Hello! I’m Mariah, and resilience is the thread running through my education, creativity, and community goals. I’ve overcome difficult times in my life that taught me persistence, empathy, and the power of showing up even when life feels heavy. Art and crafts are more than hobbies, I use making things as a way to heal, communicate, and help others feel seen. I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work and plan to serve individuals and families facing barriers to mental health care, poverty, and social isolation. My long-term goal is to combine evidence-based social work practice with creative expression programs that build confidence and connection. I bring a goofy spirit, a growth mindset, and the motto: “Normal is boring—it’s a Mariah Symptom.” Financial support from scholarshipsb would ease tuition costs and let me spend more time learning, serving, and advocating for those who need it. It would also relieve my. financial burden at home and help support my seven year old son.

Turning Pain Into Purpose: My Dream to Serve as a Social Worker
My biggest dream in life is to become a licensed social worker and open a trauma-based wellness center that supports survivors of domestic violence and individuals facing mental health challenges. I envision a welcoming space where healing is not only possible but also encouraged through a combination of traditional counseling and creative outlets, such as art therapy, journaling, and group support. I want to create a safe haven for people who feel invisible, unheard, or stuck in survival mode because I know exactly how that feels.
This dream isn't just a dream; it’s personal. I’m a 32-year-old single mom to a vibrant, curious, and energetic 7-year-old boy. I am also a survivor of domestic violence, along with other difficult life experiences. There were countless times when I needed someone, anyone, to listen without judgment, to remind me that I mattered, and to offer me emotional support, but often that help was hard to find. I wasn’t looking for someone to fix everything; I just needed to feel seen and heard.
My turning point came when my son was just three years old. I made the painful decision to leave the abusive relationship I was in. At the time, he didn’t understand what had happened. He became angry and confused, and I was left feeling broken. I reached out to Ohio Guidestone, a local counseling center, and they sent over a woman for my son who would unknowingly change my life. She was originally my son's counselor, but after a couple of years and the death of my grandmother, mental health struggles, and many breakdowns, she eventually became my counselor. Her compassion, consistency, and patience showed me what true support could look like. She became the person I had always wished for, and because of her, I began to believe in healing again.
That experience helped pave the way for my passion for social work. I realized I wanted to be that person for someone else. I wanted to be a voice, a safe place, a guide for anyone navigating trauma, grief, or mental illness. My life experiences, while painful, have given me a level of empathy that can’t be taught. I’ve lived through the storm and found purpose in the process.
To make this dream happen, I’m currently pursuing my Bachelor's in Social Work at Capella University. This program is giving me the knowledge and tools I need to advocate for change. After graduation, I plan to pursue my Master of Social Work, obtain licensure, and begin working with families, survivors, and underserved communities. Every step of this journey is fueled by my belief that healing should be accessible, compassionate, and creative.
This journey isn’t easy, especially as a full-time student, a working mom, and someone healing in real time. But I’m determined to succeed not just for myself, but for my son. I want him to grow up knowing that no matter what life throws your way, you can choose to rise with integrity, compassion, and strength. I want him to see that even after pain, something beautiful and meaningful can grow.
With additional financial support, I will be one step closer to making this vision a reality. This scholarship will allow me to continue focusing on my education without being weighed down by financial stress. It will help me move forward toward a future where I can give back to others what was once given to me: hope.
