A Spirit of Excellence To me, excellence is not about being perfect. It is about constantly challenging myself to become better than I was yesterday. Iv'e learned that excellence is built through discipline, consistency, and the willingness to keep going when things do not go according to plan. One experience that changed my perspective of excellence happened during Basic Combat Training last year. During White Phase, we trained everyday on weapons knowledge and qualifications before we have to go to the range. In order to qualify with our rifles, we have to hit 23 out of 40 targets, but I only hit 20. I was disappointed because I had wanted to pass so that I could move onto the next phase of training and graduate on time with all my friends. Instead, I was recycled to a new company and I had to relearn everything. I viewed it as a setback but eventually I realized that it was an opportunity to grow and learn. At my new unit, my Drill Sergeants challenged me to become more disciplined and to stop giving only half of my effort. I had become so complacent at my old unit and I got used to the idea of being lazy. Looking back I realized that there were times I could have pushed myself harder during the ruck marches, or trying to score high on the PT test. That experience taught me that excellence requires giving my best effort even when no one is watching. Today, I carry that lesson into my education, military career, and everyday responsibilities. I believe excellence means using what I learned to help others. I try to give back bey being someone others can depend on, whether that means helping a fellow soldier understand something, encouraging my own experiences. I understand that leadership is not simply about having a position or title. It is about serving others and helping the people around you become better. My goal of continue my education and pursing a commission as an Army Officer reflects this commitment.
