People often describe me as the light in a dark room the one who brings sunshine wherever I go. That light comes from resilience. Growing up, my mom called me her “sunshine,” a name that reminded me to keep shining even through hardship. I carried emotional weight at a young age, facing challenges with my father that tested my strength. But instead of letting pain turn into anger, I chose to make it part of my story.
I’ve learned that the darkest moments can teach the brightest lessons. They taught me what I will never tolerate, what I want for my future, and how important it is to break unhealthy cycles. I turned struggles into motivation, and I became my own sunshine. No matter what obstacles I face, I continue to bring positivity and strength not only for myself, but for the people around me.
My journey is my pride. It has made me stronger, wiser, and determined to create a better future. I am not a victim of my circumstances I am proof that light can come from darkness.

Women in Healthcare Scholarship
Ever since I was younger, I have always known that I wanted a career where I could help people during difficult moments in their lives. Over time, that passion led me toward healthcare. My interest became even stronger during my junior year Anatomy and Physiology class, where I became fascinated by the human body and the way medical professionals use science and technology to improve and save lives. Learning about radiology especially stood out to me because I realized how important medical imaging is in diagnosing and treating patients. That experience confirmed for me that healthcare is the path I want to dedicate my future to.
I plan to pursue a career as a Radiologic Technologist and eventually specialize as a Cardiac Radiologic Technologist. What draws me most to this field is the combination of patient care, technology, and compassion. While radiology focuses on diagnosing and treating patients physically, I believe emotional support is equally important. Patients are often scared, stressed, or uncertain when receiving medical care, and I want to be someone who helps make them feel safe, comfortable, and cared for during those moments.
My personal experiences have also shaped my desire to pursue healthcare. Growing up, I experienced emotional hardships that taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of kindness. There were moments in my life when I felt unheard or powerless, but those struggles inspired me to become someone who can provide comfort and support to others. They taught me that even small acts of compassion can have a lasting impact on a person’s life. Because of this, I want patients to know they are more than just a diagnosis or appointment. I want them to feel respected, understood, and valued.
As a Hispanic woman entering the healthcare field, I also hope to make a difference by helping create a more inclusive and compassionate environment for patients from all backgrounds. Representation matters, especially in healthcare, because patients often feel more comfortable when they can connect with professionals who understand their experiences, culture, or struggles. I want to show other young women, especially Hispanic students, that they are capable of succeeding in careers that once may have felt out of reach.
In addition to my passion for healthcare, my experiences in HOSA strengthened my confidence and commitment to this field. I competed in Pharmacology and advanced to the Illinois State competition, where I placed in the Top 10 in the state. Preparing for that competition required discipline, dedication, and perseverance, and it made me realize how much I genuinely enjoy learning about healthcare and medicine.
Receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of the financial stress that comes with pursuing higher education and allow me to stay focused on my goals. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who is passionate about making a positive impact in healthcare. I hope to build a career where I can not only help patients physically, but also bring comfort, compassion, and encouragement to people during vulnerable moments in their lives.

1.) I would describe myself as resilient, hardworking, and compassionate. I am a second-generation Hispanic student who has grown up understanding both the beauty and the struggles that can come with being part of an immigrant family in today’s world. My background has shaped the way I see education, family, and success. I was raised to value sacrifice, perseverance, and hard work because I watched my mom carry the responsibilities of both parents while working multiple jobs to support our family and help her children pursue higher education. Seeing her strength motivated me to push myself academically and personally, even during difficult moments in my life.
Being Hispanic has also taught me the importance of community and resilience. Growing up, there were times when I felt pressure to prove myself or overcome stereotypes, especially in environments where opportunities did not always feel equal. However, those experiences taught me to use challenges as motivation rather than letting them hold me back. My experiences have shaped my passion for helping others, which is one reason I plan to pursue a career in healthcare as a Radiologic Technologist.
2.) Growing up in a multicultural environment and interacting with people from many different backgrounds has taught me the importance of understanding perspectives outside of my own. As a Hispanic student, I learned how valuable diversity is and how much people can grow when they are open to learning from one another. I have also learned how difficult it can sometimes feel balancing family traditions and cultural expectations while trying to build your own future.
Being exposed to different educational and cultural environments helped me become more adaptable and open-minded. I learned how to communicate with people from different backgrounds, respect differences, and appreciate experiences that are different from my own. These experiences have helped me grow into someone who values empathy, inclusivity, and connection with others.
3.) There were times in my life when personal struggles and family hardships made me question myself, but education became something that gave me hope and purpose. I learned that challenges do not define who you are; instead, they can shape you into a stronger and more determined person.
One of the most meaningful lessons I have learned is the importance of resilience. As someone who grew up facing emotional and financial struggles, I realized that success is not only measured by achievements, but also by the ability to continue moving forward despite obstacles. My experiences taught me empathy and compassion because I understand what it feels like to struggle silently. They also taught me the importance of using my voice to encourage and support others who may feel unheard.
4.) My academic interests and career goals are strongly connected to the impact I hope to make in the lives of others. I plan to become a Radiologic Technologist. I want to work in healthcare because I care about helping people during vulnerable moments in their lives. Beyond providing medical care, I hope to make patients feel safe, respected, and supported emotionally as well.
Receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of the financial stress that comes with pursuing higher education and allow me to stay focused on my academic and career goals. More importantly, it would represent an investment in my future and in the values my family worked so hard to instill in me. I hope to continue building a successful future not only for myself, but also for my family and community, while inspiring other Hispanic students to believe that their struggles do not limit what they can achieve.

The person who has supported me the most throughout my educational journey is my mom. As a single mother raising three children, she has sacrificed more than I could ever fully explain. She works three jobs to support our family and help all of us pursue higher education. Watching her carry the responsibilities of both parents has shaped the person I am today and has motivated me to work harder for my future. No matter how exhausted she is, she continues to show up for us every single day with strength, love, and determination.
Growing up in a single-parent household was not always easy. There were many moments where I saw my mom struggle under the pressure of providing for our family while also trying to emotionally support us. Despite everything she carried, she never allowed us to give up on our dreams. She constantly reminded us that education is something nobody can take away from us, and she made sure we understood the importance of working hard and building a better future. Even during difficult times, she always found ways to encourage us and make us feel supported.
My mom has been both a mother and a father figure in my life. She carried responsibilities that should have been shared by two people, yet she handled them with incredible resilience. Watching her work long hours while still putting her children first taught me the true meaning of sacrifice, perseverance, and unconditional love. Her strength inspired me to keep pushing forward even when life became difficult. Whenever I doubted myself, I would think about everything she had overcome for our family, and it reminded me that I could not give up.
I honor my mom through my determination to succeed and by striving to make her sacrifices worth it. Every goal I accomplish is not only for myself, but also for her because I know how hard she worked to give me opportunities she may not have had herself. My motivation to pursue a career in healthcare as a Radiologic Technologist comes from wanting to create a stable and successful future while also making a positive impact on others. I want my mom to one day feel proud knowing that all of her sacrifices helped her children build meaningful lives.
Her support has shaped me into someone who values resilience, compassion, and hard work. Because of her example, I learned how important it is to continue moving forward even when life feels overwhelming. I also learned the importance of kindness and caring for others because I witnessed her constantly put her children’s needs before her own.
I work toward my goals, I want to build on her support by becoming successful enough to give back to her and help ease the burdens she has carried for so many years. More than anything, I want to provide her with the peace and stability she deserves after sacrificing so much for our family. Her support has been instrumental in my life because it gave me hope, motivation, and the belief that despite hardships, I can still create a successful future for myself and make her proud.

Mental health and suicide prevention are important topics among my generation because so many young people silently struggle with emotional pain, trauma, anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness while feeling like they have nobody to turn to. Many people my age are taught to hide their emotions or act like everything is fine even when they are struggling internally. Because of this, mental health conversations are necessary now more than ever. They remind people that they are not alone and that healing is possible.
People often describe me as the light in a dark room, and that light comes from the hardships I have had to overcome. Growing up, my mom always called me her “sunshine,” a nickname that stayed with me even during the darkest moments of my life. It reminded me that even when everything around me felt heavy, I could still choose to shine. My childhood was not easy. I remember countless nights crying myself to sleep, whispering prayers asking for my father to change, and pretending to be asleep just to avoid another conflict. I carried emotional pain that very few people my age understood, and silence became my way of surviving. Speaking up often made things worse, so I learned to stay quiet even when I was hurting the most.
For a long time, I felt powerless and carried guilt that was never mine to hold. I was a scared little girl who often wished she had a different father, someone who would bring comfort instead of fear. But despite everything I experienced, I made a promise to myself: I would not allow my pain to turn into hatred, nor would I let it define who I would become. Instead, I chose to transform my experiences into motivation. They taught me what I will never accept in my life and what I will never allow in my future family.
Over time, I learned that strength is not about pretending you are never afraid. Real strength is continuing to move forward even when your voice shakes. I am no longer the silent girl I once was. I have worked hard to find my voice, and now I want to use it to help others feel seen and understood. My positivity is not something that simply came naturally to me; it is something I earned through surviving difficult experiences and choosing not to let them destroy me.
These hardships deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and future goals. They taught me empathy, patience, and compassion because I know what it feels like to struggle silently. I try to be someone others can trust and feel safe around because I understand how powerful kindness and support can be. My experiences also shaped my career aspirations. I plan to become a Radiologic Technologist and eventually specialize as a Cardiac Radiologic Technologist. I want to work in healthcare because I want to bring comfort to people during moments when they may feel afraid or vulnerable.
Most importantly, my journey taught me that scars are not signs of weakness; they are proof that you survived. I want to use my story to remind others that their circumstances do not define them. Even in the darkest times, it is possible to create your own light and become stronger because of what you have overcome.

My journey toward the medical field began with the challenges I faced growing up. Having a father who struggled with addiction taught me lessons that no classroom could. There were times I longed for him to show up for me, like at a school event where dads came to read with their children. Instead, I sat alone with a teacher I didn’t know while my classmates laughed with their fathers. Moments like this were painful, but they pushed me to realize that I could not control anyone else—only myself. Over the years, I turned that pain into motivation, promising myself that I would build a better future and use my story to help others who feel unseen or unsupported.
This mindset is what inspires me to pursue a career in the medical field. Medicine has always drawn me because it is about more than science—it is about serving people in their most vulnerable moments. I want to dedicate my life to helping others the way I once wished someone could help me. My goal is to become a radiology technician. At first glance, this career may seem focused on machines and images, but to me, it is a role that combines both technical skill and human compassion. Behind every scan is a patient who may be scared or anxious, and I want to be the person who reassures them, explains the process clearly, and treats them with kindness and dignity.
What excites me most about this career is the opportunity to make a direct and indirect difference. By producing accurate images, I will help doctors diagnose and treat illnesses, potentially saving lives. But just as importantly, I will be there face-to-face with patients, providing comfort during a time that can feel overwhelming. My personal experiences have taught me the importance of feeling supported when life is difficult, and I plan to bring that same support into every interaction with my patients.
I am also committed to giving back to my community. I know that not everyone has equal access to healthcare or feels comfortable in medical settings. As a healthcare professional, I want to help bridge that gap by creating positive experiences for people who may feel overlooked. My dream is to be remembered not only for my technical ability but also for the way I made patients feel cared for and respected.
The adversity I faced growing up gave me resilience, strength, and perspective. Instead of letting my circumstances define me, I chose to rise above them and dedicate myself to a path where I can bring light to others. Pursuing a career in radiology is my way of turning hardship into purpose. I want to help people feel safe, supported, and hopeful in moments when they need it most, and that is the difference I plan to make in my career.

I am someone who has always been described as a light in a dark room, and I carry that same energy into every area of my life. Growing up, I faced challenges that taught me resilience, strength, and the importance of compassion, and those qualities have shaped the path I want to pursue. I plan to enter the medical field as a radiology technician because I want to dedicate my career to helping others during times when they may feel scared, vulnerable, or uncertain. I know from my own experiences that having someone treat you with kindness and respect during difficult moments can make all the difference, and I want to be that person for patients who come into a hospital or clinic unsure of what their future holds. To master my trade, I will commit myself fully to my education and hands on training, knowing that learning is not just about technical skill but also about building empathy and professionalism. I believe that excellence comes from a balance of hard work, determination, and the willingness to continue learning every day, even beyond formal schooling. I plan to seek out internships, certifications, and opportunities that will challenge me and strengthen my knowledge so that I can provide the best possible care to patients. Giving back to my community has always been important to me, and I see my future career as a way to do exactly that. As a radiology technician, I will be able to serve people from all walks of life, especially those who may not always have access to the best medical resources. My goal is not only to perform my job with skill but also to bring a sense of comfort and positivity to those I serve. In the long term, I also hope to mentor young people in my community who may be interested in the healthcare field, especially those who, like me, grew up facing adversity. By sharing my story and helping guide them toward opportunities, I want to show them that no matter where you come from, you can create a meaningful future for yourself. Pursuing radiology is more than just a career choice for me, it is a way to combine my resilience, my drive to help others, and my commitment to giving back. My vision is to not only build a successful career but also to use it as a tool to uplift others, spread positivity, and continue being the light that I promised myself I would always be.
