I am working toward a career in cardiac sonography. I became interested in this field because I’ve always been drawn to healthcare and wanted a career where I could help people in a meaningful way. I like that being a sonographer means that you’re the doctor's eyes. You're supposed to catch if there’s anything wrong. I love how you get to help find out what could be wrong with a patient, so then you're a step closer to helping them get better. I’ve taken the time to shadow a sonographery to learn and grow my experience. I’m applying to programs but they are expensive. I have a strong work ethic and real motivation to succeed I hope my passion for this career makes me a great candidate.

I was the patient, and now I have a chance to become the one on the other side to help others. My name is Marissa Martinez, and I’m 20 years old. I was recently accepted into the Cardiac Ultrasound program at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in Fresno, California, where I’ll begin my studies this July. My dream of working in healthcare has been with me for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until a personal experience changed my life that I discovered exactly what I was meant to do.
When my mom was pregnant with me, she developed a DVT blood clot. It was a scary and uncertain time. Thanks to the work of skilled sonographers and doctors, both my mom and I survived. Her doctor actually gave me a 0% chance of making it, but here I am. My mom often shares that story with me, and I’ve always carried it close to my heart. That experience opened my eyes to how important sonographers are in saving lives, even before someone is born.
Later, in high school, I started dealing with my own medical issues while playing softball. I had to go through several tests, and one of them was an echocardiogram at Valley Children’s Hospital with Dr. Appleton. I remember watching the screen, totally fascinated by what I was seeing. From then on, I started going to my great-grandma’s doctor appointments, just so I could be around that world more. Eventually, I realized: I didn’t just want to watch, I wanted to be the one helping.
That’s when I decided to become a cardiac sonographer. In May 2025, I earned three associate degrees from Merced College. I’ll begin the online portion of the Gurnick program in July and the in person training in January 2026. Since January 2025, I’ve been shadowing an experienced cardiac sonographer with over 40 years in the field. It’s been one of the most valuable and inspiring experiences of my life. I’ve learned how to recognize Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, biatrial enlargement, abnormal wall motion, and calcified or regurgitant valves. I can notice if something abnormal is going on. I’ve also practiced scanning views like the parasternal long and short axis, apical 4-chamber views, and using tools like M-mode and Color Doppler to assess blood flow.
Shadowing has taught me that sonographers are like the eyes of the cardiologist. We’re often the first to spot signs of heart conditions, and our images help doctors make life-saving decisions. I’ve seen how important it is to stay calm, focused, and kind, especially with elderly or nervous patients. It’s not just about taking pictures. It’s about being a part of someone’s care, offering support, and helping them get answers when they need it most.
Once I graduate and pass my boards, I plan to begin working in a clinical setting, continuing to learn and grow as a professional. I want to be a dependable and skilled sonographer who patients feel safe with, and who doctors can trust to deliver quality imaging. This isn’t just a job to me, I believe it’s my calling. I’m ready for the hard work, and I’m excited to make a real difference.
What drives me is my attention to detail, compassion for others, and a true passion for what I do. I’m committed to showing up every day with professionalism and purpose. With this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to my goal of helping others the way so many sonographers once helped me and my mom. Thank you for considering my story, I hope I’ll be selected.

My name is Marissa and I just turned 20 years old. I’m organized, dependable, and committed to giving my best. I am very eager to further my education, so I can become a sonographer. I’ve had the opportunity to shadow a cardiac sonographer with 41 years of experience, and that hands-on experience confirmed that this is the path I want to take.
I have a strong work ethic and real motivation to succeed in a program and career.Highly motivated college student with a strong record of professionalism and academic excellence. I manage my own small business in making chocolate covered treats and have engaged in various volunteer roles. I have a solid background in communication, customer engagement, working in teams, and multitasking. I am passionate about helping others, learning, and apply my ability to give attention to detail in both clinical and business settings.
I plan to graduate from the cardiac program and pass the necessary board exams to become certified. I plan to be working as a cardiac sonographer in a clinical practice gaining experience and continuing to grow in the field. I hope to be someone that patients and coworkers can count on. I want to be a good and confident sonographer that the cardiologist can trust and rely on. This is a very professional and serious career. At my community college they make you go through radiology program first then the sonographery program. Both programs would take many years to do due to time doing it, waiting because it’s lottery based and money. Then the other cardiac program I am applying to at Gurnick Academy is about 50k. That is a lot of money and can take a toll. I’m hoping to get selected for scholarships. I’ve never gotten one before and am hoping to receive some to help. I am very passionate about this career and I know in my hearts it’s for me. I love learning from shadowing and can’t wait to learn more once I get accepted in a cardiac sonography program! Thank you for your time.
