Bio

I am a first-generation Mexican-American and the first person in my family to attend college. Pursuing higher education has been an important part of my journey, not only because I am building a future for myself, but because I hope to inspire others in my family to believe that they can pursue their own dreams as well. I am currently pursuing a career in Radiologic Technology, where I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through healthcare. My journey has not always been easy. I have faced significant challenges with my mental health, including bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and PTSD. Despite these challenges, I continue to show up for myself, my education, and my future every day. These experiences have taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of never giving up on yourself. Outside of school, I love traveling and seeking out new experiences. I enjoy adventure activities such as ziplining and hang gliding, and I hope to go skydiving someday. I believe life is meant to be experienced fully, and I try to carry that spirit of adventure and courage into everything I do. As I continue my education, my goal is to create a life that I can be proud of, serve others through my career, and show that where you come from does not have to determine where you are going.

Bick First Generation Scholarship
Growing up, I learned to navigate two different worlds. At home, I spoke Spanish, ate the food my family knew, and lived within my parents’ traditions. Outside, everything seemed different. I did not speak English; I was unfamiliar with American culture, and even the food at school felt foreign. I remember tasting a grilled cheese sandwich at school when I was seven. The warm bread, melted cheese, and tomato soup felt new. It may seem small, but it represents growing up between two worlds. I discovered things that seemed ordinary to everyone else but were completely new to me. I was learning English and a culture different from mine. These discoveries taught me to enter unfamiliar places, find my footing, and create a place for myself. Yet food was not always a source of discovery or joy; it was also a reminder of the challenges my family faced. I grew up experiencing poverty and food insecurity. I remember going with my mother to a church for food and clothing. As a child, I did not understand our circumstances, but I knew our family depended on others’ generosity. These experiences shaped my understanding of hardship, gratitude, and compassion. Being first-generation means stepping into the unknown and creating a world that did not exist before you. It means standing before a blank canvas and creating your own map, one that not only helps you find your way but also guides others toward success. My parents did not graduate from high school or attend college, so I had to navigate academics on my own. Without guidance, I did not feel confident that college was meant for me. Nearly a decade after high school, I returned to college and realized I was capable of more than I once believed. Earning my associate degree gave me the confidence to continue my education. Now, I am paving a road my nieces and nephews can follow. Today, I am pursuing a degree in Radiologic Technology with the goal of becoming a radiologic technologist and eventually specializing in MRI. I want to combine science and technology with my dedication to helping others. Knowing what it feels like to need support has strengthened my desire to offer it. I want my patients to feel seen, respected, and cared for in vulnerable moments. I want a life defined by possibility rather than limitation. I love traveling and adventure, and I hope to skydive someday. To me, these experiences represent freedom: the ability to explore, make my own choices, and discover what life can offer. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of my education and allow me to focus on completing my degree. I began my journey learning a language and navigating a world I did not yet understand. Today, I am creating the world I once imagined, building a career that reflects my purpose, and paving a road my nieces and nephews can follow. I want to be the first, but I do not want to be the last.
