Hello, my name is Marissa Smith.
It has been a lifelong ambition and dream of mine to become a veterinarian. Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of being surrounded by animals, sick and well, at all times of the day. I embraced every aspect of the job (including the ugly aspects like surgery or death) even at such an early age because I had always felt like it was the job I was put on the Earth to do. As I got older, it excited me more and more to speak about my career choice to others and to gain a better understanding of what it would be like to become a veterinarian. During my Junior year of high school, I conducted a research project in my College Ethics class at St. Petersburg College about veterinary medicine. I quickly found that I was extremely interested in animal radiology, nutrition, and animal behavior. Out of those three, I am the most interested in animal radiology.
Overall, I am passionate about many things, including music and religion. I have been a musician since about my first grade year of school, and I recently became a member of the St. Petersburg Community Band as a second-chair trombonist. I find that if I truly love something, I stick with it, even if I struggle along the way. But no matter how much I struggle, I find it rewarding to see my hard work pay off at the end of the day.
Lastly, I would describe myself as caring, outgoing, kind, loyal, intelligent, and ready to learn whenever needed. I hope to reach all of my goals some day, and I will work hard every day until I do so.

I have had a drive to become a veterinarian for as long as I can remember. This passion quickly became backed by various personal experiences that drove me to make an impact in current veterinary medicine practices. One such experience was losing my childhood dog to cancer. Watching her struggle to survive and eventually lose that fight was heartbreaking, but it ignited a passion and desire to improve the health and well-being of animals, as well as become an advocate for animals.
I also witnessed firsthand the injustices that animals face at the hands of ignorant owners. After being attacked by a dog that had previously been a part of a dog fighting ring, I decided to use my future platform as a well-educated veterinarian to improve animals' environments and spread knowledge about the proper treatment of animals.
I also interned at different and specialized veterinary practices, which allowed me to see the various aspects of animal medicine, both the good and bad sides of the practice. Despite it all, it opened my eyes to the field and made me fall more in love with veterinary medicine, even when it has its dark sides and imperfections.
Combined, these experiences and some background research, created my interest in animal radiology. My childhood dog remains a key motivator in this passion because I often wonder if her prognosis would have changed, or if she would have had a longer and healthier life if her disease had been caught earlier on through radiology. This field is not just a career choice for me; it's a mission driven by a desire to utilize my skills and knowledge to pave new paths to recovery for animals in need.
In addition, I also seek to relieve the stress and anxiety of daunting prognoses of the animal owners. As someone who has lost animals due to countless illnesses and reasons, I understand the pain of losing a beloved pet, and I seek to comfort both the animals and the owners alike.
In particular, my passion for combating animal cancer is at the center of my aspirations. With an expertise in radiology, I aim to make significant strides in the early detection and treatment of cancer, among other diseases. I also aim to use my platform as a veterinarian and animal radiologist to spread knowledge around the globe and make treatments as affordable as possible. Although lofty, my passions and journey are fueled by a genuine love for animals and a relentless pursuit of excellence in veterinary medicine. I am committed to making an impact in the lives of animals, ensuring they receive the compassionate care and medical advancements they deserve.

Have you ever dreamed of something for so long, you can almost taste it? Well, I can and do, so let me tell you about why I am pursuing a college degree.
For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I have always loved animals, and being surrounded by them, even sick, is what I feel is what I was put on this planet to do. However, animals did not always love me. When I was still in elementary school, a previously abused dog owned by my neighbors bit me in the face, taking with it a chunk of my lip and nose. While lying in a hospital bed, I realized that I could not blame the dog. How could I? It did not ask to be treated cruelly. I wanted to help it get better. I wanted to be the person to irradicate animal cruelty. And that is where I found my drive to continue, even in the face of the long and daunting road of education one in Veterinary medicine must follow.
To jumpstart my college career, I became a dual enrollment student at St. Petersburg College, where I have currently finished half of my AA Degree. In my junior year of high school, I conducted a research project about my desired career path. It was here where I discovered that I wish to be an animal radiologist. It excited me then, and it is exciting me even more to write about my desired career right now. As an animal radiologist, I will be a key factor in the improvement of the health of individual animals. Behind many diagnoses is the helping hand of animal radiologists, who find the main cause of sickness and disease. I want to be able to find and lead to the treatment of such illnesses, as well as become a voice in animal welfare.
As you know, animals do not have a voice, and cannot tell a veterinarian what is wrong or ailing them. They need a voice; they need a person who is experienced so that their recovery is as quick and painless as possible. I want, and am, going to become that voice, that helping hand.
Therefore, reason for me to pursue a college degree is simple; it is to fulfill a wish and desire planted in my mind since before I can remember. Without a college degree, I would never be able to reach my goals, which is my reason for starting college in my sophomore year of high school. I was aware that getting an early start would be beneficial, and I am proud of my progress in college thus far. I am driven and ready to learn, and I am so ready to get through school and get my college degree so that I can finally live my dream.
