As a future psychiatrist, I am deeply committed to understanding the complexities of mental health and making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals facing psychological challenges. My journey toward this career began with a personal experience that shaped my desire to help others. Losing someone close to me to suicide was a life-altering event, and it sparked an intense drive to understand mental illness, particularly the invisible struggles that many people face. This tragedy revealed to me how important it is to provide compassionate care and early intervention for those who feel isolated by their pain. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the way the mind works. I’ve spent much of my life learning about mental health, reading extensively about psychology, and volunteering in settings where I could offer support to those in need. These experiences have only deepened my understanding of the significance of mental well-being in a person’s overall health. I’ve learned that mental illness is not just about a set of symptoms but is deeply intertwined with a person’s environment, relationships, and overall life experiences. This has driven my passion to not only treat but also to empathize with and empower my future patients. My goal as a psychiatrist is to make a positive impact by offering both medical treatment and emotional support to those struggling with mental health challenges. I plan to focus on suicide prevention and mental health education, particularly in underrepresented and stigmatized communities. The more I’ve learned about mental illness, the more I realize how crucial it is to break the stigma surrounding it. Many people suffer in silence because they fear judgment or believe their struggles are not valid. I want to be a part of the change that encourages people to seek help without shame or fear. As I pursue my studies and future career, I aim to be an advocate for a holistic approach to mental health care—one that considers the physical, emotional, and social factors affecting a person’s well-being. I believe that as a psychiatrist, I can help people not only by prescribing medication but also by providing therapy, building trust, and fostering an environment of understanding. By working with patients to explore the root causes of their mental health issues, I hope to empower them to take control of their mental and emotional well-being, making them feel heard, seen, and valued. In the future, I hope to also contribute to broader societal efforts in suicide prevention, by raising awareness, educating the public, and advocating for policies that prioritize mental health care. Ultimately, my goal is to create a lasting, positive change in how we approach mental health care and to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
    Female Athleticism Scholarship
Being involved in a sport, particularly martial arts, has had a profound impact on my development as a stronger, more confident woman in a world often dominated by male influence. The discipline, physical strength, and mental resilience that martial arts demand have equipped me with tools to navigate life, balance school, and face challenges with a sense of empowerment and perseverance. Martial arts, unlike many other activities, has a unique way of breaking down gender stereotypes. It’s a sport where strength, agility, and determination matter more than gender, which is especially empowering for women. From my very first training session, I learned that physical limits can be pushed through effort and focus, regardless of whether you're male or female. The sheer effort required to master techniques, build stamina, and engage in sparring with opponents—many of whom were men—taught me resilience. It showed me that my worth was not determined by my gender but by my ability to work hard, persist, and continuously improve. Balancing martial arts with school and everyday life was not easy, but it taught me invaluable lessons in time management, discipline, and mental fortitude. Martial arts practices are intense and often require long hours of training, which means I had to learn how to prioritize tasks and manage my time effectively. At the same time, I had to maintain a focus on my studies and other life responsibilities. This balancing act taught me the importance of staying organized, setting clear goals, and making sure I followed through on my commitments—traits that are essential for success in any field, especially in a world where women sometimes have to work harder to prove themselves. Martial arts also helped me build confidence, both physically and mentally. The process of learning and improving has helped me become more comfortable with who I am and how I present myself in a world that often expects women to conform to certain standards. Whether it’s speaking up in class, asserting my opinions, or standing my ground in professional settings, martial arts has given me the confidence to assert myself and take up space. The self-assurance I’ve gained in training translates to every part of my life. Additionally, martial arts has fostered a sense of camaraderie with other women in the sport. It’s empowering to be surrounded by other strong, determined women who understand the unique challenges we face in male-dominated environments. We support each other, celebrate each other's victories, and help each other overcome setbacks. Ultimately, martial arts has been a powerful tool in my journey toward becoming a stronger, more resilient woman. It has given me the confidence to face life’s challenges head-on, balancing school, personal growth, and societal expectations, while never allowing anyone or anything to define my worth based on gender.

Losing Ryan was a heartbreaking experience that has had a profound impact on my life and my career aspirations. Ryan was someone I deeply cared about, and his death by suicide left me with an overwhelming sense of confusion, guilt, and sadness. His struggle with mental health had been invisible to many of us, and his decision to end his life was something I couldn’t fully understand at the time. However, this loss has been a catalyst for my decision to pursue a career in psychiatry, specifically focused on suicide prevention and mental health care. Before Ryan’s death, I had never fully grasped how deep and isolating the pain of mental illness could be. His passing forced me to confront the harsh reality that people often struggle silently, unable or unwilling to reach out for help. I became acutely aware of how mental health challenges, particularly depression and anxiety, are often stigmatized, making it even more difficult for individuals to seek the support they need. This experience made me want to do something to address these issues and help prevent other tragedies like Ryan’s. As I reflect on the personal impact of his loss, I realize it has shaped the way I view my role as a future psychiatrist. Psychiatry, to me, is not just about diagnosing and treating conditions; it’s about understanding the complexities of human suffering and offering a safe, empathetic space for people to heal. I have come to understand that many people dealing with mental health issues often feel isolated and hopeless, and sometimes they need more than just medication—they need someone to listen, to offer guidance, and to be a source of hope. This realization has inspired my desire to specialize in suicide prevention and to focus on offering a holistic approach to mental health care. I want to be someone who not only addresses the biological and psychological aspects of mental health but also works to break down the stigma surrounding it. By fostering open dialogue about mental illness and helping people understand that it’s okay to seek help, I believe I can make a meaningful difference. I know that suicide prevention requires early intervention, awareness, and, most importantly, compassion. As a psychiatrist, I will have the opportunity to combine evidence-based treatments with a personal commitment to understanding the struggles of my patients. I am passionate about helping people who feel that there is no way out and ensuring they know that there is always hope. My personal loss has shaped me into someone who is determined to make a positive impact in the field of mental health, and I am committed to helping prevent suicide by providing care, empathy, and support to those who need it most.

Being a student-athlete has been an incredibly transformative experience for me, and it has played a significant role in shaping my future career goals. As a martial artist, I've not only honed my physical abilities but also developed qualities like discipline, resilience, and focus that have helped me both inside and outside of sports. These characteristics have influenced my career aspirations, pushing me toward a profession that values hard work, determination, and the ability to overcome challenges—traits that I see as essential in fields like medicine, psychology, or any career that requires problem-solving and personal dedication. Martial arts have taught me to be patient and persistent. In training, success isn’t immediate, and it’s often the result of countless hours of practice, failure, and recovery. This is a mindset that I will carry with me as I pursue my future career, especially when I face challenges in the professional world. Whether it's achieving mastery in a skill, overcoming obstacles in a job, or building meaningful relationships with clients or colleagues, martial arts have shown me the importance of sticking with something even when it gets difficult. These lessons are directly transferable to many career paths, particularly those in fields that demand long-term commitment, such as healthcare, teaching, or leadership roles. Moreover, martial arts have also helped me understand the importance of teamwork and mentorship. While martial arts may appear to be an individual pursuit, much of my growth has come from the camaraderie within my training community. The relationships I've built with teammates, coaches, and mentors have emphasized the value of collaboration and learning from others—traits that I know will serve me well in any career. Martial arts have also sparked a passion for teaching and mentoring others, motivating me to explore careers where I can help others grow, whether as a teacher, therapist, or coach. Outside of sports, I have a deep interest in reading, which has provided me with a different but equally valuable set of skills. Reading has expanded my worldview, enhanced my empathy, and allowed me to connect with ideas and experiences beyond my own. I am especially drawn to literature that explores human psychology, philosophy, and personal development. These subjects have influenced my career aspirations, sparking an interest in understanding the complexities of human behavior and mental health. Whether reading about the resilience of characters in fiction or learning about the intricacies of the human mind through non-fiction, I find that reading provides me with the tools to better understand the world and the people in it. In summary, being a martial artist has shaped my career goals by instilling in me values of persistence, discipline, and collaboration, while my love for reading has expanded my understanding of human nature and personal growth. Both of these interests have given me a well-rounded perspective, fueling my passion for a career that allows me to help others reach their potential and navigate life's challenges.
Ryan Murray Red Canyon Scholarship Award
After graduation, my professional goal is to pursue a career as a psychiatrist, with a focus on providing compassionate care to individuals struggling with mental health challenges. The path to this career was shaped significantly by my high school experience, which fostered a deep curiosity about the human mind and the intricacies of mental health. In high school, I was fortunate to have an academic experience that was uniquely tailored to my interests. I was able to pursue courses in psychology, biology, and health sciences, which provided a strong foundation for my future career in psychiatry. My high school was forward-thinking in allowing me to engage in interdisciplinary studies, where I could combine subjects like science with aspects of philosophy and ethics. This blend of disciplines gave me a well-rounded understanding of human behavior, emotions, and mental processes, all of which are critical in the field of psychiatry. The high school environment also encouraged my development as a critical thinker. Through the analysis of case studies, research projects, and discussions on mental health issues, I honed my analytical skills, which I knew would be vital for diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. My ability to examine situations from multiple perspectives was enhanced, and this will allow me to approach each patient as an individual with unique needs and experiences. This comprehensive approach shaped my decision to pursue psychiatry, as I aim to understand and address the complexities of mental health from various angles. What set my academic experience apart was the opportunity to take part in a psychology club, where we organized events to raise awareness about mental health in our community. We hosted guest speakers, screened films, and facilitated open discussions, all of which deepened my understanding of mental health issues on a societal level. I came to realize the significance of reducing stigma around mental illness and advocating for better resources and education on the subject. Ultimately, the combination of academic rigor, hands-on experiences, and exposure to mental health care during high school set me on the path to becoming a psychiatrist. It helped me realize that I wanted to not only treat patients but also work to break down the barriers that prevent people from seeking help. With a passion for learning, a deep commitment to making a difference, and a clear purpose, I am confident that my tailored high school experience has prepared me to pursue my dreams in psychiatry.

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), starring Will Smith. This film tells the true story of Chris Gardner, a struggling salesman who, despite facing immense hardship, maintains an unwavering determination to create a better life for himself and his young son. The movie resonated with me on a deeply personal level and left a lasting impression, shaping the way I approach challenges and understand perseverance, hope, and the importance of family. One of the key reasons this movie impacted me is because of its powerful message about resilience in the face of adversity. Chris Gardner's journey is full of struggles—financial instability, homelessness, and the constant challenge of trying to build a better future with limited resources. Watching his character never give up, despite his overwhelming circumstances, reminded me of the importance of not surrendering to life’s difficulties. There were times in my own life when I faced setbacks or felt as though success was out of reach, but the movie inspired me to keep pushing forward. It made me realize that setbacks don’t define our future; our determination to continue moving forward, even when things seem hopeless, is what truly matters. Another aspect of the film that deeply affected me was Chris's relationship with his son, Christopher. Throughout the movie, he demonstrates how deeply he cares for his child, always prioritizing his well-being and trying to shield him from the harshness of their reality. This love and devotion reminded me of the importance of family support and the sacrifices that are often made for the ones we love. As someone who values family relationships, watching Chris’s dedication to his son reminded me that success is not just about achieving personal goals but also about nurturing the connections we have with others and making those around us feel safe and loved. The movie also helped me reflect on the idea of happiness. In the title, “Happyness” is intentionally misspelled, symbolizing the struggle to find true happiness amidst hardship. Chris’s journey is about more than just professional success—it's about finding peace and fulfillment despite the obstacles life throws his way. This reinforced for me that happiness doesn’t necessarily come from wealth or status but from personal growth, determination, and the love of those closest to you. In conclusion, The Pursuit of Happyness has shaped the way I view perseverance, success, and family. It taught me that even in the toughest times, persistence and love can lead to fulfillment and personal victory. The lessons from the film continue to guide me, reminding me to face challenges head-on and to never lose sight of what truly matters.
    Empower Her Scholarship
Empowerment means the ability to control one's life, make choices, and take actions that lead to positive change. It’s about understanding your own worth, having confidence in your decisions, and taking ownership of your experiences. For me, empowerment is about knowing that I have the tools to navigate life’s challenges and the ability to influence my own path, even in the face of adversity. It's about cultivating the inner strength to rise above limitations and create opportunities, rather than feeling controlled by circumstances or external forces. Empowerment affects my life in profound ways. When I feel empowered, I believe in my ability to make decisions that are in alignment with my values and aspirations. I’m more likely to step outside of my comfort zone and pursue my goals, whether that involves taking on new responsibilities, standing up for myself, or exploring new opportunities. With empowerment, I feel a sense of control over my future, knowing that I have the power to make changes and steer my life in the direction I desire. Another significant way empowerment impacts my life is in how I view my self-worth. When I recognize my own potential and abilities, I stop doubting myself and instead trust in the choices I make. Empowerment fosters a sense of confidence, making me less afraid to fail and more willing to take risks that can lead to growth. The ability to embrace failure as part of the process, rather than as an obstacle, is a powerful result of empowerment. Empowerment also affects my interactions with others. When I feel confident in myself, I am more likely to support and uplift others, encouraging them to find their own sense of power and potential. It creates a ripple effect—empowered individuals empower others. In relationships, both personal and professional, empowerment leads to more honest, respectful, and supportive connections. It fosters an environment where everyone feels capable of being their authentic selves and contributing to collective growth. At times, empowerment also means understanding when to seek help. Asking for guidance or support is a sign of strength, not weakness. It allows me to acknowledge that I can’t do everything on my own, and seeking help is often the best way to move forward. Ultimately, empowerment is about embracing the journey of growth, learning, and resilience, understanding that each step, whether forward or backward, adds to my sense of agency and ability to influence my own life.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue psychology because I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities of the human mind and the ways in which our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence our daily lives. From a young age, I noticed how people respond to different situations—some with resilience and others with vulnerability—and how various factors like personal experiences, relationships, and societal pressures shape their mental well-being. This curiosity about human behavior sparked my desire to study psychology and use what I learn to help people navigate their mental health struggles. The decision to pursue psychology became even more meaningful after experiencing firsthand how important mental health care is. During my high school years, I witnessed friends and classmates facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Many of them felt alone in their struggles, and there was often a stigma surrounding mental health that kept them from reaching out for help. I realized that the lack of awareness and resources for mental health was a significant issue, and I knew I wanted to be part of the solution. This personal experience solidified my decision to pursue a career in psychology, specifically in clinical or counseling psychology, where I can directly assist individuals in their mental health journeys. My goal is to create an impact by promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and offering support to those in need. I want to make mental health care more accessible, ensuring that people feel comfortable seeking help when they are struggling. A key aspect of this vision is educating individuals about the importance of mental well-being, providing coping strategies, and fostering a culture of understanding and empathy. I also want to advocate for more resources in schools, workplaces, and communities, so that mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. In terms of my personal goals, I am committed to continuously growing both as an individual and as a future mental health professional. I plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychology and gain hands-on experience through internships and volunteer opportunities to refine my skills and knowledge. I also want to be a constant advocate for mental health awareness, both in my professional work and in my personal life, to inspire others to seek help without fear of judgment. Ultimately, my passion for psychology is driven by the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. By pursuing a career in this field, I hope to create a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities by helping them overcome mental health challenges, fostering resilience, and promoting well-being for all.
    Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
I’m a fan of Sabrina Carpenter because she has consistently used her platform to inspire and empower others while staying authentic to herself. Her journey as an artist, actress, and advocate has been a constant source of motivation for me, especially in how she handles both the pressures of fame and personal growth. What I admire most about Sabrina is her ability to remain true to her values, even as she navigates a public career. Whether through her music, acting, or social media, she creates a positive influence by encouraging people to embrace who they truly are. One of the aspects of Sabrina’s career that stands out to me is how she uses her music to express vulnerability. Her lyrics resonate with people going through personal struggles, offering a sense of comfort and solidarity. She has songs that tackle themes of self-love, growth, and dealing with difficult emotions, which has personally helped me reflect on my own experiences. Her song “Skin” in particular, for example, touched on issues of self-acceptance and standing strong in the face of criticism, which really resonated with me. In addition to her musical talent, Sabrina’s career has also taught me about resilience and perseverance. She began in the entertainment industry at a young age, and watching her evolve from a Disney Channel star into a multifaceted artist has been inspiring. She’s shown that success doesn’t come easily, but with hard work and dedication, you can carve out your own path in the industry. Her focus on creating art that is meaningful and true to herself has been a reminder that following your passion and staying authentic to your values is crucial, regardless of external pressures. Overall, Sabrina Carpenter’s career has had a positive impact on me by showing that it’s possible to stay true to your passion and use your platform to create meaningful change. Her music, advocacy, and authenticity continue to inspire me to embrace my own journey and to prioritize staying true to myself, no matter the challenges I may face.
    Autumn Davis Memorial Scholarship
Mental health has had a significant influence on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Growing up, I always understood the importance of physical health but didn’t fully appreciate how critical mental health was until I personally experienced the struggles of dealing with stress, anxiety, and self-doubt. These challenges taught me the importance of addressing mental health and its impact on every aspect of a person’s life, from emotional well-being to interpersonal relationships. My experience with mental health has shaped my belief that it’s just as important to take care of our minds as it is to take care of our bodies. I’ve learned that mental health is not just the absence of illness but a vital part of overall well-being. This perspective has affected how I approach relationships with others. Having dealt with my own mental health challenges, I became more empathetic and understanding toward those facing similar struggles. I recognize that everyone’s journey is unique, and some battles may be invisible to others. As a result, I’ve built stronger, more supportive relationships with friends, family, and peers by fostering open conversations about mental health and offering a listening ear when needed. These experiences have also inspired me to pursue a career in psychology. Throughout high school, I began to develop a strong interest in understanding the mind and learning how psychological principles could help individuals overcome challenges in their lives. I realized that my passion for mental health wasn’t just personal—it was something I wanted to make a difference in for others as well. By studying psychology, I plan to contribute to the field of mental health through both direct clinical care and advocacy. In my future career, I hope to help people improve their mental well-being, whether through counseling or therapy, by providing the support they need to navigate life’s obstacles. I am particularly drawn to the field of clinical psychology, where I can work directly with individuals facing mental health challenges. I believe that by providing a safe and non-judgmental space for people to talk about their feelings, I can help them better understand themselves and develop strategies for coping with difficult emotions. Additionally, I want to work toward eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. I’ve seen how society often discourages people from seeking help, and I aim to be part of a movement that encourages individuals to prioritize their mental health and seek the support they need. Through my work, I hope to not only offer support to individuals but also contribute to a broader shift in how society perceives mental health. By raising awareness and promoting early intervention, I believe we can create a world where mental health is prioritized just as much as physical health. Ultimately, my goal is to empower people to take control of their mental well-being and help build a more compassionate, understanding, and supportive society. In conclusion, my personal experiences with mental health have shaped my beliefs, enhanced my empathy, and directed my career aspirations toward helping others. By pursuing a career in psychology, I aim to make a positive impact on individuals’ mental health, offering support and contributing to a greater understanding of the importance of mental well-being.
Julie Adams Memorial Scholarship – Women in STEM
I am passionate about pursuing a degree in psychology because it aligns with my deep curiosity about human behavior and my desire to make a positive impact on others. The more I learn about the human mind and its complexities, the more fascinated I become. Psychology offers a unique opportunity to understand not only the way people think, feel, and act but also the underlying factors that influence their behavior. Through the study of psychology, I hope to not only satisfy my intellectual curiosity but also develop the tools to help people lead healthier, more fulfilled lives. From an early age, I have been intrigued by how individuals navigate the world. I’ve always found myself asking questions like, “Why do people behave the way they do?” and “What motivates them to make the choices they do?” I was drawn to observe how my friends and family interacted with one another, how their emotions and experiences shaped their actions, and how those behaviors affected their relationships. As I got older, I realized that understanding human behavior is key to understanding the world around us. Psychology provides the lens through which we can study how our minds work and how they affect our thoughts, actions, and relationships. This fascination with psychology grew into a passion when I began reflecting on my personal experiences. One of the most impactful moments in my life was losing a close friend, Ryan, to suicide. His death was a wake-up call, revealing just how much mental health struggles can go unnoticed and untreated. Ryan was someone I had known for many years, and his passing left a profound impact on me. I realized that despite our close friendship, I was unaware of the depth of his internal struggles. His tragic death highlighted the importance of mental health awareness, intervention, and the need for better support systems for those battling mental health issues. This experience shaped my desire to study psychology, as it became clear to me that understanding the mind was crucial to preventing such tragedies. I began to reflect on how mental health is often overlooked, misunderstood, or stigmatized in our society. People like Ryan, who suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, may feel isolated or reluctant to seek help due to fear of judgment. This realization fueled my determination to pursue a degree in psychology—to learn not only about the science behind mental health but also how we can create a world where people feel comfortable seeking help and accessing the support they need. Psychology offers an invaluable opportunity to explore how to prevent, understand, and treat mental health issues. The idea that a person’s mental well-being can be nurtured and improved through therapeutic methods, research, and intervention is something I find profoundly inspiring. I am particularly interested in clinical psychology and counseling, as I believe that by equipping people with the right tools and knowledge, we can help them navigate life's challenges in healthier, more constructive ways. Through counseling, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and behaviors, which can be transformative. I want to be someone who can make a real difference in people’s lives by helping them overcome personal struggles and empowering them to lead healthier, happier lives. Additionally, the versatility of psychology as a field of study excites me. It offers a wide range of areas to explore, from clinical practice to research to organizational psychology. The ability to work in diverse settings, whether in private practice, schools, hospitals, or research institutions, provides countless opportunities to apply psychological principles in meaningful ways. This adaptability is one of the reasons I’m drawn to psychology. It allows for growth and continuous learning, and I believe it will enable me to develop skills that can help people from all walks of life. I am especially interested in combining my passion for psychology with my interest in mental health advocacy, breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental illness, and promoting greater mental health awareness in the community. Moreover, psychology offers a path to personal growth. The field requires critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to actively listen, which are all skills I want to develop. Through my studies, I will not only gain a deeper understanding of others but also learn more about myself. Psychology challenges us to question our assumptions, approach situations with compassion, and think analytically about human behavior. These skills, I believe, are fundamental to becoming a well-rounded and effective practitioner. The opportunity to engage with different perspectives, both in the classroom and in real-world settings, will help me grow both personally and professionally. Pursuing a degree in psychology also allows me to make a tangible, lasting impact. By becoming a psychologist, I will be in a position to influence the mental health field in ways that can improve lives. Whether through providing counseling, conducting research, or advocating for mental health reforms, I know that the skills and knowledge I gain through this degree will allow me to make a difference. Just as psychology has the potential to change lives, I believe it will shape my own life by guiding me toward a fulfilling career that combines my intellectual curiosity with my passion for helping others. In conclusion, my passion for psychology stems from a deep curiosity about the human mind and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The tragic loss of my friend Ryan, coupled with my personal experiences, has reinforced my commitment to studying psychology and pursuing a career in mental health. I am eager to learn how to understand and help those who are struggling with mental health issues, while also advocating for greater awareness and reducing stigma. Through this degree, I hope to develop the tools necessary to improve lives, foster emotional well-being, and contribute to the broader mental health community. Ultimately, psychology is not just a career choice—it’s a lifelong calling to help others heal, grow, and find balance in their lives.
    Success Beyond Borders
Title: Waves of Resilience Opening Scene: The film opens with a soft glow of dawn breaking over the horizon, illuminating a vast, serene beach. The camera lingers on the horizon, where the sky meets the ocean, the water reflecting the early light like a quiet mirror. The sounds of the waves gently crashing against the shore can be heard in the background, peaceful but constant. Slowly, the camera moves down the beach, where a lone figure is walking—me, standing at the water's edge. With each step, the tide creeps closer, the wet sand beneath my feet grounding me as I move forward. The waves are calm at first, but they grow more intense with each step, mirroring the inner turbulence I’ve experienced in life. As the camera pulls back, the scene transitions into a series of black-and-white flashbacks, quick flashes of my life—late-night study sessions, quiet moments of doubt, times when I felt lost, but also moments of strength and accomplishment. I see myself struggling with failures, wondering if I was good enough, yet in every frame, I push through, continuing to move forward despite the uncertainties that clouded my path. The waves become more erratic as the memories intensify, representing the chaotic times in my life, but through each surge, I stand firm, learning to navigate the turbulence. The camera then returns to the present, and I stop walking, standing still at the water’s edge. The sound of the waves is almost deafening now, but with a deep breath, I steady myself, finding balance. The waves crash against the shore with force, yet they do not overwhelm me. I look out into the vast expanse of the ocean—endless, mysterious, full of possibilities, yet sometimes daunting. This moment symbolizes my current understanding of the challenges I’ve faced and how they’ve shaped me, but also the vast potential that lies ahead. The scene slows as I take another step forward, the waters becoming calmer once again. With each step I take, the turbulence in the water subsides. This symbolizes my ability to face my inner struggles and find peace, learning that despite the chaos that life can bring, I have the power to find calm within myself. The camera focuses on my face, determined yet at ease, as I walk along the beach, the future wide open before me. The winds begin to pick up, pushing me forward, but I am not afraid. I know the journey will continue to challenge me, but I am learning to embrace each wave, each storm, each new horizon. The camera pulls back to reveal the vast beach, stretching out endlessly, a metaphor for the journey ahead. As I continue to walk, the soundtrack swells with a quiet, hopeful melody—a sense of possibility. The screen cuts to black. The words Waves of Resilience appear in bold letters, followed by the tagline: The waves will come, but I will keep moving. This opening scene is a visual representation of my personal journey—one of overcoming adversity, learning from struggles, and finding strength in resilience. The waves symbolize the challenges I have faced, and my steady walk along the shore represents my constant determination to move forward. The film's message is clear: life will continue to bring difficult moments, but with resilience and growth, I can navigate them and find peace amidst the chaos. It is an opening that sets the tone for my ongoing journey of self-discovery, growth, and unwavering hope for the future.
    Redefining Victory Scholarship
For me, success is not defined by societal markers like wealth or fame, but by personal growth, fulfillment, and the ability to contribute positively to the world around me. Success means living a life that is aligned with my values, continuously improving myself, and using my abilities to help others. It’s about being content with who I am while striving to be the best version of myself, both academically and personally. One of the key components of success for me is the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, particularly in the field of psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by how the human mind works and how people cope with challenges, both internal and external. This interest has driven me to study psychology, and my goal is to become a psychologist who not only helps individuals navigate their mental health struggles but also works to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. I want to make a tangible impact on people’s lives by providing them with the tools they need to improve their mental and emotional well-being. Another important aspect of success for me is making meaningful connections with others. Building strong relationships, whether through family, friends, or professional networks, is essential to a fulfilling life. Success, in this sense, isn’t about how many people know you, but rather how deeply you connect with those around you and how you contribute to their growth and happiness. Through genuine relationships, I believe we can learn from one another, support each other, and grow together. Personal development also plays a significant role in how I define success. This means constantly evaluating my strengths and weaknesses and being open to change. Success, to me, is not about being perfect, but about being better than I was yesterday. It’s about setting goals, overcoming obstacles, and taking accountability for my actions. Every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow, and every achievement is a step closer to becoming the person I want to be. This opportunity is crucial in helping me achieve these personal definitions of success. The chance to pursue higher education and study psychology will provide me with the academic foundation I need to make a real difference in the field of mental health. The knowledge I gain will equip me with the tools to understand and help individuals dealing with mental health challenges, which is a primary goal of mine. As I pursue this path, I will also develop skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving, all of which are essential for success in any field. Moreover, the opportunity to be a part of a diverse community of learners will expand my perspective and help me connect with others who share my passions and values. Building a network of people who are equally dedicated to making a positive impact will be invaluable as I move forward in my career. This opportunity also offers the chance to take part in research, internships, or volunteering, all of which will allow me to gain hands-on experience in psychology and mental health care. These experiences will deepen my understanding and enhance my ability to help others effectively. Ultimately, this opportunity aligns perfectly with my vision of success. It will provide me with the academic and personal tools I need to grow, connect with others, and make a meaningful impact in the world. The knowledge, skills, and relationships I cultivate through this experience will serve as the foundation for my future success in psychology, and beyond.

Billie Eilish’s music has been a powerful force in my life, and there are three songs that stand out to me because of their emotional depth, relatability, and the way they capture complex feelings. Here are my top three Billie Eilish songs and why they resonate so deeply with me: "bury a friend" This song resonates with me because of its haunting and raw portrayal of inner conflict and anxiety. The lyrics—“What do you want from me? Why don’t you run from me?”—express a sense of internal struggle, self-doubt, and the feeling of being trapped by one’s own emotions. The eerie production, paired with Billie’s haunting vocals, captures a sense of unease that I think many people can relate to, especially in moments of vulnerability. It speaks to the feeling of being stuck in one’s head, trying to escape the darker parts of yourself or the expectations others place on you. "everything i wanted" This song is deeply personal to me because it speaks to the complexities of success, self-worth, and the fear of losing yourself in the process. The lyrics, “I had a dream I got everything I wanted / But when I wake up, I see you with me,” highlight the tension between external achievements and internal fulfillment. It touches on the pressure to meet expectations and the feeling that no matter what you achieve, it may not be enough. I’ve often struggled with the same kind of self-doubt and fear of not living up to expectations, and this song offers a comforting sense of understanding that we’re not alone in feeling this way. "idontwannabeyouanymore" This song is a deeply reflective piece about self-acceptance and the struggle with identity. The lyrics express a feeling of self-loathing and the desire to escape from being someone you don’t fully recognize or want to be. The simplicity of the melody, paired with Billie’s vulnerable vocals, creates an emotionally raw and intimate experience. I find it powerful because it captures the feelings of not feeling good enough or struggling with who you are, which is something that many people, myself included, grapple with during challenging times. The song serves as a reminder to embrace who we are, despite our imperfections. Each of these songs resonates with me because they speak to universal feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. Billie Eilish’s ability to turn raw emotions into art that feels both personal and relatable is one of the reasons why her music has such a deep impact on me. These songs reflect parts of my own experiences and emotions, and listening to them always reminds me that I’m not alone in my struggles.

Music has been an integral part of my life throughout high school, serving not only as a source of comfort and expression but also as a powerful tool for growth and self-discovery. During these years, music became more than just something I listened to; it became a language through which I processed my emotions, connected with others, and navigated the challenges of adolescence. From the moment I stepped into high school, I was exposed to a diverse range of musical genres, and I found that music played a unique role in helping me manage the ups and downs of these years. During moments of stress or self-doubt—whether from academic pressure or social challenges—certain songs provided solace. Artists like Billie Eilish, Lorde, and John Mayer gave voice to feelings I couldn’t express in words. Their lyrics spoke to the uncertainty and turbulence I often felt, and listening to them allowed me to process those emotions in a way that felt validating. Music became my refuge during tough moments, offering me a sense of understanding that I couldn’t always find elsewhere. On the other hand, music also became a source of motivation and energy. I often created playlists to get through long study sessions or workouts, and I found that certain tracks had the power to shift my mindset and boost my mood. Upbeat songs like those from Imagine Dragons or Post Malone gave me the energy to push through difficult tasks, and I often relied on these songs to keep my spirits high during challenging times. Music became a tool for focus, determination, and empowerment, helping me navigate the relentless pace of high school life. Beyond personal emotional support, music played a significant role in my social interactions and relationships. In high school, many of my friendships were built around shared musical interests. I bonded with friends over concerts, playlists, and even debates about which band or artist was the best. Music provided a common ground for connection, especially in a time when we were all still figuring out who we were. The power of music to unite people was never more evident than when I attended school events, where everyone would come together to sing along to a favorite song or share their favorite tracks with each other. These shared experiences created a sense of community that made me feel less isolated during a time when social dynamics often felt daunting. Additionally, I had the opportunity to explore my own musical talents. Joining the school choir and learning to play instruments like the guitar and piano allowed me to not only express myself but also to challenge myself. Music gave me a creative outlet that was both fulfilling and empowering. It was in these moments of musical creation that I learned discipline, patience, and the importance of practice. Music helped me develop confidence in myself and my abilities, teaching me that growth comes from persistence and passion. In conclusion, music has profoundly shaped my high school experience. It served as an emotional outlet, a source of motivation, and a bridge for connecting with others. Whether I was seeking comfort, working through a problem, or celebrating a victory, music was always there, guiding me through the highs and lows of high school life. As I reflect on these years, I realize how deeply music has influenced my personal growth and how it will continue to be a cornerstone of my life moving forward.

from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius: "The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. So, guard yourself carefully, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature. For you will find that in your life, if you are in harmony with yourself, all things will be in harmony with you. But if you are in disagreement with yourself, everything will be out of sync. So, keep yourself in good form—body, mind, and soul. Be aware of your thoughts and correct them when they go astray."You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." Essay: In this paragraph, Marcus Aurelius conveys an essential lesson about human resilience and the locus of control in our lives. His words challenge us to reconsider how we interact with external circumstances and to place greater emphasis on the power we hold over our own thoughts and responses. The underlying thesis here is that true strength and peace come not from controlling the external world, which is often beyond our reach, but from mastering our own minds. Aurelius presents a fundamental Stoic belief: while we cannot always control what happens to us, we have complete authority over how we react. This insight is particularly relevant in today’s world, where external pressures—be it societal expectations, personal hardships, or global crises—can often feel overwhelming. We may encounter events that trigger anxiety, frustration, or anger, but Aurelius teaches us that these emotional responses are not preordained; they are within our control. By recognizing that we cannot control the chaos outside of us, but we can govern our inner worlds, we find an empowering freedom that leads to strength. The concept of inner strength is central to Stoic philosophy. Strength, in this sense, is not defined by the ability to conquer the external world but by the capacity to maintain equanimity in the face of external turmoil. When we accept that we cannot change every situation, we are freed from the exhausting and fruitless pursuit of controlling others and events. Instead, we can focus on cultivating virtues like patience, resilience, and wisdom, which are the true markers of a strong character. Aurelius’s perspective invites a shift from reactive living—where we are tossed about by the whims of fate—to proactive living, where we consciously choose how we engage with the world. This approach doesn’t suggest that we should be indifferent to life’s challenges but encourages us to respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. By exercising control over our own minds, we build a stable foundation that is not easily shaken by the unpredictable nature of life. Also in this passage, Marcus Aurelius emphasizes that true happiness comes from the quality of our thoughts, not external circumstances. He urges us to guard our minds against thoughts that are not in line with virtue and reason. When we align our internal world with wisdom and self-discipline, we achieve harmony and peace. If our thoughts are in conflict or lead us away from virtue, our lives become disordered and chaotic. Aurelius advocates for constant self-awareness and correction of negative or irrational thoughts. Ultimately, happiness lies in cultivating a mind that is rational, virtuous, and in harmony with nature. In conclusion, Marcus Aurelius’s statement is not merely philosophical; it is a practical guide to living with resilience. By recognizing the limits of external control and embracing the power of self-mastery, we can navigate life’s difficulties with a sense of purpose and inner peace. This timeless advice remains as relevant today as it was in ancient Rome, offering us a pathway to strength in an often chaotic and uncontrollable world.

Growing up, I never fully understood what mental illness was or how it could affect someone until I started experiencing it myself. My family, like many, wasn’t particularly open about mental health. We were taught to “push through” tough times and focus on the positives. However, as I got older, I began to notice signs of depression in myself that couldn’t be ignored. I was often overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and hopelessness that seemed to come out of nowhere. These feelings would linger for days, even weeks, making it difficult for me to enjoy activities I once loved, like hanging out with friends or pursuing hobbies. At first, I chalked it up to typical teenage angst or stress. But over time, the lows became harder to shake off. I found myself withdrawing from others, avoiding social situations, and struggling to motivate myself for everyday tasks, even the simplest ones like getting out of bed or going to school. The weight of it all became unbearable at times, and it wasn’t until I sought therapy that I realized I was dealing with depression. I’ve learned that depression is not something that just “goes away.” It’s an ongoing challenge that I continue to manage, but it doesn’t define me. It took a while for me to even feel comfortable talking about it, especially since mental illness wasn’t openly discussed in my family. I was afraid of being misunderstood or seen as weak. However, as I started sharing more with my family, I realized how important open conversations about mental health can be. My parents, though initially unsure of how to approach the topic, have been incredibly supportive. They’ve helped me understand that depression isn’t something to be ashamed of, and that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a step toward healing. I’ve also seen how mental health struggles have affected other members of my family. My aunt has struggled with anxiety for years, and my cousin has battled with depression, which runs in the family. Seeing the impact of these challenges on my loved ones helped me understand that mental illness doesn’t discriminate, and it can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstance. It’s a reminder that we all have our own battles, and mental health is something that should be taken seriously. In the past few years, I’ve been actively working on managing my depression through therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. I’ve learned coping strategies like mindfulness, journaling, and physical activity that help me keep my emotions in check. It’s an ongoing journey, but I’ve come to realize that taking care of my mental health is just as important as taking care of my physical health. I’m grateful for the support of my family and the strength I’ve found within myself to face this challenge head-on.

A struggle I’ve worked to rise above is the ongoing battle with my own mental health, particularly anxiety and periods of depression. It’s something that I’ve dealt with on and off for years, and at times, it has felt like a heavy burden that I couldn’t escape. The first time I really became aware of my anxiety was in high school. It started as a feeling of unease, a constant knot in my stomach, but I brushed it off, thinking it was just stress from school or social pressures. But over time, it became more intense. I began avoiding situations where I felt out of control—like speaking in front of the class, meeting new people, or even going to social gatherings. I could feel the anxiety creeping in, and it often held me back from participating in things I knew I’d enjoy. For years, I thought I just wasn’t strong enough to handle my emotions. I didn’t realize that my anxiety wasn’t a sign of weakness—it was a condition that required attention and care. Eventually, during a particularly difficult period of feeling low and disconnected, I sought help from a therapist. It was humbling, but I knew I needed support to overcome the emotional barriers I had built up. Therapy became a turning point for me. It gave me the tools to understand my feelings and cope with them in healthier ways. I learned techniques like mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral strategies to manage anxiety in daily life. I also realized the importance of self-compassion and how essential it is to acknowledge my struggles without judgment. It wasn’t an easy road, and there are still days when I feel overwhelmed by anxiety or sadness, but I’ve learned to work through it instead of letting it define me. One of the most challenging aspects of this struggle has been learning to ask for help and not seeing it as a sign of failure. Growing up, I was taught to be independent and strong, but I’ve realized that vulnerability is part of strength. It’s okay to lean on others, whether that’s a therapist, a friend, or family. It’s something I continually work on because I know that mental health is an ongoing journey, not a one-time fix. In addition to therapy, I’ve made it a priority to stay connected to my passions and build a routine that supports my well-being. Exercise, journaling, and spending time with loved ones have become vital parts of my self-care strategy. They give me an outlet for my emotions and help to ground me when I feel overwhelmed. This struggle has shown me the importance of resilience and self-awareness. It’s a work in progress, but every day, I get closer to rising above it, not by ignoring it but by understanding it and learning to live alongside it in a healthy way.

My decision to pursue psychology was deeply shaped by a personal experience involving someone I knew named Ryan, who tragically took his own life. Ryan was someone I admired—kind, funny, and seemingly well-adjusted. However, he struggled with depression and never fully opened up about his pain. I, like many others, assumed he’d be okay. Then, one day, Ryan ended his life. The shock and grief were overwhelming, but what lingered even more was confusion. I kept asking myself, "Why didn’t I see it? Why didn’t I do more?" His death left me with many unanswered questions about mental health and why people, even those surrounded by love and support, sometimes feel so alone. This experience ignited a desire to understand the complexities of the human mind, particularly mental health struggles like depression and anxiety. I decided to pursue psychology to help answer those questions. I wanted to learn how to recognize the signs of distress and find ways to support those who might be suffering in silence. Ryan’s death was a tragic wake-up call that inspired me to dedicate my studies and future work to mental health advocacy and prevention. It became clear that understanding mental health is not just important for me, but for everyone—especially those who feel they have nowhere to turn.

One of my favorite book-to-film adaptations is All the Bright Places, based on Jennifer Niven’s novel. The story is a tender, emotional exploration of love, mental health, and the profound effect one person can have on another. The novel had already left a deep impression on me, so when I found out it was being adapted into a film, I was both excited and nervous. I had high expectations and hoped that the beauty of the book, with its powerful themes and well-developed characters, would translate well onto the screen. The movie adaptation was special because it did exactly that—it stayed true to the essence of the book while also using film as a medium to enhance the story. What stood out to me was the way the film visualized the journey of the two main characters, Violet and Finch, and how they learned to cope with their pain and find light in dark times. In the book, a lot of the emotional depth comes from Violet’s internal dialogue and the way she processes the world around her. The movie couldn’t have that same introspective element, but it compensated for it through stunning cinematography and the choice of locations that represented the characters’ growth. The places they visited, like the abandoned house and the bridge, became powerful symbols of healing, and the film used those to build on the themes of the book. The dynamic between Violet and Finch was another reason why the film worked so well. Both characters have complex emotional lives that are revealed in subtle ways in the novel. The actors, Elle Fanning and Justice Smith, brought those layers to life in such a genuine and moving way. Their performances allowed me to feel the characters’ pain, joy, and vulnerability just as deeply as I did while reading the book. The film also had moments of lightness, like their adventures to various places and their quirky, unique way of connecting, which helped balance the more somber elements of the story. The film adaptation bridged the gap between reading and viewing by enhancing the emotional experience. In the book, there were moments when I wished I could feel the characters’ emotions more fully, but the film allowed me to see it in a way that felt visceral and immediate. The music, the pacing, and the stunning visuals brought out the feelings that the book had evoked, amplifying them without overshadowing the story itself. It became a seamless translation from page to screen, where the emotional journey of the characters was just as impactful. Ultimately, what made All the Bright Places so special to me as a book-to-film adaptation is that it didn’t just retell the story—it deepened the connection I had with the characters and their struggles. It showed me that the power of a good story can transcend the boundaries of any medium.
