skills and passion for customer service. These experiences have taught me how important empathy, adaptability, and teamwork are in creating positive experiences for others. They have also shown me that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on someone's day. As I pursue my education and future career, I hope to use my passion for hospitality to create environments where people feel welcomed, celebrated, and connected. Whether I am planning weddings, managing events, working in resorts, or exploring new opportunities within the industry, my goal remains the same: to bring people together and make a positive difference through meaningful human interaction. I believe hospitality has the power to create joy, foster connection, and leave lasting memories, and I am excited to dedicate my future to that mission.
    GIAN Scholarship
Ever since I was a little girl watching my grandmother transform blank spaces into magical weddings, I knew I was born to bring people’s dreams to life. I am an Armenian American and the proud daughter of immigrant parents who taught me that success is earned through hard work, resilience, and unwavering ambition. Growing up in a tight-knit, culturally rich household, I learned to embrace tradition while dreaming of innovation. My grandmother, a wedding planner in our community, was the first woman I saw lead with elegance, strength, and creativity. She showed me that event planning was not just about organizing a party, it was about creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences that leave a permanent mark on people’s hearts. I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps and take her legacy even further. I am passionate about event planning because it blends everything I love, creativity, connection, culture, and design. Weddings, in particular, are deeply emotional events that deserve to be handled with care, intention, and beauty. I want to become a luxurious wedding planner who creates breathtaking, high-end experiences while building a brand that represents strength, independence, and cultural pride. Every detail, from floral arrangements to music selection to guest experiences, tells a story. I want my clients to feel like their love is honored in the most beautiful, personalized way imaginable. As a young Armenian woman, I have often felt the tension between cultural expectations and modern ambition. Many young women in my community grow up without seeing examples of female entrepreneurs who look like them. I want to change that. I want to show that it is possible to be an Armenian woman and own a successful, independent business. I want to inspire others to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue careers fueled by passion and purpose. Through formal education in event planning and project leadership, I will gain the skills and confidence I need to manage complex events, lead diverse teams, and build an impactful business. I want to learn how to scale an event company, manage budgets efficiently, lead with integrity, and design experiences that are both luxurious and meaningful. I also plan to integrate sustainable practices into my business, showing that elegance and environmental responsibility can coexist. Long-term, I hope to mentor young women in my community, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, and provide opportunities for them to intern, learn, and grow. I want to create a brand that is known not only for beautiful weddings, but also for empowering women and celebrating cultural roots. My dream is to open a high-end wedding agency that reflects the perfect balance between tradition and modern luxury, a place where every client, regardless of background, feels understood, celebrated, and transformed. Receiving this scholarship would not just help me further my education, it would help me turn a lifelong dream into a legacy. I’m ready to prove that with vision, heart, and hard work, anything is possible.

Over the next five years, I will use my passion for luxury wedding planning to create a positive environmental impact in both my local and global communities. While weddings are often seen as extravagant celebrations, I believe they can also serve as powerful statements of sustainability, beauty, and responsibility. My goal is to show that luxury and environmental consciousness can coexist in the most elegant and memorable ways. As a future wedding planner, I will design high-end events that are both breathtaking and environmentally thoughtful. I will collaborate with florists who use locally grown, seasonal flowers and repurpose arrangements after events to avoid waste. I will work with caterers who prioritize organic and locally sourced ingredients, and I will implement composting and donation strategies for leftover food. When selecting venues, I will favor those with green certifications, energy-efficient practices, and a commitment to sustainability. The wedding industry has a significant carbon footprint, from travel emissions to fast fashion and single-use decor. I plan to offer clients refined and sustainable alternatives like digital invitations, vintage furniture rentals, and timeless décor that can be reused or repurposed. I will partner with ethical designers who create eco-friendly bridalwear and encourage couples to offset their carbon footprint, especially for destination weddings. I want my clients to know that celebrating their love can also be a way of showing love to the planet. On a local level, I will launch a program called “Green Glam,” a workshop series that teaches aspiring planners how to incorporate sustainability into event design without sacrificing luxury or style. Through community outreach, styled shoots, and hands-on training, I will empower others in the industry to prioritize environmental responsibility in their careers. Globally, I aspire to build a wedding planning brand that becomes known for sustainable luxury. By sharing real examples, behind-the-scenes content, and expert tips through social media and publications, I will influence how weddings are planned around the world. I want couples and planners everywhere to see that beauty and sustainability can enhance each other. To me, luxury is not about waste or excess. True luxury is thoughtful, elegant, and meaningful. A wedding should reflect love in all forms: for one another, for the experience, and for the planet. This scholarship will give me the foundation I need to build a career that transforms the wedding industry and leaves behind a legacy of beauty, care, and purpose. I dream of being an impactful planner, and this would set me in the right direction!
