My grandmother, Phyllis, inspired me to pursue an advanced degree. I begin my nursing program in August, 2022, to achieve my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. My dream has always been to become a nurse, just like my grandmother. She was the most amazing person, and most caring/ compassionate nurse. I believe I got my compassion and caring demeanor from her. She unexpectedly passed away in 2012, from a heart attack. This really took a toll on me, and I think about her everyday. Even though life has been hard without her, it has pushed me even harder to live on her legacy. I have been working in health care as a certified nurse assistant for the last 5 years. I absolutely love working alongside co-workers and my patients. Being able to care for someone who is injured or sick, and being their main encouragement and support at that time, is such a fulfilling feeling. I started out in a skilled nursing facility, and this is where my deviation for elderly came from. From learning their daily routine, being there for them when their family couldn't be, to holding their hand while they took their last breath. I will always love working with this group of people. After a few years of doing that, I wanted to learn more and expand my knowledge. So I got a job on a Trauma/ Surgical Unit at a Trauma II hospital. I had no idea how much I enjoyed the trauma side of patient care. Not only was I able to work with trauma patients, I also was able to work with surgical and cancer patients of all sorts. I learned so much during my time on this unit, and I know it has helped me prepare for nursing school. I now work in addiction medicine, and let me tell you, I didn’t know how much I can learn about addiction! This side of medicine has been really close to home. As my brothers have both suffered from substance abuse. Thankfully they are doing much better now, but I can definitely relate to my patients. It is so hard to have the support you need when you are an addict because so many people you love, lose their trust. I am beyond thankful for all of the learning opportunities I have had in the last 5 years and I am looking forward to many more years of growth, knowledge, leadership, and success. With the endless opportunities in nursing, I have so many goals for my nursing career! My goal is to become a trauma nurse, I would love working with the team on the flight for life helicopter. I think it would be so fulfilling to be a part of the team who responds to trauma accidents and saves lives. I absolutely love the fast-paced environment, and I love adapting to changes quickly. I also want experience working as a labor and delivery nurse because it would be so amazing being able to experience the beginning of life versus the end. I am ready to take on any challenges that come my way, I will never give up on my dream to be a nurse.
