Bio

I am passionate about learning new skills in taking care of animals. I've decided to study animal medicine because I love animals and love the biology behind all animals. My goal is to graduate in animal medicine and become a large animal veterinarian. I know that this field is very competitive and is one that most people stay in for a long time. I strive to have a lifelong career doing what I love. I firmly believe that I am deserving of scholarships due to the challenges I have overcome up to this point. At a young age my brother and I were placed into foster care. Eventually we returned home to dad, he was a single father who despite working hard he still made less than enough to support us. Being in an abusive home took its toll. I still regret not defending my brother. For the first time, my brother and I were being separated. I was horrified. Shortly after, dad was diagnosed with leukemia. The next few months were the hardest. Through these hard times of crying, praying, and hoping, my adoptive family was my shoulder to lean on. My dad made it about three months into treatments before passing away. It was so hard and to this day something I rarely talk about. There are days I'd give anything to hear his voice or give him a hug, but I can't. Going to college and pursuing a career in the vet field would mean the world to me and my dad. I know I'm not perfect, but I strive to be just as tough as my dad and push through anything that comes my way. I want to make him proud. That is why I deserve these scholarships and your assistance.

"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Fan Scholarship
As a high school senior navigating the turbulent waters of love and relationships, I found myself very interested in the "The Summer I Turned Pretty" series by Jenny Han, I became completely torn in the timeless debate of whether to align with Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah. After immersing myself in the pages of the novels and binge-watching the series adaptation multiple times, I've come to a resolute decision: I am firmly on Team Conrad. Throughout the series, Conrad Fisher's personality have left an indelible mark on both the protagonist, Belly, and readers like me. From the tender moments shared in their childhood to the revelations of his inner struggles, Conrad's character arc is nothing short of captivating. One particular scene from the series stands out in my mind – the heart-wrenching moment where Conrad bares his soul to Belly, laying out his vulnerabilities and fears on the beach under the moonlight. It's in these raw, authentic moments that Conrad's complexity and character development truly shines, solidifying my complete devotion to his team. But Conrad's appeal extends far beyond his brooding exterior. His unwavering love for Belly, though often shrouded in ambiguity, is a constant throughout the series. From the subtle glances exchanged to the poignant gestures of sacrifice, Conrad's devotion to Belly is palpable and unwavering. His journey of self-discovery and growth, coupled with his enduring love for Belly, make him an irresistible character worthy of admiration and support. While Jeremiah may possess charm and charisma, his connection with Belly lacks the depth and intensity that define her relationship with Conrad. Though he provides moments of levity and companionship, Jeremiah ultimately falls short in comparison to the profound bond shared between Belly and Conrad regardless of his bond with her. In conclusion, after digging deeper in the richly woven tapestry of Jenny Han's series, my allegiance unequivocally lies with Team Conrad forever. His complexity, vulnerability, and unwavering love for Belly resonate deeply with me, making him the clear choice in this debate. As the series continues to unfold, Conrad's journey serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of love and the importance of staying true to oneself and never lowering your standards for someone else. The books and movie series has captivated my attention as many alike. And as many others are, we are in awe of Conrad’s connection with belly in every scene with every word.
    Mental Health Empowerment Scholarship
As a high school senior, mental health isn't just a buzzword to me—it's the heartbeat of my daily existence. It's the quiet battles fought behind closed doors, the tears shed in frustration, and the whispers of self-doubt that linger in the shadows. Yet, amidst the chaos of exams, college applications, and teenage angst, mental health holds the power to transform pain into resilience, fear into courage, and isolation into connection. For me, mental health isn't just about grades or accolades; it's about survival. It's about finding the strength to get out of bed each morning when the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear. It's about learning to love and accept myself, flaws and all, in a society that constantly tells me I'm not good enough. But I refuse to let the darkness consume me. Instead, I've made it my mission to be a beacon of light for others who may be struggling in silence. In my school community, I've joined forces with like-minded peers to create safe spaces where students can share their stories, seek support, and find solace in knowing they're not alone. From organizing mental health awareness assemblies to leading mindfulness sessions during lunch breaks, every small act of kindness has the power to spark hope in the hearts of those who need it most. Outside the confines of school walls, I've taken to social media to amplify the voices of those whose stories often go unheard. Through raw and vulnerable posts, I've opened up about my own struggles with anxiety and depression, hoping to break down the barriers of shame and stigma that too often surround mental illness. And with each comment, message, and share, I'm reminded of the power of human connection to heal wounds that run deeper than the surface. But advocacy isn't just about raising awareness—it's about taking action. That's why I've dedicated countless hours to volunteering at local mental health organizations, lending a listening ear to those in crisis and offering a shoulder to cry on when words fail to suffice. And though the journey has been wrought with its fair share of tears and setbacks, the moments of genuine connection and shared humanity make every ounce of effort worthwhile. As I stand on the precipice of adulthood, I know that my journey as a mental health advocate is far from over. There will be days when the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear, when self-doubt creeps in and threatens to consume me whole. But in those moments, I'll cling to the lessons I've learned along the way—that vulnerability is a strength, that empathy has the power to heal, and that together we can have more of an impact on our mental health than it does on us.
Peter and Nan Liubenov Student Scholarship
As a high school senior on the cusp of adulthood, my perception of myself as a positive force in society is a blend of youthful idealism and a growing awareness of the world around me. I see myself as someone who can make a difference, not just in the distant future, but also in the present moment. However, this perception is not formed in isolation; it is deeply influenced by the social norms and expectations that shape the world I inhabit. In understanding my role as a positive influence, I draw upon personal experiences and values instilled in me by my family, school, and community. From a young age, I've been taught the importance of kindness, empathy, and standing up for what is right. Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter, participating in environmental clean-up drives, or advocating for social justice issues, I've sought to embody these values in tangible ways. As I look ahead to the future, I envision myself continuing to pursue opportunities to make a positive impact on society. Whether through further education, career choices, or civic engagement, I am eager to contribute my skills and passions to address pressing social challenges and promote positive change. Whether it's advocating for environmental sustainability, promoting mental health awareness, or championing equality and inclusivity, I am determined to leave a meaningful mark on the world around me. Yet, as I navigate my path towards adulthood, I am acutely aware of the influence of social norms on my perception of self and society. The pressure to conform to certain standards of success, appearance, and behavior can sometimes cloud my sense of purpose and authenticity. Moreover, societal expectations regarding gender roles, academic achievement, and career aspirations can shape the opportunities available to me and influence the way my contributions are perceived. However, I refuse to be limited by these norms. Instead, I strive to challenge them by embracing diversity, questioning stereotypes, and advocating for inclusivity. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, I believe we can create a more equitable and compassionate society for future generations. In conclusion, as a high school senior, my perception of myself as a positive force in society is a reflection of my values, aspirations, and the influence of social norms. While I am mindful of the challenges and complexities that lie ahead, I am also optimistic about the potential for positive change. By staying true to myself, embracing diversity, and challenging the status quo, I am confident that I can make a meaningful difference in the world, both now and in the years to come.

My dad wasn't just a father—he was an extraordinary man whose presence lit up the room wherever he went. He had this way about him, a warmth and kindness that drew people to him like moths to a flame. Growing up, he wasn't just my dad; he was my hero, my mentor, and my best friend all rolled into one. Losing my dad to cancer when I was just 13 shattered my world into a million pieces. It felt like a part of me was ripped away, leaving behind an emptiness that I couldn't even begin to fill. Every day was a struggle, a constant battle between trying to hold onto the memories of my dad and grappling with the harsh reality that he was gone. But amidst the overwhelming grief, there was a flicker of light—a silver lining in the darkness that seemed to consume me. It was the animals. Our family pets and the horses at the local stable became my refuge, my sanctuary in a world that had suddenly become so cruel and unfair. They didn't care that I was broken and hurting; they just offered me their unwavering love and companionship, providing a sense of solace and understanding that I couldn't find anywhere else. In those moments with the animals, I found a sense of purpose—a reason to keep going even when everything inside me wanted to give up. Their gentle presence reminded me of the beauty and resilience of life, and I knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to helping them in any way I could. Becoming a large animal veterinary technician isn't just a career choice for me; it's a lifeline—a lifeline that connects me to my dad and the love we shared for all living beings. Every day, I carry his memory with me, a guiding light that propels me forward even when the path ahead seems uncertain and daunting. Sure, it's a lofty goal for someone as young as me, but I refuse to let fear or doubt hold me back. My dad always believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself, and I owe it to him to chase after my dreams with everything I have. With tears in my eyes and a heart full of love, I know that becoming a large animal veterinary technician isn't just what I want—it's what I need. It's my way of honoring my dad, keeping his spirit alive, and ensuring that his legacy of love and compassion lives on forever.

Navigating the turbulent waters of grief after losing my dad to leukemia at thirteen was like being thrust into a tempest with no life jacket. The pain was suffocating, the sadness unbearable, and the emptiness in our home echoed louder than any words could express. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of sorrow, struggling to stay afloat amidst the waves of despair. In the beginning, I didn't know how to cope. The loss was like a gaping wound that refused to heal, leaving me feeling raw and exposed to the harsh realities of life. Every day was a battle against the overwhelming sense of emptiness that threatened to consume me whole. I felt lost, adrift in a world that no longer made sense without my dad by my side. But amidst the darkness, there emerged a glimmer of hope – a flicker of resilience that refused to be extinguished. I realized that I had a choice: I could let grief define me, or I could use it as a catalyst for growth. And so, I chose the latter. I chose to face the pain head-on, to confront the demons that lurked in the shadows of my mind, and to emerge stronger on the other side. It wasn't easy. There were days when I didn't want to get out of bed, when the weight of grief felt like a boulder crushing my chest. But I refused to give up. I sought solace in the memories of my dad, clinging to the moments we shared like lifelines in a stormy sea. I found comfort in the embrace of my family, in the shared laughter and tears that bound us together in our grief. Through it all, I learned the true meaning of resilience – the ability to persevere in the face of adversity, to find strength in the depths of despair, and to emerge from the darkness stronger than before. I discovered that resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about digging deep, confronting the pain, and finding a way to keep moving forward, one step at a time. And as I journeyed through the labyrinth of grief, I discovered something remarkable – the power of human connection to heal even the deepest wounds. In opening up to others about my struggles, I found a community of support unlike anything I had ever known. Friends, family, even strangers, rallied around me with love and compassion, offering words of encouragement, shoulders to cry on, and hands to hold in moments of need. Through shared experiences of loss and resilience, I forged bonds that transcended the superficialities of everyday life. I discovered that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength – a bridge that connects us to one another in our shared humanity. And though the pain of losing my dad will always linger, I am grateful for the lessons it has taught me and the person it has shaped me into. In the end, I am a survivor – not in spite of my struggles, but because of them. My journey through grief has been long and arduous, filled with twists and turns, highs and lows. But through it all, I have emerged stronger, wiser, and more resilient than I ever thought possible. And though the road ahead may be uncertain, I face it with courage and determination, knowing that I am capable of weathering any storm that comes my way.

Yes, I was in the foster care system. My name is Marisol Moss and my journey through the foster care system began at age 3, marked by uncertainty and change. I witnessed my brother endure abuse, leaving a lasting impact on my perspective. The challenges escalated when I lost my father to leukemia, adding layers of grief to my complex journey. However, amidst the storms emerged a beacon of hope – adoption. In the arms of my adoptive family, I found warmth and stability, rewriting the narrative of my life and highlighting the power of love in the face of adversity. Pursuing a degree in animal science is not just about gaining knowledge; it's a commitment to making a positive impact on the community, and for me, it's a personal journey driven by a deep passion for animals. As I embark on this educational endeavor, my vision extends beyond the academic aspect, reaching into the heart of my community where I hope to create lasting change. Obtaining a bachelor's degree in animal science is more than a stepping stone in my academic journey; it's a gateway to a future where my love for animals converges with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the community. From an early age, animals have held a special place in my heart, and this passion has only grown stronger over the years. I envision a future where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of animals and the community at large. One avenue through which I plan to make a positive impact is by promoting responsible pet ownership. As I go in to animal science, I aim to educate the community about the proper care and treatment of pets. This involves educating pet owners about nutrition, exercise, and regular veterinary care, ensuring that our furry friends lead happy and healthy lives. By organizing local workshops or informational sessions, I hope to create an environment where responsible pet ownership becomes a shared value, benefiting both animals and their human companions. Beyond educational initiatives, community engagement will play a pivotal role in my quest to make a positive impact. I envision organizing events that bring together fellow animal enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. Whether it's a community pet fair, where local residents can connect with animal experts, or a charity walk to raise funds for animal shelters, these events serve as catalysts for change, uniting people with a common goal – the welfare of animals. Volunteering at local animal shelters is another avenue through which I plan to translate my academic knowledge into tangible, hands-on assistance. By dedicating my time to these organizations, I can contribute to the well-being of animals that have faced hardship. Cleaning, feeding, and providing companionship to shelter animals are simple yet impactful ways to make a difference. Through my efforts, I aim to not only improve the lives of individual animals but also raise awareness about the challenges faced by animal shelters in the community. In conclusion, the pursuit of a bachelor's degree in animal science is not just an academic endeavor for me; it's a personal commitment to leveraging my passion for animals to create positive change in the community. Through promoting responsible pet ownership, organizing community events, and volunteering at local shelters, I aim to build a more compassionate and informed community where animals receive the care and attention they deserve. I am excited about the prospect of combining my academic knowledge with real-world actions to leave a lasting and positive impact on the lives of both animals and the community I call home.

The enchanting world of Harry Potter, brought to life through the captivating movies, has been an inspiration that transcends the realm of magic and fantasy. As a high school student, the lessons and values embedded in the series have left an indelible mark on my perspective, motivating me to always strive for resilience and courage. One of the central themes in the Harry Potter movies is the triumph of good over evil. Despite facing overwhelming odds and confronting the darkest of adversaries, Harry, Hermione, and Ron exhibit unwavering determination to fight for what is right. This narrative has instilled in me the importance of standing up against injustice and adversity, even when the odds seem insurmountable. The characters' journey through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry serves as a metaphor for the challenges we encounter in our own lives. Each magical creature, spell, and Quidditch match mirrors the complexities and hurdles we face. This journey encourages me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and self-discovery, recognizing that resilience is a key component of personal evolution. Furthermore, the portrayal of mentorship in the movies has left a lasting impact on me. Whether it's Harry seeking guidance from Dumbledore or Hermione learning from Professor McGonagall, the importance of mentorship in overcoming challenges is evident. This has encouraged me to seek guidance from teachers, family members, and mentors in my own life, recognizing the wisdom and support they can provide. The recurring theme of sacrifice in the Harry Potter series also resonates deeply. Characters like Sirius Black, Dumbledore, and even Harry's parents, James and Lily, demonstrate the profound impact of selfless acts. This has instilled in me a sense of empathy and a willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good, understanding that true strength often lies in putting others before oneself. In conclusion, the Harry Potter movies have been a source of inspiration for me as a high school student. Being in and out of the foster care system since I was 3 been a challenging yet transformative journey, shaping me into the resilient individual I am today. One of the biggest lessons that stuck with me during this time, was the importance of strength in the face of adversity. The ever-changing environments and uncertainties of foster care demanded a bit more strength that at the time I didn’t know I had which became the cornerstone of my character. This strength not only helped me endure difficult circumstances but also empowered me to confront life's challenges head-on and to not look back. Patience emerged as an invaluable companion during my time in foster care. Constantly adapting to new homes and situations required a calm and patient approach. Waiting for stability, understanding, and acceptance became a skill that I strived to have over the years. Patience became more than a virtue; it became a survival tool, allowing me to navigate the complexities of the the life I was given and develop a steadfast resilience against the uncertainties that came my way. I sought out opportunities to enhance my skills, broaden my knowledge, and invest in my own development. This commitment to self-improvement not only shaped my academic and professional endeavors but also cultivated a mindset of continuous growth. Perhaps the most profound lesson from my journey through foster care was the importance of fighting for what I believe in. The system's imperfections and disparities compelled me to advocate for change and fairness. Standing up for my rights and the rights of others became an integral part of my identity. The experience taught me that my voice matters, and it ignited a passion for social justice. Through resilience, patience, self-improvement, and advocacy, the foster care system has been a crucible that forged my character, equipping me with the strength and determination to navigate life's challenges with grace and purpose. My life's story is a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of resilience, determination, and an acute understanding of life's capricious nature. The initial placement into the foster care system at the young age of three set the stage for a journey marked by unpredictability and the necessity of adapting to change. What may have seemed inconspicuous at the time revealed itself as a foundation upon which I would construct the story of my life. The profound losses I have experienced, first through the separation from my father when placed in the foster care system, and later the heartbreaking battle with leukemia that claimed his life, became pivotal chapters in my narrative. These instances weren't just moments of sorrow; they evolved into catalysts propelling me towards a singular goal – to become a veterinarian. My dreams, intricately linked to a desire to make your late father proud, have become a driving force, a beacon guiding you through the darkest of times. Embedded within my journey is a robust work ethic, a beautiful legacy inherited from my father. This work ethic is not merely a tribute but a practical manifestation of resilience. It's the force that propels you forward, reminding you that your past does not dictate your future. My commitment to proving that my trauma doesn't define me illustrates a profound understanding that adversity can be transformed into a source of strength. Yet, my story extends beyond personal triumphs. It encompasses a parallel narrative of becoming a pillar of support for my little brother, navigating the complex terrain of shared trauma. My role as a guide and example paints a picture of healing and growth, demonstrating that wounds can be mended and adversities can be surmounted. At its core, my life's trajectory echoes the sentiment that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities for growth. The losses I have weathered have become stepping stones, pushing me to fight relentlessly for your dreams and to effect positive change. This narrative, shaped by both personal and shared struggles, becomes a testament to the amazing power of resilience, defining my character and influencing the manner in which I approach the complexities of the present and the uncertainties of the future. Overall, life is difficult, and sometimes the cards you get dealt "write your story" or "define who you are". The losses I've endured have taught me that it's survival of the fittest. That sometimes all you can do is fight tooth and nail to survive your circumstances and that is what I am going to do.

At the age of three, I was placed into the foster care system. I didn't think much of it at the time, but looking back, it took a big toll on my life. Losing my dad from being taken from my home and placed into the foster care system, and later losing him to leukemia was devastating. It taught me that not everything goes the way you expect it to and that you need to adapt to massive changes in life. He is a giant part of why I am the person I am today. Losing my dad helped me focus on my dream of becoming a veterinarian because I want to make him proud. I need to prove to myself that my trauma doesn't define me, and that I can move on from it. I spent a good chunk of my life dwelling on my past and I have come to realize that doing that gets me nowhere I want to be. Seeing my dad's own work ethic made me push myself in everything I do, to never give up. Losing him has helped me to focus on life in the present and to never look past an opportunity to improve. Along with losing my dad, I've also, in a lot of ways, lost my little brother. Being ripped away from him and watching him struggle with his own traumas, it has taught me that I can be an example to him and help him heal from his trials as well as my own. Being an example helps me focus on what matters most in my life because it forces me to see the brighter side of situations, it forces me out of every comfort zone and allows me to really fight to make my life better than what was handed to me. Life is hard, and sometimes the cards you get dealt "write your story" or "define who you are". The losses I've endured have taught me that it's survival of the fittest. That sometimes all you can do is fight tooth and nail to survive your circumstances. Losing my dad and my brother time and time again has encouraged me to make the changes I wish to see in my own life, to fight to make my dreams a reality because you never know when life is going to get flipped upside down. Thanks to them, I can say that my trauma, has become my inspiration.
