Glenda I. Tanner Memorial Scholarship
One of the most significant challenges I have faced occurred during my time as a dual-enrolled student at sixteen. While I was excited about having the opportunity to begin college early, I really underestimated the level of responsibility and independence that came with joining college. Around the same time, I was still carrying the emotional impact of an earlier experience I had gone through that involved cyberbullying, which had affected my confidence and sense of belonging for quite a while during most of my high school years. Together, both of these challenges created a difficult period in my life that really tested my ability to grow and take initiative in my life.
When I first enrolled into my college courses, I had believed that I could handle everything on my own. However, balancing college classes, a part-time job, and personal responsibilities quickly became overwhelming for me. Yet since all of my classes were online, I spent most of my time at home and increased the level of hardships on my mental health. What first felt like freedom slowly turned into isolation. I often procrastinated on assignments and struggled to stay motivated, and the only time I regularly left the house was to go to work.
The lingering effects of my past experiences with cyberbullying also made it difficult for me to reach out to others. In the past, being targeted online had made me more hesitant to open up or trust people easily. As a result, when I began struggling academically and emotionally, I kept most of those challenges to myself, like I always did. My motivation and self-determination were at one of their lowest points that I have ever experienced.
Eventually, I realized that continuing to face everything alone was only making the situation more difficult for me. I began making an effort to reach out, connect with others, and build a stronger support system, while also accepting that it’s okay to share problems with other people. Through these connections, I started to regain my confidence and motivation, and I learned that asking for help is a very important step toward growth and change.
Today, I always try to approach obstacles with a stronger mindset and a deeper understanding that growth often comes from the moments that we take initiative and connect with others. Overall, I hope to continue becoming the kind of leader for others that makes a difference by turning empathy into action because I know what it feels like to feel lost in an overwhelming world.
