I recently graduated with a degree in biology from the University of La Verne, where I discovered my passion for connecting science with real-world impact. Whether I was hiking through creeks collecting macroinvertebrates, observing wildlife in Montana, or researching endangered gibbons, I’ve always been driven by curiosity and a desire to protect both people and the planet. Now, I’m heading to Keck Graduate Institute to pursue a Master of Business and Science in Biotechnology in Fall 2025. My goal is to work at the intersection of science, business, and public health helping bring safe, effective innovations to the world through regulatory affairs or biotech management. I'm committed to using what I learn to uplift communities and make science more accessible, responsible, and impactful.

    RELEVANCE Scholarship
    Growing up in a single-parent household shaped the foundation of who I am. My parent worked tirelessly to provide stability and hope while balancing emotional and financial responsibilities alone. Witnessing their resilience in the face of adversity taught me the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and service to others. Those early lessons shaped my desire to pursue a career in healthcare one where I could be of service to those facing vulnerability and systemic challenges like my family once did. My journey through the healthcare field began as a biology undergraduate. I immersed myself in anatomy, physiology, and public health courses, but it was my personal experience navigating healthcare as a dependent of a single parent that truly motivated me. I witnessed firsthand the difficulty of accessing timely, affordable care and the emotional toll of feeling like just another number in the system. I realized the system often forgets the people who need it most. That realization became a calling not just to enter healthcare, but to improve it. Now, as I prepare to enter the Master of Business and Science (MBS) program at Keck Graduate Institute, my focus is expanding. I’m no longer just interested in biology; I’m driven to reform healthcare systems, policy, and accessibility. The MBS program allows me to blend science with leadership, gaining tools to drive innovations that prioritize human dignity and health equity. I want to advocate for underserved communities, design systems that remove barriers, and create healthcare environments that listen as much as they treat. I’ve worked in clinical settings, volunteered at community health events, and served as president of my university’s Clinical Science Club. These roles showed me that impact doesn’t always come from having the most resources, but from using what you have to connect, uplift, and empower others. My background once a source of self-doubt has become my greatest strength. It taught me how to relate to patients with empathy, how to lead with patience, and how to stay grounded in purpose even during chaos. Pursuing a graduate education in healthcare is a serious commitment financially, emotionally, and mentally. But what I’ve learned from growing up in a single-parent home is how to stay focused and optimistic even in the face of uncertainty. That lesson will carry me through graduate school and into a future career that centers healing, equity, and resilience. This scholarship would not only help relieve some of the financial strain on my family it would represent recognition of how far I’ve come and encouragement to keep moving forward. More importantly, it would help me continue walking a path shaped by my challenges, now used to build solutions that serve others. My goal is to turn adversity into advocacy, and service into systems change.

    Sustainability is no longer a buzzword, it’s a requirement for survival. In every field, particularly in science and business, sustainability should be a core priority. As a biology graduate now pursuing a Master of Business and Science (MBS) in Biotechnology at Keck Graduate Institute, I see sustainability as both a scientific imperative and a business strategy. My goal is to build a career that not only promotes innovation in biotechnology but also ensures that such innovation occurs responsibly, ethically, and with minimal environmental impact. My interest in sustainability began during my undergraduate fieldwork in ecological conservation. I participated in research focused on stream health by analyzing macroinvertebrate diversity and pollution tolerance indices in Southern California. Later, I studied wildlife activity and seasonal behavior in Montana using remote camera traps. These experiences opened my eyes to how human activity even in indirect forms can destabilize fragile ecosystems. I began to question how scientific advancements, while often groundbreaking, could contribute to these problems if sustainability isn’t embedded into every phase of development. This ecological awareness followed me into the lab. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked in clinical lab support roles, where I helped process tests and specimens as part of the healthcare system's response. I witnessed the immense volume of medical waste generated daily, single-use plastics, reagents, packaging and wondered if solutions existed that could preserve patient safety while reducing environmental impact. That curiosity grew into a deeper interest in regulatory affairs and biotech sustainability. I realized that addressing environmental concerns shouldn’t be separate from science and healthcare, it should be integrated into every protocol, product, and policy. In the future, I envision myself working at the intersection of regulatory science and sustainability within the biotech or pharmaceutical industries. My goal is to support the development and approval of life-saving innovations while ensuring they meet rigorous environmental standards. That includes promoting greener manufacturing methods, reducing chemical waste, and encouraging companies to adopt eco-conscious supply chains. I want to be involved in shaping product life cycles that consider not only human outcomes, but planetary ones. Through my MBS program, I’m building a foundation in both technical and business disciplines, preparing me to evaluate biotech innovations not only for efficacy and safety, but also for sustainability. I want to help create systems where environmental impact is measured alongside clinical benefit. I also aim to push for policies that incentivize green practices in labs, factories, and offices, not just as compliance, but as a competitive advantage. With regulatory guidance and forward-thinking leadership, I believe that even large-scale biotech operations can become more sustainable. Beyond corporate strategy, I hope to be a voice for change within the professional community, mentoring peers and future scientists to consider sustainability early in their designs and decisions. Whether through lifecycle assessments, environmental certifications, or community engagement, I want to help shift our culture from reactionary fixes to proactive stewardship. Receiving the Future Green Leaders Scholarship would not only support my education, it would strengthen my commitment to lead responsibly. I may not be developing renewable energy technologies or reforesting ecosystems, but I am working toward a career where I can reduce the environmental cost of healthcare and biotechnology. In an age where every profession must evolve to meet climate challenges, I believe my work in regulatory and bioscience can make a meaningful contribution. The future of sustainability depends not only on bold ideas but also on bold implementation. I’m ready to be part of both.
